And the lower price range can only be found on the occasional sale day. Whereas, Viva's prices are on regular rotation ranging from .79c/lb -$1.99/lb. How are they able to maintain these lower prices? Supply and demand? Better wholesale distributor? Location? They're located in Westchester and less than half a mile or so from Shop Rite and Stop Shop, and the quality to me seems on par with the larger chains. Hey, but what do I know? One thing I do know, these affordable prices are being trickled down to the consumer for a change and that's more than appreciated. Viva Ranch carries all your favorite veggies and fruits, even stuff you didn't even think you needed. Plus, there's also a friendly butchers corner towards the back of the store. Showing my patronage whenever I can helps Viva turn their products over and on the other hand saves me a few dollars. And who doesn't value saving a few $'s? Here's everything I picked up today: 2 extra large cucumbers, a 2 lb bag of yellow onions & red onions, a pint of cherry tomatoes, fresh peeled garlic (a small container), 3 extra large heads of lettuce, 5 plums & 2 containers of very large strawberries & a package of soup greens which includes all that is needed for chicken soup which I'll be making this week (radishes, parsley, carrots, parsnips etc) guess my total... $20.01. 20 bucks and I'm set for the whole week.. if I bought all of that at stop and shop or shoprite, I would have gotten less for more money. The quality of their products are amazing too and the staff is super friendly. The store itself can get a bit crowded & parking is not the best but I don't mind since the prices are so great. They have another location which is much larger and has a lot more to offer but if you're looking for just produce and some meat, this spot is perfect!

The veggies are fresh and fairly priced. There's also a really large selection of niche products that seem to skew towards Filipino cuisine, including fresh pastries and baked items. They also bring in dim sum on weekend mornings from the city -- the best stuff goes quickly. The Hmart down the street is often a little chaotic for me, so I'm glad this exists as an alternative!

On days I don't bring lunch to work, I get an eggplant sandwich with lettuce/tomatoes or go for the eggplant on mixed greens with other veggies- that are both winners for me. The store seems to be focusing more on expensive organic products, but unfortunately the quality control on some of the cheeses has gone down. I've purchased several cheeses here recently that tasted over-aged and strongly ammoniated. Properly aged European cheeses should have complex, nutty, earthy flavors -- not a harsh ammonia taste or smell. This has happened multiple times now. One of the biggest issues is that everything is prepackaged in plastic, so you cannot properly smell or assess the cheese before buying it. You only discover the problem once you get home and open the package. A good cheese counter should allow customers to smell or sample cheeses, especially imported and aged varieties.
