To eat we got the Maple Longjohn and cinnamon doughnut. Then an egg, cheese and tomato pesto egg sandwich. Our favorite doughnuts by far, would definitely go back. Really liked the egg sandwich, it came on a croissant bun which was very flavorful. Our tummy's left happy here! It was nice to sit outside to enjoy our breakfast. The barista was very friendly. Ate a plain cake donut on the road home. Immediately evident that these are not your typical donut. I loved them, but I wanted a second opinion (Rudy doesn't count, he loves everything). After eyeing this place for ages, I managed to convince a friend to pick up Half N Half before work. They were out of the mini-filled Marocchino Bombas, so they upgraded it to a Bismarck free of charge which was very sweet. Will definitely be back to try their pineapple fritter. The Georgette (3.25/5): I wanted this to be fluffier and moister on the inside. It ended up eating a bit dry and I'm normally a sucker for cinnamon sugar options. Bananas Foster Bismarck (4.25/5): Caramelized banana flavor comes through beautifully and cream is fluffy and soft. Not sure if it's quite as pillowy as The Flour Box, but I definitely prefer the flavor profiles here. Marocchino Bismarck (4.5/5): This one is a sleeper hit. Same comment on the dough as above, but the super luscious coffee cream and extremely light sugar glaze made this my favorite option. Vanilla Old Fashioned (4.25/5): This was surprisingly delicious! I've visited Half and Half Doughnut Co twice now and received stellar donuts on both visits. They're kind of on the pricier end of donut shops, even for Seattle, but I think the quality is worth it. I got four different old fashioned donuts on my most recent visit: Plain Chocolate, La Canela Cinnamon Maple, Red Velvet, Chocolate Glazed Vanilla ($5.55 each): I'm not going over each one individually. Instead, I'll say that as a whole, the base old fashioned is fantastic. It's fried until the exterior has a harder, almost crunchy fried layer, but the interior doesn't dry out and remains cakey in texture. I'd say it is a little on the drier side, but that's actually my preference. There is a density that the teeth sink into in a satisfying way. The donuts are not like 90% of donut shops that use commercial donut premix served with cloyingly sweet glazes. Instead, these have the perfect sweetness level for me when I want something sweeter than not-too-sweet, which is nowhere near how terribly sweet a typical donut shop is. I also got a half dozen cinnamon donut holes, which are also spectacular. In this case, they are mochi-based, giving a fantastic bouncy quality, covered with cinnamon and sugar. These are the best doughnuts I've had since moving to Seattle a couple of months ago. I'm guessing that a portion of people won't like these donuts because they aren't sweet enough and they hate having textural contrast. For everyone else, these are fantastic, at least for those who can stomach the price. read more

I got got by Instagram unfortunately. I came across a video of their Boston cream bismark and I thought "I've gotta have that" and went the very next day to grab one. I was left extremely disappointed. First was the size. Nestled in the heart of Capitol Hill, Half and Half is a small shop that astonishingly manages to sell below-average doughnuts at exorbitant prices. I've had several opportunities to try a variety of them, and came away disappointed each time. The latest pack I got included: Plain Old Fashioned (2/5) - Just fried, and sadly dry, dough with no topping at all. I thought this might be good in a purist sort of way, but... it's not. Don't bother. Pineapple Fritter (1.5/5) - Somehow actually had a decent amount of pineapple, but managed not to taste like pineapple at all. Or taste like anything besides sugar, for that matter. And the dough was pretty tough. Triple Dark Chocolate (4/5) - By far the best one, due to it being coated in a pretty decent chocolate coating. Glazed Donut (1/5) - One of the worst doughnuts I've ever had. I sometimes hear doughnuts described as "light and fluffy" -- well, this is the complete opposite. It felt like eating a loaf of white bread with some glaze on top. These 4 are around $17 total. Based on the premium pricing, you might be expecting premium quality in return, but don't be fooled. The flavors are not just sweet, they're either sweet and bitter, sweet and sour, or sweet and savory. My favorite items here are definitely the bombas. The size is perfect, not as big of a commitment as a regular filled donut but just enough to be satisfying. The donut is fluffy and tender and there is the perfect ratio of bread to filling. The best filling flavor is the bananas foster, amazing banana flavor complemented by the slightly bitter caramel notes. I also really enjoy the fritters here. They're fluffy and tender like the bombas but have a bit more chew and breadiness. I thought the pineapple fritter was super interesting because I've never seen a pineapple fritter before. The maple pecan fritter was sweet and had a light maple flavor which went really well with the nutty and slightly savory pecans. I still maintain these are the best doughnuts In Seattle. Far superior to Top Pot which everyone seems to clamor for even though their doughnuts are mediocre. The problem is you never know what their hours are going to be. They will just be randomly closed on any given day, most of the time with no notice. I understand they may be experiencing staffing issues. But I am so frustrated with this place. Just today I stopped by and they were "Closed for the holiday weekend." So closed on a Saturday, closed on Sunday (they've been closed the past several Sundays, and then closed Monday and Tuesday.) Their posted hours are never accurate. Even the hours here on Yelp are not correct. I won't continue going out of my way to visit a place that may or may not be open. I stopped in with my mom early morning on a Thursday after a gym class (it's all about balance) and they had plenty of selection with a line out the door! Originally, one of my critique was the high price but now everything is pricy so this is actually standard. It's around $4-5 a donut. This time around, I tried Regular old fashioned and the canela old fashioned - both hit the mark in terms of texture. It has a slight crunch on the outside that is nostalgic. The canela flavor could be stronger as you have to really scrutinize between the two to tell a difference. Chocolate hazelnut bombolini - really soft and airy and the cream is also very light and fluffy. Feels like you're eating a tiramisu Pineapple fritter - this one was interesting. My husband didn't like it because the texture was off to him. I really enjoyed it because there's pineapple chunks in it and it tastes great. I am the biggest old fashioned donut fan and it is basically the only type of donut I will eat so I was stoked to try Half and Half while I was in Seattle! We came around noon on a Sunday and they still had a good selection. We got the pineapple fritter (amazing yum and fresh chunks of pineapple!!), mexican hot chocolate (a little spicy which I love), and the chai (tasted just like a chai lol). Ok, so to each his own, you know? Blessings to individual taste and all. That said, walking into this place feels like walking into a European cafe from another century. I also got a vanilla glazed old fashioned to go and ordered myself a sous-vide bacon and caramelized egg bite to eat there, which comes in an adorable egg carton-esque holder with a petite compostable wooden (bamboo?) fork. Their bags are a satisfyingly old-fashioned dark wax paper with her groovy logo on it. I also got a small americano with almond syrup and a splash of soy milk. I love the opportunities I get to take out from this place, but when I take the extra time to sit at the counter facing out the window onto Pike street and get to chat with the owner and staff about this and that, the whole experience makes me feel like I'm both on the Capitol Hill of my 80s youth, but also maybe someplace in Europe. Five stars alone for the bananas foster donut bomb. That was simply put one of the best donuts I've ever had! And that says quite a lot coming from someone who does not like filled donuts! I also loved the chai old fashioned donut despite not usually loving cakey donuts. This place made me a believer! They unfortunately didn't have several of the doughnuts that we went there for and the Sunday special - pineapple candied bacon fritter - but we left with some good options. The pineapple fritter was certainly different, as was the blueberry one. I'm used to apple fritters so these were a welcomed change from the classic fritter. I visited Half n Half donuts while visiting Seattle and cannot recommend their old fashion donuts enough. Delicious, light and fresh, they are served up by a lovely lady who owns the shop. I noticed their connection to Hawaii as they make mochi bite donut holes among other Hawaiian/Japanese treats in addition to the more traditional ring and old fashioned cake donuts. Super warm and nice folks working there and can definitely recommend stopping in for a donut and coffee if you're in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Lovely spot. read more

Partner brought home the banana fosters bismark for me, I haven't been eating much sugar and I should have only eaten half, it was so sweeeeeet (If I hadn't been on my "limited" sugar I think it would have been totally fine). No words do this place justice. To call it a donut shop is a misnomer. The lady that owns it deserves recognition far beyond just being a great donut shop owner. I once overheard her discussing how she traveled to the depths of India to acquire a special kind of tea just to create a new flavor of pastry. While I still am a Philistine and go for the obvious choice of the bananas foster bismarck, which by the way, is for the hater of banana flavored things, i've yet to try a pastry from this place that is not magical. If there is such a thing as culinary anointing, it is on this place. The folks at the front are exceptional baristas, give exceptional customer service, and if you're hungry for something savory, their sandwiches are to die for. This place has been on my list for awhile. I used to swing by Tempesta on the way to work when I wanted to bring a treat for some of the admin staff sadly they closed during covid. I went around 6am on the way into work last Friday from a sleep study. Probably a little too earlier case the case didn't have any cronuts yet or minis. The peeps at work I gave the Bombs to gave them a big thumbs up. Funny thing I didn't have a doughnut that day I went with their breakfast sandwich per a friend's suggestion and I'm more of a savory person in the morning. I did have a Georgette Cinnamon Twist that I split with dad the next day. But to me doughnuts are always best on the day you get them. Know what that means? I have to make a return trip one day. Loved how the shop was decorate. Can't wait to try their old fashioneds and cronuts. I like that they offer mini options cause sometimes that's what you want instead of an entire doughnut. Or the chance yo try more flavors. The people at work really loved the bomb flavors and said the texture of the doughnut was nice. The Georgette held up well the next day definitely had lots of sugar cinnamon. The breakfast sammie was tasty I should've probably ate it there instead of waiting to eat it after my street car trek back to the office cause I know it would've been even better. They're overall okay - I like the mochi best. Amply filled - if filling is what you crave then you won't be disappointed. I would purchase again if I happen to be in the area but I wouldn't go out of way for them. There are just too many other doughnut spots that taste better IMO, and that are also way cheaper, way closer, and have parking.
