In an unassuming strip mall, lies a little gem of an Indian restaurant. There's a buffet every day, which is absolutely worth the visit alone. Their regular menu also looked incredible, with plenty of variety for all different types of diets. The buffet had butter chicken, which was meltingly tender, a dal dish that had hints of onion and clove in the aromatics, paneer with green peas in a chunky curry sauce, goat curry and chicken curry. However, the lamb kadau was too many bones and fatty cut of meat. The flavor of sauce was excellent and would order it with chicken next time or just order vegetarian. To start with, I knew this restaurant had good food, but didn't know they were too good for catering. While I was shopping for good catering/food for my party, I was recommended this place hands down by my friends. This is when I went to see Deepak, the owner of Haldi Chowk at Middletown, NJ. Deepak was friendly, while taking our inputs, he politely recommended what's best given our requirements. He treated us like a family member and provided us the best price while tweaking the items per our requirements. He provided competitve pricing and offered catering to us more than what we wished for. There was no bargaining required. He communicated frequent enough throughout the time to ensure there are no loose ends. He sounded like a man who keeps his words, quality, service and satisfaction no matter what. At one point I wanted to add extra apetizers, to which he ensured what he planned is good enough and do necessary adjustments within that. I didn't need to add extra food. Come the day of event, he showed up on time with one of the best helper he had. He came himself as one of his crew member was not available. They not only took care of setting up in grand fashion what they brought, but also set up what I brought from outside for the party. While I didn't count on him for that, he took best decisions to set those things up to to make event look the best. He was on his toes with his crew all the time and made sure he is keeping the food covered, warm, stirred from time to time while also managing non-catered food. He made event look like his own and mingled with the family as if he is part of family/hosts. They didn't rest or eat at all for close to 5 hrs onsite! They made sure area is clean at all times! Once the event was over, him and crew helped pack left overs for the family and guests. He left the area in pristine clean condition. Everyone who visited enjoyed the food and catering. Lot of people already knew him and felt great that I had him for my catering food... As he is the best! I strongly recommend Haldi Chowk and Deepak hands down for catering needs! The restaurant serves authentic Indian cuisine and you can obviously convey the level of spice you would like your dish to be served. I would recommend folks to try out Goat pepper masala and Mutter mushroom (green pea and mushroom) along with Indian bread. Fantastic combination. Terrible customer service. We ordered delivery. We had to call twice to ask where our food was as it was considerably late. We were told they have a new delivery driver and she made a mistake in the order in which she was delivering food. No apologies and we were just expected to deal with it. I expressed my disappointment and told the manager that I am unlikely to order from them again given this negative experience. The manager asked if I wanted to be compensated for my trouble and I said yes - figuring maybe they would refund some of our order, give us a credit or something. Haldi, means turmeric, and chowk means corner. So I like the name, as most North Indian food has turmeric as the base ingredient in it. So good job with the name. My wife and I first foray into Indian cuisine in at least 15 years. We were simply tired of the same old stuff. Before the food I have to mention the service, the manager franky was phenomenal. Helpful friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered the veggie samosa, which were delicious, a little bit of spice, soft potato filling and a crunchy outer layer. For the main course we had chicken korma. So aromatic creamy and fresh, a delight to our bored tastebuds. Haldi Chowk is one of the greatest Indian restaurants outside of Oak Tree Road in Edison. I'd just like to echo the other sentiments already posted here on yelp that they offer an excellent lunch buffet. You're given the opportunity to try dishes you may be unfamiliar with and discover new tastes you didn't know existed. My personal favorite things here were the garlic naan, their chicken 65, and their butter chicken. So on my second visit they were not out of anything that should have been in the spread. I also liked that the warming trays were continually replenished during the meal. The service was excellent, and the staff is genuinely friendly and aims to please. However, I can't say that any of the dishes really blew me away. In fact several were under-spiced to my liking.
