Fortunately, en route to visit the gardens in Capel Manor College down the street, I was able to spot the Pied Bull before things got out of hand. Expecting the usual pub mystery meats covered in clotted cheese, we were surprised to find that this establishment considers itself something of a gastro-pub serving a variety of odd "fusion" dishes, including a crepe-like ratatouille pancake, decent vegetable puree soup, chorizo covered in what apparently passes here for haloumi cheese, and a tuna steak that is of course cooked all the way through until it is dead, since, although great strides have been made, you Brits have a long way to go before you become acclimated to seared raw fish.
