I have been living in uptown Whittier for 7 months and had yet made the effort to walk down Greenleaf. I had seen this bookstore before but had never been inside and now that I have oh.em.gee good luck keeping me away! The mini me and I went on an adventure to discover our backyard (literally we walked from home) and from the moment I walked in it was love at first sight. From the smell of books to the creaking wooden floors, I was in a daze with the wall-to-wall shelves of books. My son was really excited to peruse through the kids books and my nostalgia bone was tickled when I saw the display of RL Stein's Goosebumps! We each walked out with a book and I am not going to lie, I came back today (alone) to get lost among the aisles uninterrupted....and scored my Trueman Copote paperback! Both times the cashiers were friendly and told me about their buy back program. I look forward to being a regular and to indulge my inner geek for half the price! read more

Like a phoenix from the flame, Half Off Books emerged to pick up where the local darling The Little Old Bookshop left off, and so far is doing a mighty fine job at it. Half Off Books now has a slightly different layout and feel than tLOB had in that it seems to market almost exclusively old and used books, and at prices that are sure to draw people in (half off publisher's price). The store buys films, records, books, magazines, and other media cash, and is prompt to put the inventory onto their shelves, recreating a unique bartering and swap feeling, as it is not uncommon for patrons to cash out their old books/etc. and peruse the aisles and pick out something new-er. Last night I was here as part of a recently launched, once a month (2nd Wednesday of the month), Spoken word Open Mic (while there was some music, an a stand alone comic), that had delicious pastries as well as tea and coffee available for a modest price. The performances were a big credit to the Whittier community, and I am sure the word will be out for next month's gathering. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and the store itself engages the eye with its layout as if there is a lot of buzz gathering about the deals and dealings here. All in all, while it makes one sad to hear about closing bookstores in nearby Pico Rivera and La Habra, it's nice to know Uptown Whittier is willing to put up a good fight to keep a bookstore going. read more

If your into books it can take a good chunk of time out of your day to look around and see all the interesting books they store. I would return if I was looking for something new and random. so i was looking for some new records to listen too and i got a childish gambino, bobby brown, etc . well ... of course i buy them which was just a chunk of money like 40 bucks . i come home to okay them ; while the childish gambino one played fine except for the first song on the album, it was all scratched badly . the bobby brown was was TERRIBLY scratched to the point where the song was repeating the words . they didn't even give me a receipt to return it i would not recommend just a waste of money in my opinion. read more

This is one of the best books I've read yet, it's a really good and suspenseful story filled with romance and intelligence. Check out Amazon books and look up Author Shawna Mccallister "The Disturbed". The book may have saved my life! Dont let other people who dont read discourage you. This book is a hit to and should be a movie. When someone does something and it makes a difference it doesn't matter how big of a difference you make the point is the book is great check it out!! I could spend a loooott of time in here & still feel like there's more to explore. The first time I came here- I spent an hour and a half reading in one of the aisles and not one person working there bothered me, which is something I like! I don't like to be hassled to much about how I'm doing and all that.. There's a great selection of books, DVDS, musics, electronics, CDs, video games , and more! It's worth taking a look through - might find a sweet bargain! I found two great manga books for 1$ each so I thought that was a great buy! They've got lots on sale too so don't forget to have a look see in that section. I hear they buy stuff too so maybe I'll look into selling some stuff to them someday read more

Half off is a great little book store! The staff is nice and friendly, the selection is pretty decent, and the recommended books are usually pretty awesome too. I walk by the recommended ones and have to tear myself away because I already have like five books I want to buy. My fiancee and I drive an hour to this place because it's one of our favorite places to go for books. It's priced well, they have a lot of what we want, and it's not a huge chain. Support your local books stores! We would go here even more if it wasn't so far, but every time we go we end up leaving with at least ten books. read more

I liked this place a lot, I could spend a couple hours looking through all the books they have. It's a random selection of stuff and I'm sure there are some treasures buried inside. I'm very interested in their Open Mic poetry event, so I'll be checking that out soon. I will say I did buy a couple poetry books and out of curiosity I peeled back their sticker and the retail price was 6.99 for a 2008 collection of 100 poems and their price was 6.97 haha so hey I saved a few cents... but honestly I think that happened because most their books are priced 6-8 dollars regardless because my other books were greatly reduced from the retail price... so just be sure to compare prices on a title just in case :P Great place for kids books. My son found a bunch he liked for good prices! Staff was friendly though, cute lil dog roaming around. I'll definitely be back! read more

Super impressed with this bookstore!! Friendly employees, clean bathroom, tons of affordable books! There's a big comic section, with bins to pick from. The children's books are all adorable, lots of new ones. Clearance sections is INSANE! 25 cents for hardbacks, like "catching fire!" The adult section is separated by authors, and genre. The new books are on display, and those are full priced. (Minus $1 usually). For instance, if a book is priced at $14.99, they'll usually sell it for $14. One table had a ton of new books, filled with classic titles. The best part is u could just browse the shelf right next to the table to find the same books, second hand, for half the price! The books are all in good condition. Some had notes written in them, but those are usually a little cheaper than half price. I love lightly worn books, so second hand books are my favorite! They also buy back books and media. Next time imma definitely go and see what I can get for my old books!!! Love this place and will be going back a lot :] it is slightly most expensive than other second hand book stores, but they offer newer books. It's worth what u pay :] read more

I remember looking up bookstores that weren't Barnes and Noble and this was it. This is the closest bookstore to me (in North Orange County)! It's a used bookstore with a handful of new books as well. I loved browsing through this very large shop that's organized by genres. I also loved that the alcove for romance novels is painted pink! This is a great space to browse and there is some space to enjoy as well. read more

Awesome bookstore! You'll come across many different selections . Although I will say the categories/genres are in an unorganized set-up. Given the number of books on a shelf - looking around for a specific one can be a bit overwhelming. The employee told me I can search alphabetically but when I went to do so, letters were mixed in with each-other. Overall neat bookstore + friendly service. Seriously no, I decided to visit this place after shopping around the nearby shops, I happened to be holding a reusable bag with stuff I bought at a shop around the street, the second I walked in, the workers gave me dirty looks and looked at me strange as if I came to steal then of course another worker approaches me and follows me around making me feel super uncomfortable, they could've politely told me to leave my bag at the counter but nope, was unfairly treated like a criminal and a shoplifter, I was hoping to buy some books and some dvd's but that treatment was just rude, Never going back read more

Amazing experience here! There is suchhhh a great selection of books to choose from (new AND used) there something for everyone here. I went in today just to have a look around but wasn't expecting much because other bargain bookstores I've been to have been slim pickings. But there are so many great choices. I ended up buying 12 books. I wanted to buy more but in the interest of my pockets, i took a few out of my basket until next time. The used books are in very good condition as well! The staff here are so kind and helpful and go out of their way to make sure they thoroughly look for what you want or get you a better price on a used version of the book you're interested in. I noticed they also carry a lot of dvds and manga. They also buy books! I haven't sold anything here yet but will definitely have to bring them some books i don't read anymore. I can't wait to come back and look around some more! read more

This cozy used bookstore is a favorite of mine and my teenage daughters. The staff knows their literature, and is always very helpful. We'll go in to buy a book or two and we leave with tote bags full of novels because it is so affordable. When it came time for my soon-to-be 15-year-old daughter to choose what she wanted to do for her birthday party, she knew it had to be something to do with books. We reached out to the store through the contact email on the website and asked if they would be willing to let us have a birthday party with a scavenger hunt in their store. Not only were they willing to accommodate it, they were so supportive of a teenage reader and frequent customer celebrating a life milestone with them. Jason from the staff interviewed my daughter to understand her favorite books and other trivia that makes her unique. He put together questions to guide the guests through the store on the scavenger hunt. Out of 16 questions the guests got 13 right on each team but Jason thought of a bonus tiebreaker question so we had a clear winner. For their party favor, I let each child pick a book and put it in one of the store's tote bags with candy and a bookmark. The kids loved it and my daughter said it was her favorite birthday. I can't think these lovely people that run the store enough for making my daughter's birthday so special. I highly recommend this local treasure. read more

They do have a lot of books but how do you think they got them. It's called low-ball buying. I found out about them right here on yelp and saw they buy old books. I called them up and they were interested in my 20 year collection of vintage National Geographic magazines, but they would not even give me a hint on what they would pay. I understood, it was sight unseen. I am almost 70 years old and it took me over an hour to carry over 200 pounds of book from my 2nd floor to my car. I also brought a couple boxes of other books and video games. After a 30 minute drive I was lucky to park right in front of the store. I went in and found the guy I spoke with on the phone. He came out to my car and said to bring them all to the back of the store. Even after looking at all those books he would not give a hint on what he would pay. He did help a bit but I could tell he really didn't want to lug them all the way to the back. Once back there he basically said for me to go wander around the store so he can put a value on every book so he can quote me a price. So I wandered off and browsed a bit but saw them pushing them around in little stacks. After 20 minutes some girl with green hair motioned me over. The guy had disappeared. She went through a little speech about this one book that has the most value and then found fault with every other book or game on the counter. If they were so worthless why was I told to bring them on in? To make this story shorter, she offered me $4.00 YES, FOUR DOLLARS. I was speechless I was sure I did not hear her correctly. But, she reassured me she said four. Then she said if I did not want to accept her offer then no problem I could put them all back in my car (remember 200 lbs) and take them home. What could I say, I am pushing 70? I said OK, but can I at least take back two or three that I really liked? Then she said: "If you take back even one book I will only pay one dollar for everything" How many of you readers have this happen to you? I bet she didn't even think this old man was internet savvy or even heard of yelp. I had my first computer before she was born. So, a warning to all you yelpers take your books someplace else to sell or donate them. They will only pay you 2¢ on the dollar. read more

I lived in Whittier for twenty years. I still consider it my home. I will admit, having known the previous owners of this store very well, I was saddened when they had to sell this once great Whittier destination for books. Therefore I am biased. You have been warned. I have been coming to the Little Old Bookshop (what Half-Off was originally called) for over twenty years. I adored that store. Always helpful and a knowledgeable staff. Great books at great prices. I used to like when the shop was open until 10 PM back in the old days, when Whittier was safe to venture out into Uptown without fear of the gangs and thugs that seem to be a constant now. I decided to try the store as it is today, under the new owners and such. Can't say I was impressed. A few of the reviews here comment on their VAST selection of books. They have this array due to the years and effort of careful cultivation by all the previous owners. This is a BOOKSTORE people. So there are comfy places to sit. Um...since when did a bookstore become a library? That is why I detest Borders and other similar chain stores. If I go into a NEW bookstore, I want my book to be NEW, not previously read or fingered by an previous "customer" who was either too broke or selfish to buy the damn thing. I don't want to have to step over someone's shoes or backpack to get to a book section. At a used bookstore, I know the books will be used. Not a problem. I do have an issue with people who expect a bookstore to pose as a library. Perhaps the owners think the majority of their customers want this, but this customer can do without. Like I said, a bookstore is not a public library nor should people feel entitled that Half Off should provide them one. I SO can't fault them for not having a public bathroom. Do I really need to explain this one? I want a bookstore to have a courteous and knowledgeable staff. Can't fault Half Off there. The person who was there did have a decent knowledge of books. However, I had to ask more than once if I could get used help. It was a slow afternoon. I was the only one in there with the exception of a guy trying to sell his books. Well, to be fair, there were high school and college age kids sitting in all the couches and the floor space. Asking them to kindly move was like asking them to go get a root canal. What the hell? As I was paying for a book, another sales clerk was offering that guy FIVE DOLLARS for his huge lot of books. Many were very. very cool. What is that about? Five dollars. Like someone else who reviewed here suggested: donate your books. Five bucks. Really? I'd like to say I will be back but at this time, I just don't know. Sad really.
