We went to visit family and they brought us here for dinner, and it was great! The hubby got a chicken sandwich which he really liked, I got the sole which was really well made, and everyone one else seemed to really like their food! Overall good experience here for lunch this Saturday, with some negatives. I got seated right away and got prompt table service. I ordered the soup of the day- roasted cauliflower and pesto- and two starters, the scallops, celeriac, pancetta (removed that bc I'm veg) and hazelnuts and the roast squash, beets (which I asked to be removed), burnt aubergine, quinoa, cauliflower and onion "granola." The soup comes with two slices of white baguette bread and butter but the waitress returned with substitute brown bread and bread when I asked (although she looked perturbed when I did ask). I even got an extra slice of brown bread vs the white bread. The good-sized portion of the creamy, hot, dun-coloured soup looked lovely, with a hearty dollop of pesto in the centre. But... it was so bland. I ate most of it to not waste food and because I was cold. But a disappointment indeed. The scallops were lovely, not being overtly fishy, and with three on the plate, I was happy. Plus hazelnuts + anything is good! Similar praise for the squash dish and it's good portion size. The remaining service was .... OK. I literally yelled aloud few times to get a server's attention to no avail so had to go up to him finally. Dinking a star for that. read more

We were keen to try somewhere in Walthamstow Village and a trawl through Yelp suggested Eat 17 as a place to try. It is situated on Orford Road and as it was a warm Saturday afternoon we ate outside plus there were no seats inside. There were a few items on the menu but I ordered Fish and Chips. They coped well with my wife's oddball dietary requirements during July (no bread, pasta etc) and were able to customise the meal to suit. They also served a range of lesser known beers which was a plus and the food was reasonably priced by London standards. The service was a little slow but then again it was a busy Saturday. read more

Living in Walthamstow I feel like it's kind of my civic duty to visit all the interesting restaurants and bars in my area and report back here about them ;) The one place I wanted to visit for a while was Eat 17 and even though it's located a bit out off view it was definitely worth the visit. Eat 17 is a pub, but a really nice one. The restaurant is divided in two sections, the bar and lounge area and the dining area. I went in on a Saturday afternoon so the place was packed but I did manage to get a table from the lounge and that worked fine for me. One very big negative was that they close the place from 3pm until 6pm on a Saturday, so when I walked in it was probably 2.15pm so I didn't have much time to enjoy my lunch. Shame. The time I did spend there I really enjoyed. I had good service and I liked the food. I went with the classic Fish & Chips, but it was a really top notch, high quality Fish & Chips. I also ordered some nice local craft beer (Meantime Pilsner if my memory serves me right) which was absolutely spot on and went well with my dish! The decorations and the general look and feel of the place is modern, maybe even border-line hipster but I like it. It's a cool place and hopefully more places like that will find their way to Walthamstow in the near future. read more

This is a good local place, for good local people. And by 'good local people', I mean ex-hipsters who have moved to Walthamstow to have babies. Eat 17 is a proper proprietor of gentrified food, with its trifecta of 'Bs': 1. brunch 2. burgers 3. bacon Eat 17 does other things, of course, but all you really have to know is that it's doing modern British food, and it's doing it well. And that it sells jam with bacon in it. You might say, 'Yeah, well my local proprietor of gentrified food is great!' and you'd be right, my friend. It probably is. Is Eat 17 better? Possibly. Should you make a special trip to Walthamstow? Perhaps not. Would you like this place if you lived nearby? Absolutely. ...so long as you're in your 30s, have or are thinking about having children, and like the idea of bacon jam. read more

Took a trip out East to catch up with sone friends tgat have recently bought property out this way, decided to hit "the village" for some brunch and ended up in Eat 17. Coming from fairly central we are a bit spoilt for choice when it comes to decent brunch places, and it would be unfair to say this place is on the same level. However the venue is very welcoming and the manager (possibly owner) was chatty. The service was ok, we had to request ordered items twice that had been forgotten and eventually they gave us a coffee for free (nice touch) The menu seemed to be a blend of traditional London cafe and modern brunch restaurant, I went for a full English! It was pretty good not too greasy and a decent mix of the traditional components I.e. egg, bacon, hash browns, beans... etc. Unfortunately (for me) my bacon was a quarter of the portion everyone else had and over cooked. The coffee was actually very good!! The final bill was below that of somewhere central and seemed fair for what we had. I like this place and I would definitely recommend it to people that are in the area. read more

This is one of those hidden gems in the heart of Walthamstow. I've heard it can be very hard to get a table here but we were walking past early afternoon one Sunday and thought we'd try our luck for a spot of lunch. We got a table immediately. The Sunday roasts all around us looked delicious and smelled amazing but we opted for something a little different - the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger. First off, because i'm a major chips fan i'll talk about them. They're big and chunky which is definitely the best kind. They're light and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. So they're pretty much perfect (in my opinion!) The burger itself was a pretty good size, it was a very interesting mix of flavours, not what I was expecting, but good/different. I'd certainly get it again! The atmosphere was definitely more families and gossipy women (ha!) but it was nice enough. It has a really nice vibe to it. It feels much nicer than many restaurants in Walthamstow. The service was great and very quick and the menu had plenty of options to choose from. I do wish they would specify food allergies like gluten free etc because that makes dining in places much harder if you don't know what you can eat! Otherwise I really liked this place and I will certainly be back. read more

Busy Sunday lunchtime. I had an amazing barley risotto. The sauce on the scallops was a bit gloopy. I also had crostini with mascarpone and chorizo jam. My new favourite thing, the chorizo jam. I bought some in Waitrose yesterday. Delicious ! We'd been turned away the night before but the guy remembered us the next day and thanked us for coming back. Nice touch. read more

Went here a few weeks ago for the first time to meet a friend for lunch. When i said, "I'll meet you in Walthamstow" I could hear the uncertainty in her voice when she said "OK"but when I steered her past the tube station and towards 'the village' I noticed the apprehension disappear. We arrived a few minutes after 12 and it was very quiet, waiting staff very friendly and the menu more extensive than either of us imagined. In the end we both plumped for the burger which was presented on a slate tile with a modest portion of double fried chips and came with cheese and bacon as standard with an onion chutney. I was delicious and ensured a return visit. For quality of food and service it was priced very reasonably and after 90 minutes when we left we realised it was packed. Yes, lots of yummy mummy's and their kids but I kinda liked that. read more

I've never left a bad review on Yelp but...seriously, can there please be another brunch place around here? In the interest of full disclosure, I take brunch seriously as an American who sets aside 2 sacred hours a week to eat egg dishes in good company. That is why I feel compelled to say these things about Eat17 (great name). Eat17 is a bad impression of a brunch spot; yes, have the hours right but the menu is tiny and boring, the waiters don't care, and the food is so terrible it barely passes as a snack, let alone brunch. It's actually the same deal with any meal here; I've been 3 times and it's always been blah. Think Wetherspoons with pretension. I live down the road and am very realistic about the dining options in the area, but Eat17 is just ridiculous. Mondragone is a good restaurant and down the road- invest in the 20 extra steps. read more

I have visited eat 17 a few times since it opened. It's had a bit of a redesign in the past year and looks great. There's a bar area which is ideal if like me, you often turn up early so it gives you somewhere to sit and have a drink whilst you wait for the rest of the party to arrive. They also do half price cocktails mid week - always a plus! The food in here is always great, the menu is small but has been different every time I've gone which is nice as you get to try something new each time. On my most recent trip I had the braised lamb shoulder, it was melt in your mouth delicious - I'd definitely recommend if you're going there and it's still on the menu! The only reason I can't give this review 5 stars is the service, it is not bad as such but can be slow. The last time I went, the drinks took ages to arrive, I ordered a drink when my main arrived but it didn't come until I'd finished eating (it should be said that I eat fairly slow too). The time before that however it felt rushed, our mains were bought out whilst we were eating a starter (again - I'm not the speediest eater), they kindly took them back to the kitchen but then as soon as I finished my last bite they bought them out and put them on the table. I personally like 5-10 minutes break in between starters and mains! This wouldn't put me off visiting again though, the staff are very friendly and the food is consistently good! read more

My other half suggested this place and I agreed to go along as we were in the area. My interest didn't really begin until I saw the menu. There were many options on there which I would have happily ordered which doesn't happen often. The chicken wings were delish as was my sea bream main and my fella said it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had. The chips were yummy, so much so I pinched about 10 of them!!! We followed the 'when in Rome' rule and opted for desert as many other guests had. I punted for the blood orange triffle and him the banana sticky toffee pudding. Both were scrumptious and we literally scraped our plates clean. Last but not least, the staff are amazing. Really friendly and chatty without any air of inconvenience you get when you take so long salivating over the menu you forget to choose the drink you want and have to ask the waitress to please give you two more mins. Okay, so the names a bit punny and the decor at first glance is a bit nineties gastro-pubby, all stripped floors and bright lights. But you know something? This place works. Happily, unlike all those nineties gastro-pubs, they don't cram you in. There are large tables, well spaced, giving you the aural room to chat without having to shout. And the service is cooly professional too. But, you know, whatever. Because you don't come here for the decor. Or even the service. You come here for the food. The well-cooked, gut-bustingly large portions of scrumptious food. I had three wild boar sausages the size of small bananas on a mountain of mustard mash. They were cooked just right - all moist, meaty and flavourful with the right amount of fat. And they're sourced from the butcher (The East London Sausage Co) across the road. They obviously know a good thing when they see it. Slow cooked pork shoulder on a mound of cabbage just fell into soft slivers of meat at the merest wave of a fork. It was delicious - and properly flavoured too - none of this flavourless lean factory-farmed rubbish here. Not to forget the veggie stuff either. They went beyond the restaurant standard pasta to serve some interesting looking food. But unless you're a dedicated vegetarian, the meat is the real star here. Overall, very good value, large portions of well cooked, well-sourced and tasty unpretentious grub. read more

It can be difficult to get a table here during busy periods, but the food is definitely worth the wait. The staff are friendly and always try to accomodate you at the bar for a quick bite if the restaurant is packed. The menu has become more noticeably American over the past couple of years, with more focus on food like burgers and pulled pork. Everything is always delicious! read more

Maybe the weather added to the splendor of this place, but we loved it! It was a hot day, and we sat outside in the back enjoying a cold drink and delicious food. Yeah, it's a bit weird to be served chips in a mini deep fat fry basket, and our table wasn't actually clean, but the chips tasted GOOD and the waitress was very friendly and apologetic when we pointed out the mess on the table. I would go back here again, because of the friendly staff, the tasty food and because we got value for money. read more

Superbly textured, slightly sweet buttermilk fried chicken burger--yes. Perfectly crisp, no nonsense chips--yes. Half bottle of delightful Spanish white--yes. Heck, even the salty, garlicky-crusted bread is a big yes. Above all, we were served by a young guy who had lived in E17 all his life, and was very passionate about telling us how it has changed, though Eat 17 still had a lot of the same local clientele. We called ahead to get seated for 10pm on a Monday--they kept the kitchen open just for us, and didn't usher us out even though we were the last diners by a long shot. Attentive and engaging service--yes. Crab and avocado salad starter was fresh and generously portioned, scallops starter was too good for my friend to share, and his hake and chorizo fish of the day main was salty but tasty. We didn't have the nerve to ask for dessert, but the banana sticky toffee pudding seems worth coming back for, along with eating everything I had all over again. Good bottled beer selection, too. Because why not, while you're being so darn excellent. read more

I went here last friday night. The place was pleasantly full. For starters I had the potted duck, a very generous portion beautifully presented on a slate with delicate toasted brioche and handmade red onion chutney. Main course was chicken breast in wild mushroom sauce, followed by Walthamstow mess for dessert - lovely fresh mixed berries with meringue and cream. The bill came to £27 each for 3 courses plus a bottle of wine. All very tasty - would definately reccomend this place! read more

Visited this place today. Pretty good food. I had the duck with a salad and bread. I don't usually eat salad but I thought I would try this one. Was very nice and the bread was good too. I ordered a rhubarb crumble which I wasn't so keen on, but it was okay. The place is really high quality in general with a nice bar. It is a bit pricey though but the staff are quite polite. Next door they have an extension of the restaurant where they sell pizza. I have to try it one day. The free wifi is a great addition too, I'm always a fan of a place that has free wifi! Well Walthamstow village was delightful but I was let down a bit by the food in this high end restautant. Steak tartar starter was nice but overpowered by the added sauce. And the bread was pretty plain. The buttered chicken main just didn't work for me in a burger. Couldn't really eat it as a burger as it was too heavy. And fried chicken basically was basic. Eat 17 how now been revamped into a classy and I think unprenetious restaurant open all day serving breakfasts lunches and eveing meals. The Restaurant decor is simple and understated. With clean lines. For lunch I chose homemade Cauliflower soup served with bread cooked in mini flowerpots! Served up on a slate plate with wonderful unsalted butter. The soup was scrummy the bread oven warm(not microwaved) . Perfect! The waiting staff were freindly and did not hover waiting to whisk the plate away. The restaurant is now joined to a cosy bar. With a great ambience. Tiled floor and cosy sofas and chairs. Well done Eat 17 for bringing a little bit of class to Walthamstow Village. read more

I have not had a meal this good since I went to the Michelin starred Benares! I went here having heard some good reviews from other members of my family and I was not disappointed. The place was full with a mixed crowd ranging from mothers with children to business people and couples. Service was friendly and efficient, decor unobtrusive and there was a spacious feel to the place. I went for the set menu which was £15 for 3 courses. I had smoked trout with a black pudding salad, Venison with celeriac mash and apple crumble. The tastes were really really good, perfectly matched flavours, well cooked and seasoned and presented well. My favourite was the Apply crumble but I loved the venison and the salad with the smoked trout was wonderful. Other dishes sampled by the family were fish and chips (very good), a burger (excellent), potted duck (very very good), sticky toffee pudding (so good it defies description), chocolate brownie with hazelnut ice cream (good, good, good!) elderflower and gooseberry trifle (terrific). All this with a bottle of wine for under £80 - great value. Some people might think Walthamstow is a destination for good food lovers - they really are mistaken! read more

I love Eat 17. The food is near to fine dining levels. Everything is Fresh, Tasty and well cooked. The restaurant itself is quite small but looks really nice and is very clean. All of the above comes at a premium though and you will pay more that other local places but then the quality is so much better than them. This is a great place to visit!! read more

I had SUCH a lovely Saturday night dinner here with my boyfriend - we had to go a bit early as they were fully booked after 7pm, but it was so worth it. The food, from the crustini with mascerpone and chorizo jam starter, the main course duck with dauphinoise potatoes and 5 spice spinach, to the dessert (we shared nectarine crumble and chocolate brownie with raspberry sorbet) were just absolutely delicious - perfect portion sizes, a damned good bottle of affordable Malbec, and affable service thrown in to boot. We just had a super pleasant evening here, highly recommend it. Nice atmosphere, great decor, super cute garden where they grow their own veggies. I'm eager to back and try them for brunch one day! Slightly overpriced it is, but it is one of the good places to eat in the area. The food has always been great, for the few times I've been there with friends. It might look a bit too pretentious, but I don't really care, if they serve with a smile. I've never had to wait long to be seated(maybe I've been lucky), on a busy Sunday the waiting time was about 5 minutes for a table for two. Helps being a 30 something with a toddler as that's what most of the clientele are. Eat 17 is an utter gem. Brilliant food. Delicious. Very well presented. A real treat. I have eaten here on at least half a dozen occasions and have rarely been disappointed. I'm surprised that other reviewers have found it over priced. For the quality, this is fantastic value, and half the price you'd pay for the same quality in the West End. Lovely atmosphere too. Just fantastic! :-) My only disappointments. They have stopped doing the wonderful flowerpot bread - and stopped serving Brodies beer! read more
