I've been a patient of Dr. Hsu for over 10 years, and he is great. Unfortunately, the front desk / my-appointments have been beyond unreliable, making it impossible to maintain scheduled dental care. This is the third time my appointment, booked over six mo ago, gets moved to a wait-list - with no notice, and I discovered on the week of my appt by getting a voice msg at 10am: "you are on wait-list, we have an opening today at 4pm, would you like to come?". My kids and I have been seeing Dr Hsui for years and all of a sudden front desk refuse to schedule an appointment for us. They put our names on the waitlist and we have been waiting for weeks. The dentists at HUI Dental are very capable, professional, and treat their patients with the utmost courtesy and respect. I give them props for that. However, during a recent appointment to get a hard night guard for the upper teeth, I was quoted $522 over the phone when I made the appointment. During the actual appointment, I was told it costs $595 instead. I love how they really explain, educate, and make sure you're comfortable throughout the experience by checking in on you while they're all up in your grill. I first picked Hui Dental because it was super close to my office. Super Convenient for me to go to appointments. I have been to Hui Dental a couple of times, a couple cleaning and got some filling. I had Dr. Choy. She was amazing. She's really thorough in the process. I remember recently, I had cleaning back in March and had another appointment for filling after in April. Back in March, I mentioned that I was moving, and she remembered (probably wrote it down in my profile). She asked me about how my new place was. I was so surprised that she remembered. I was very pleased. During the cleaning process and filling, she was very patient and was explaining what she was doing. She kept checking with me if I were doing okay. I've been to different dental offices, had no special feeling about them. However, with Dr. Choy, she was very patient and nice. She made me felt like she actually is someone I can talk to rather than just a doctor. Unfortunately, shes moving to a different office, no longer at this San Mateo location. Great people. It can take a little bit of a wait for an appointment, but that's pretty much the norm these days, anyway. The office has great staff who are sensitive to their patients needs, and do their best to accommodate. For existing patients, they also go above and beyond for emergencies. The night before I was to leave the country on vacation, I broke a tooth. I called the after hours number and explained the situation. Well, if you go to Dr. Hsu, it's the most pleasant experience you could hope for from a dentist appointment. My background: Inherited bad teeth and receding gums (thanks, parents). Routine dentist appointments (cleanings, check-ups) are hell. I have to be numbed (novocaine, not just topical) but, lucky me, I am practically immune to novocaine! Dr. Choy at Hui Dental is great! I'm always impressed with her knowledge and way of explaining things. She is able to breakdown the process and make me feel comfortable with each step. Though she's kind, Dr. Choy isn't afraid to make strong recommendations either (ok, I'll floss!). The office is clean, has lots of natural lighting, and the staff is friendly. TL;DR Do not go here if you have anxiety about going to the dentist. Don't go here if you have Ehler Danlos Syndrome. I had a panic attack at this dentist office in front of Dr Hsu. His reaction was to shove something in my mouth while I was having trouble breathing and I was panicking. He completely ignored that I was having distress. Dr Hsu said that this was not a panic attack, I was simply being overly emotional. I'm very disappointing that a health care professional in 2015 still holds on to these archaic notions about mental health. Panic attacks are very real, and very awful. Dr Hsu would know that Ehler Danlos patients are prone to panic attacks because of autonomic dysfunction, if he would have simply read about Ehler Danlos like he assured me he would. At a previous appt., Dr Hsu told me that he had another patient with Ehler Danlos and he said he would read about it. Ehler Danlos is a systematic disease that effects all systems including the mouth, gums, teeth, nerves and jaw. I would bet that Dr. Hsu never read anything about Ehler Danlos Sydrome. May is Ehler Danlos awareness month and I hope that Dr. Hsu will read about Ehler Danlos especially since the disease effects the mouth and because he says he has a patient under his care with Ehler Danlos. I also hope Dr. Hsu realizes that anxiety is a real health issue that many people face. Fear of the dentist is not that uncommon. I don't have anxiety because I'm emotionally unstable or 'overly emotional'. I don't cry when I see babies and I'm not the sentimental type. My body just works differently and my nervous system is always hyper aware and on high alert for danger. A hype sensitive nervous system would probably be useful if I was trying to survive in the wild. Unfortunately, there are not that many bears to chase me in San Mateo, and my overly sensitive nervous system doesn't get to make me run from bears; I just run from the dentist especially Hui Dental. Can I give this a 6? I've lived and/or worked in the mid Peninsula for 30 years and have tried a number of different dentists for myself and my family. I've been going to Hui for several years now and can honestly declare they are the absolute best for a number of reasons: 1) Skill. You always have to place great technical talent at the top of your list when choosing a dentist. I have found their abilities to be super-talented. 2) Staff-patient interaction. They are very pleasant, kind and gentle in all their client interactions. I've been serviced by several different dentists and have had a number of different procedures. They also tell you exactly what they are going to do before they do it and they go into what you might feel or experience during the procedure. 3) Scheduling flexibility. I'm pretty busy at work like I'm sure many people are. Having weekend and other hours makes things very easy to set-up and schedule. Also, frequently, when they have a cancellation, they will call or text to make me aware of an earlier available appointment. Usually people don't look forward to seeing the dentist. People associate it with seeing your tax person! But, Hui makes dentistry as painless and positive as possible. read more

I have many gum line cavities due to my dry mouth condition. Dr. Han was able to fill those cavities very professionally and with care. They are perfectly fine for a cleaning however don't trust them with anything else. It's never the same dentist that sees you. My husband had his wisdom teeth taken out here and spent 2 weeks in a MASSIVE amount of pain, because the dentists at this dental group didn't believe that he had an infection and hadn't given him antibiotics, despite the fact that he had just had an operation to have all four wisdom teeth taken out. We went into the office, 4-5 times one week, each time demanding to see a dentist and each time they sent us home with stronger pain meds, when what my husband needed and was telling them that he needed was anti-inflamatories and antibiotics. They ignored us, and kept saying "well I teach dentist school and this is what I tell my students" ... It took them 2 weeks to realize that he did have a MASSIVE infection, at that point, and then they prescribed him anti-inflamatories and antibiotics. Again, if you want a regular teeth cleaning then this place is fine, for anything more serious, I would not recommend it. read more

I have a similar story to others here. I mean, going to the dentist sucks, right? I get nervous and shaky. The fact is we gotta go, so we can at least find a good dentist. Enter Dr. Kwan. He explains everything, is kind and thorough. He explains things that need to be done without sounding condescending. Here is the story that may not be so similar to others. I called for a kind of emergency appointment yesterday and was in the office half an hour later (as a new patient). Dr. Kwan was great. I'll definitely go back. Interesting side note: I had a cavity filled 15 years ago by a dentist that was a family friend. I've gone to several dentists since then, having moved around a lot, and *not one* other dentist has noticed the filling - they've always said I've never had a cavity. Great local San Mateo dentist that is honest and open convenient hours. I've got a gnarly molar in the back which is chipped slightly but has no other problems. I can usually tell a bad dentist by the dollar signs that light up when they probe the chip, and then proceed to tell me that my lower jaw will rot off in six months if this is left untreated. Unlike car salesman dentists, Dr. Kwan has always reviewed my options along with a cost/benefit analysis, and his opinion of whether you actually need the work done. Dr. Leslie Hsu is amazing. The best dentist I ever had in my life (I've had 4 dentists throughout my life). When I first moved to the Bay Area, I was lucky enough to find Dr. Hsu at Hui Dental. He was amazing. Then, one day, I received a letter from my insurance company suggesting that I switch dentists because Hui Dental was not in my network; my insurance still covered 100% for general cleaning and x-rays, but the insurance company said that it would save them money and help keep our costs down if I found a dentist in network. My younger, naive self diligently followed the insurance company's directives and found myself a different dentist that was in network. Boy was that a mistake (damn insurance companies and their trickery!). I did a bonding job with another dentist elsewhere, and it broke off within a month. But I still stuck with the other dentist for a couple years. The worst thing about the other dentist was that every time I would get general cleaning from the hygienist, it would hurt like hell. I know that general cleaning is painful for a lot of people, but in all my life, I've never had it hurt so much like it did with my other dentist's hygienist. In fact, the pain from general cleaning got so bad with the other dentist, that after one particularly bad cleaning, I had enough. I knew I was going to have to switch back to Dr. Hsu at Hui Dental. Dr. Hsu re-did my bonding job, and it was amazing. I never thought I would be Yelping a dentist. But hey... there's a first time for everything :) I've always had terrible experiences at the dentist. To be honest, I've been traumatized by a past dentist who wouldn't stop drilling when I asked him to because I was not numb enough (I was getting a root canal). This caused a massive anxiety association with dentists. It was really hard to even set foot inside a dentists office after that. As much as I hated dentists, I knew I had to see one soon due to my love of sweets, and also just wanted to be on top of the general up-keeping. I was referred to Hui Dental by my fiance, who raved about his great experience there. So, despite my freaking out and finally running out of excuses, I made an appointment. When I walked into Hui Dental and was greeted by a warm and friendly staff in the front, (who, by the way, is wonderful with keeping in touch via text, since I rarely get to answer my phone during the day). Oh, and their office is really pretty. My first appointment was just for a general checkup, xrays, and cleaning. I was greeted by a bright and happy Dr. Thomas. I started to tell him of how I felt about dentists and that anxiety was a large factor. He assured me that he would do everything he can to make me feel comfortable. And that is exactly what he did. I had a cleaning done; he talked through his process as he was doing it, constantly asked if I was ok, and insured me that I can take breaks whenever I wanted. I had a some difficulty during the cleaning due to the drill sounds. Dr. Thomas recommended I get nitrous oxide for a cavity fill for a next appointment. I honestly dreaded coming back after hearing I needed a drill in my mouth :( But of course, #adulting. So I came to my said appointment and mentally prepared myself. *Side note: I was on laughing gas with the dentist who traumatized me from before...it did not help AT ALL. So even with gas, I was still terrified to get this filling* Dr. Thomas was so caring and constantly made sure I was ok. I still had some anxiety but I was able to get through it. He always made sure I was comfortable and always asked if I needed any breaks. So it turned out I needed 2 cavities filled, but he wanted to split them up into 2 different appointments because they were on opposite sides of my mouth. I came back for my 2nd appointment, I was so much more relaxed... I even pretty much fell half asleep! I'm writing this review because it is not easy to lift anxiety from someone. Dr. Thomas has pretty much extinguished my fear of dentists. He's by far, the best dentist I've ever had. (As I mentioned.. I LOVE sweets... so I've seen ALOT of dentists...) Dr. Hsu is awesome!!! No one really likes going to the dentist, but I really like Dr. Hsu. I have been going to him for over 15 years, way back when Hui Dental was at the old Fashion Island mall! He is always in a good mood and is very gentle. He is ultra cautious of not hurting you and reads your facial expressions as a gauge. I like how he describes what he is doing before he does it, throughout the process, rather than just charging in and getting it done. Dr. Hsu must really love his job, as he works late often and on the weekends. Because he is so great, I have referred several of my friends and co-workers there, not only because of the convenience but because Dr. Hsu is great! I had a cleaning and several cavities filled by Dr. Choi. Since I was a first time patient, he cleaned my teeth himself and took the time to get to know me. Pretty nice touch, especially for what is clearly a busy dental practice. When it came to the fillings, he was totally awesome throughout the entire experience. He explained clearly what was wrong, where the cavities were, what kind of filling he would use and why, etc. During the procedure he somehow managed to make it almost completely pain free. The worst part of the experience was the novocaine shot. I definitely got the sense that I was in skilled hands. He followed up that night to make sure nothing was wrong. The receptionist is very nice. So are the dentists. I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem unless they are some of those impatient people. This is a great place and you should check it out if you need a dentist. If you have an issue with your insurance it is YOUR responsibility to check if they are in your group or not. So I laugh at some of the bad reviews on here for blaming Hui for their own mistake. I would highly recommend this place to everyone: the receptionist and the dentist were very upfront and informative about everything I would need to know. I knew how much to expect to pay, how to pay, etc... I also felt at ease about the decision making process about what procedure the dentist would use. I had a chipped tooth and had to get it filled. The injection was the most pain free I've ever experienced. Besides a little jaw ache, but nothing sharp. The dentist, assistants, and receptionists were all very nice, and I plan to go back again for future cleanings, etc... Overall one of the best dental experiences I have had. I suppose I've been fortunate, but I've had several good dentists in my life. I had an incredible dentist in the midwest and was sad to leave them when I moved to California, so much so that the first few checkups I scheduled on visits home so I could keep seeing that dentist. When I finally decided I should have a dentist that lived in the same state I did, I asked a couple friends at work for their recommendations. Oddly, all of them gave me the same recommendation. I figured that had to be a good sign. From my very first visit with Dr. Hsu, I knew I was going to like this dentist as well. He's very thorough, and explains what he's doing as he goes. He even has a way to make a shot of novocaine not hurt--to me, that's worth the price of admission right there. As you can tell, I had a good first experience and have been going to Hui Dental Group for about ten years now. There was even a time when I had to have a root canal done and Dr. Hsu gave me his personal mobile number so I could call him if I had any issues as it healed. Now that's some service! The rest of the staff has always been very helpful and friendly as well. The hygienists have typically been very good, and many of them are a DDS themselves. This does seem to lead to reasonably frequent turn over in the hygienists, but they provide excellent service this way. Lastly, the office itself is great. The ceiling is painted like the sky, there's a TV and DVD player at each chair if you choose to use it or are in for a long procedure, and they are open 7 days a week! read more

I went to Hui Dental for a second opinion after encountering an unscrupulous crook of a dentist in SF via 1-800-dentist (never again!) who wanted to drill in 9 places and perform a root canal. I can honestly say that I've never before had such an outstanding experience in the medical world! I had the very good fortune to be treated by Dr Hui himself. He is kind and patient and thoughtful-- these traits are only outshined by his expertise which is superlative. I feel so very lucky to have met Dr Hui and have my dental problems handled so well. I also have had work done by Dr Hsu and he is excellent too-- another very competent dentist in the practice. Things run very smoothly in the office because of Rose's outstanding leadership. I have never had to wait which I consider very rare at a medical office. When I moved to Marin County several years ago, I tried to switch to a dentist in Marin. That's when I could really appreciate Dr Hui and Dr Hsu. There was really no comparison in the care I received. I've had lots of dentists. Ok ones, bad ones, truly terrifying ones (see: polish woman who punched me in the shoulder for being a smoker each time I visited.) Hui dental is such a welcome relief. The service there is as nice and friendly as the blue cloud painted sky on the ceiling. And these guys are great doctors! I've had dr. Hsu as my dentist for a number of years now, before recently switching to Dr. Jason Stuan. They're both very caring, thorough, and professional; my teeth are looking and feeling great. These guys even took my wisdom teeth out (the name of their surgeon slips my mind at the moment) and were really understanding of my nitrous - fueled nonsense. One thing to make sure of is that they bill your insurance correctly and to the full amount possible. While they are helpful, they are not as aggressive in making sure you get your money's worth as some of my previous dentists. read more

Hui Dental Group has been my dentist since 1999. Highly recommended. And remember, this was before social networking! The fact that I drive about 18 miles one way to see them doesn't phase me one bit either. Open 7 days a week, I can't tell you how many times HUI Dental has been accommodating to my schedule. In fact, there were an emergency scenario they handled quite well about 4 years ago. They even refer other tooth specialists for complex things out of their expertise. Everything about the office is top notch: from the administrative staff to the dentists...and everyone in between. At Hui Dental, no detail is too small, which is what they excel at. For example, for someone who has a small mouth like me, which makes it hard to keep my jaw open, the staff has a great bedside manner. They are currently work with me on my Invisalign (invisible braces) for basic cleaning and such, even though Invisalign is with a different dentist. A special shout-out to dentist Jimmy Kwan. DO NOT COME HERE!!! WHEN DENTIST HERE CANNOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN STAIN SPOTS AND CAVITIES! I came to Hui Dental Group because I saw these positive reviews on yelp since I'm new to the area and don't have a dentist yet. The feel of the office was modern and clean I will give credit to that and the staff were friendly as well. So after the cleaning just like any other dentists, Dr. Thomas went over potential teeth issues with me, but I was told by Dr. Thomas that I had two cavities which surprised me since I've not had any cavity issues in years. Since the cavities were minor I waited another 6 months to go to another dentist to get a second opinion. And turned out that I didn't have cavities Dr. Thomas mistakenly thought the stains on my teeth sealants were cavities! Two stars because Dr. Thomas is very nice and friendly but I'm not sure how knowledge or experienced he is. Overall the service was great but knowledge/experience is questionable. And if you're like me, being told to get dental work done, get a second opinion please! read more

First Yelp review from a long time member. I had to do it because I had such a great experience at Hui dental last week. The appointment process was quick and painless. Once I was at the office, the wait time was minimal and was seen by the dentist's assistant. Sorry, I don't remember he name but she was the assistant to my dentist, Dr. Kwan. She was, in one word, AWESOME! Explained to me in detail about everything she was about to do and made the process painless (literally). Then Dr. Kwan came in and did a complete (and very thorough) exam of all my teeth and pointed to me exactly where there were tiny cavities forming and scheduled me for follow-up appointments. easily the best dentist I've had and the cleanest, most welcoming (as much as a dentist's office can me) dental office I've ever been to.
