Great service provided by the Nova Scotia transit system. Small passenger ferries working from 6:30 AM to midnight taking passengers across every 15 minutes to 2 ports on the Dartmouth side, from the Halifax waterfront. Low priced and well worth every penny. Kids are free and seniors are reduced. They can carry over 300 passengers, and in the summertime it will fill up and you may have to wait for the next one. Bring exact change to make your life easier.

We had a two night stay last month in downtown Halifax. Fortunately Hurricane Dorian didn't do too much damage along the waterfront where we were staying at the Marriott. Our tour guide director provided some fun things to do including taking the ferry. The ferry terminal is located downtown near the Marriott hotel. Great way to spend a couple of hours. They've got a senior fare. For $2.00 CAD, you can ride across to Dartmouth & back within 90 minutes with the same ferry ticket. What a deal. We took the ferry on a bright sunny afternoon. Got a great view looking back into Halifax. We weren't sure we wanted to get off in Dartmouth or not, but we did. Did an quick walk around the pier area. Then hopped back onto the next ferry back to Halifax. There's indoor/outdoor seating. We experienced both. Highly recommended activity if you're in the area.

It was like being on a water-bound vacation, crossing the open waves, with the wind in my hair and the sun on my shoulders. I see the ferry as more a fun activity verses a mode of transportation. The sheer fact that I end up on the other side of the harbour is simply a bonus, and not necessarily my total reason for paying the $2.25. Opting to take the ferry with a bike in tow is easy. There's a rack on the lower level so once you board ship, you can easily secure your velo and head up to the deck to enjoy the weather (if it happens to be a lovely day like it was today). The ride is surprisingly short, but a perfect length to peer out over the ocean and to enjoy the scenery as you move effortlessly through the water. I wondered today what would happen if the ferry sank, and when I looked around I noticed life jacket bins along with life boats, so my answer was right before my eyes. Take the ferry; for fun or as a lovely mode of transportation. It's easy, safe, cheap and provides a nice reprieve from cars, walking or biking! Now if only I could become a pirate, I could set sail all the time...

To me, this is the only Metro Transit service that consistently doesn't disappoint me. Why? Because they are always on time (for me at least) and also it provides a chance to enjoy the beauty of Halifax and Dartmouth downtown from a ferry crossing over the Eastern Arm. Either on a sunny day or at night, you'd get to enjoy the view for as cheap as slightly over $2. But if you're a student at one of the universities, its a free ride with your U-pass. As for me, its one of the cheap thrills I indulge in once in a while whenever I decide to take a weekend trip to Dartmouth's Public Library at Alderny Landing or perhaps walk a little bit to TIBS Cafe to enjoy a delicious croissant.

$2.50, great deal. Less than 10 minutes. Nice view of Dartmouth, Halifax. The Dartmouth side needs renos, dumpy.

Great way to get to the other side! Halifax and Dartmouth ferries are used for those who have fifteen more minutes in their day and want to cruise the Halifax Harbor while either going home or going to work. The ferries can take you from Halifax to the Dartmouth, Alderney Terminal or the Dartmouth Woodside Terminal. And they of course go back to Halifax. The ride itself has always been pleasant and stress free. I have never met anyone who has bothered me, and the view is quite beautiful. About six or seven years ago, Halifax Harbor even had some Whales come into the Harbor for a month. During that time they loved playing with the ferries. I wasn't there but heard that was an amazing experience. Two out of the three ferry terminals have the famous, iconic coffee and donut shop known as Tim Hortons. The third one in Woodside does not have anything but is close to a Tim Hortons and several fast food restaurants. The ferry service is connected to the Metro Transit so it costs the same to go on the ferry as it does the bus, $2.25. But if you start on the bus and move to the ferry, you can just use a "transfer" ticket that you get from the bus driver and give that to the person working at the ferry terminal so you don't have to dish out another $2.25. And you could also get another transfer from the ferry person so that when you get to the other side you can use it to get back onto a bus. The ferry service hasn't changed at all since I started cruising on it over fifteen years ago. The biggest improvement I would like to see would be longer hours for the ferry service and perhaps one more ferry to cut down the wait time. But I always have a good time on the ferry and love standing on the deck, looking at the city and smelling the salt water. So for a fun experience and helping me get to where I want to go, four stars.

The ferries linking Halifax and Dartmouth are officially part of the Metro Transit system that provides public transportation all over the Halifax Regional Municipality. The reason the ferries are worth mentioning separately is that they can be one of the cheapest ways to get a boat-ride on the harbour - just for fun. Why pay tons of money for a cruise on a tall ship? Just jump on the ferry for $2.25 and cruise over to Dartmouth, maybe do a little walkabout over there and then hop back across the harbour again. You can ride out in the open air on the upper deck, and marvel at the skilled parking job by the ferry's captain when you arrive at the opposite terminal. For cheapskates like me, this is a great way to get some fresh air and a fun little ride.

If you ARE from the Maritimes, another coastal equivalent, or a band of scurvy-ridden pirates, you're probably well aware of the value of a day out on the water with a fully stocked bar slash the need for a first mate who doesn't know the meaning of 'mutiny'. The Tall Ship Silva is a local standard on the gorgeous Halifax waterfront, bringing regular boatloads of tourists and locals alike through tours of the habour, the Bedford Basin, and even the luxurious backyards of the houses on the North West Arm. That last one sounds creepy 'cause it kinda is. The Silva is roomy enough for a large crowd including a little jam space for a small band (if your party brought one along or booked them) and rocking out to Barrett's Privateers and Great Big Sea covers. A small room with a bar has comfortable bank seating for those who don't quite have their sea legs or weren't told that they probably shouldn't try to rock heels while soaring the high seas. Plus it has all the booze - you'll want to make note of this. The larger downstairs dining room is pretty basic but can be fully decked out with custom meal menus and catering for longer treks and can be particularly useful as one of two covered rooms (the bar is the other) for those times when the weather makes you want to just throw yourself overboard to put yourself out of your misery. Based on what they do and how they do it, the Silva definitely earns its four stars from me. The only thing is that your experience entirely depends on who goes with you, and how the weather is while you're out. If you can't nail down at least one of these two, you're probably not going to love it. Otherwise, it's a great venue for theme, office, or fundraiser parties!

There's nothing quite like feeling swindled at five in the morning before a twelve-hour travel day,…read morea fact of which I was reminded yesterday when Flytime Taxi showed up outside of my house for a trip to the airport. Since I generally don't like surprises that early nor the looming fear of missing a flight, I purposely went ahead and booked a town car to be at my house at an ungodly hour to know that all I had to do was roll out of bed. I booked online through Flytime - a website with apparently mixed messages as to whether they are a town car or limo service - prepaid at a much higher rate than your average cab, got a confirmation by text message, and was feeling pretty good about the situation. The convenience of online/mobile reservations kind of rocked my socks. The following morning, I received an uninvited 'wake-up call' from Flytime at 4:45am. Not cool. If someone has the foresight to prebook a town car, they likely are the type of person who knows how to also set an alarm. Strange. Stranger still, they were already parked outside of my house - clearly worried at the lack of lights on. Wake-up call, or covering their own asses? I'll let you be the judge. But hey, at least they were there on time! It wasn't until my way out the door that I realized it was a Yellow Cab. A plain, old, dated Yellow Cab. No leather seats, no Lincoln emblems, just the same car I could wave down at Pizza Corner or call from Bob's. Suddenly, I was paying $20 more for the same fifteen minute drive from my house to the airport for absolutely no reason. I also had to give him directions. So pretty much the opposite of what I wanted.

Very reliable. I receive a reminder text or call the night before early morning airport runs and…read morethe drivers always show up on time.
