When I pass this place, I can always smell it in the air! It always makes me so hungry! I got the Number 10 (Gyro Wrap), and Every single bite was freaking delicious. It kinda fell apart as I ate, but he hooked it up! So what do you really expect when you put all those goodies all in a lil Pita Bread wrap. Consider me grateful for having this as an option in South Austin. Every time I come here I am happy with the food and pleased with the prompt & friendly service. I came here a month ago and fell in love. I ordered fries with all the sauces. I got a glorious tray of fries that had so much sauce I had to eat it with a fork. It was delicious. I found this food truck again yesterday to my great excitement. I stepped up and ordered two of the fries with lots of sauce. The man running the window stated that the fries has no sauce. I looked at him in confusion. Was this the wrong food truck?? I looked at the menu and the picture of their fries is covered in two sauces. I pointed at the menu and stated that the menu shows sauce. He shook his head and stated their fries don't have sauce on them. So I figured maybe they were out of the sauce? He shook his head and stated he could put some sauce on my fries. I just kept looking at their menu with the fries covered in sauce and remembered my last visit. I nodded and asked for lots of sauce please. He rolled his eyes and quoted me 10 minutes. When I got to work there was a single sample cup of sauce in my bag. (I ordered 2 fries!) The fries themselves were cold. (I only work 15 min away and they went into a food bag in my car.) And finally, the Dolmas I ordered were frozen! A month ago this was a five star food truck. Today they are a waste of money. I'm seriously sad! read more

I am writing this 3-star review only from a vegetarian's point of view. I wasn't a fan of the falafels - they weren't the fresh and fluffy kind I like. The baklava barely had any stuffing. The hummus was a small portion for the price though delicious and the white sauce/red sauce were the highlights. Second visit update: my husband got a double meat chicken rice plate and really enjoyed his meal. So no doubt, they do well on what they do well. read more

Took me long enough to get here, but finally got to try the gurus. I think of all the halal carts in Austin, they definitely have the richest tasting rice as it has almost a buttery flavor to it. That said, it does make the meal heavier than one would expect. The gyro meat over rice is a good size portion that will make you full, with nice crisped gyro meat pieces. White sauce is a must and the red sauce, while hot, won't blow your face off. All in all it makes for a very enjoyable meal. My sister got the falafel and she said it wasn't dry, which given the scope of falafel at other places she's had in town, is a pretty big vouch for this shop. Price wise is about what I'm used to paying for this kinda food. If you're in the area, give it a try. read more

The Gurus as we call them. This restaurant is probably the most talked about in my household. We rant and rave about the awesome halal food served in a Texaco parking lot. We love ordering online through Yelp/grub hub and swinging by The Halal Gurus on our way home from work... but only when they have Lamb Shawarma. That stuff is some of the best! I love the shawarma plates and gyros. The only thing I wish was a bit better is the hummus but I can find that somewhere else. Thank Gurus! read more

Service: 5/5 I don't know how they do it, but Halal Gurus may just be the fastest food truck in the city. We always have our food within 5 minutes of ordering. We ordered delivery from here, and all the meals arrived neatly packaged. I had the Combination Chicken and Gyro Over Rice Plate, which was flavored and portioned well. I loved the simple salad that it came with. Overall, it wasn't especially remarkable compared to other halal food I've had, but I've never had bad halal food, so it hit the spot. Every single time I go here- I am left with awe. The combo plate is exceptional. The rice is well cooked and flavorful, the gyro and chicken is also equally amazing and flavorful. If you think this is good, just wait till you mix it with their white sauce!! Too much of their red sauce is a bit too spicy for me but just a little would hit that needed tang. When my family and I craved Mediterranean food this was my go-to place. Today when I brought the food home, things were surprisingly different. And surprisingly different doesn't mean they have done extremely well, but the opposite. Beef Shawarma wrap had allmost 80% salad and 20% beef. Taste wasn't the same either. Not sure if this business have been bought out or what. Type of beef shawarma they have now is totally worth $6.99 and not a penny more. Charging $9.99 is absurd when they are actually selling you a Salad Shawarma with a hint of beef. Was so hungry that I forgot to take picture of Beef Shawarma, but snapped pic of Gyro wrap. Searching through an online delivery list of restaurants, I happened upon the Halal Gurus. Their menu looked good, and I settled on the Chicken Shawarma Over Rice - Marinated chicken breast cooked to perfection over spiced basmati rice with a side salad. I figured for $10 for the meal would be a light dinner, so I opted to order some french fries and hummus with pita. To say I ordered too much food would be an understatement. Living in Austin, $10 doesn't go that far and rarely gets you more than a burger. The Chicken Shawarma plate alone was plenty of food and well worth way more than I paid. It tasted great, was well seasoned, with flavorful rice, and still hot when it arrived. Even the french fries were prepared perfectly and were also warm upon delivery. The hummus was ok, not my favorite, but still good. I've been trying hard to experience new foods past my norm. Photography on the delivery site did the Halal Gurus' food justice and helped entice me to order. The food spoke for itself, and when it hit my mouth, it shouted! Its a love/hate relationship i have going on with Halal Gurus...but obviously i continue to stick around enduring the abuse of having to wait in line and then wait wait wait for the food to be served. I have to say we ordered the chicken shawarma with rice and if was incredible the rice was fragrant and the chicken had been clearly marinated for hours or possible days. Typically the rice from places like this doesn't have seasoning but this rice was fragrant and you could pick up hints of saffron and salt. Delicious hidden gem. Love the kind of pitas they use, so there's that. And the salad ingredients with the Salad over combo meat were fresh and crisp. But the gyro isn't sliced, it's minced. The chicken at least was bite sized-ish. The tabouli was okay, because parsley. The hummus had little flavor, and the the Baba Ghanouj had none at all. The falafel was so peppery there was no other taste.. If it wasn't bland, it was peppery. We ordered a variety of things intended to graze off them for a day or so. I absolutely love this place. My husband and I have eaten almost everything on the menu, because it's our favorite to-go Mediterranean spot. Our favorites are: The kibbi, the gyro wrap, the chicken shawarma plate, the falafel, and extra sides of pita and hummus. DO NOT FORGET THE EXTRA PITA, or you will cry. Also, their red sauce is so damn delicious and addicting! My husband cannot tolerate spicy food, but he loves the flavor of this red sauce so much, he sucks it up anyway and loads it on his food from here. Visiting Austin from Seattle after a brief trip to Anchorage the prior week. Due to cold and ice, flights were cancelled in and out of AUSand I landed up staying over the weekend. As for The Halal Gurus, I ordered a Gyro and Falafel Wrap. It's the best wrap (gyro) that I've ever had and I've had well over 20 in my lifetime. Not quite expert, but enough to know what is good. If you visit Austin and want something other than tex-mex, BBQ, burgers, etc, I recommend Halal Gurus. The lamb and falafel were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pita soft and fresh. It came with a red sauce and a ranch-type sauce. Both were awesome and just enough for a wrap. Last thing, call Liz at Alaskan Husky Adventures if you want the best dog mushing tour in Anchorage. read more
