I've been meaning to get a haircut the past year or so as I was long overdue for one. I was looking at the Square Go App and Hairplay by RUMI came up, so I did some Googling and found this Yelp page. New-ish spot locally by me? That's a win! There was availability on the app that fit my schedule, so I booked. I got a text from RUMI re getting to the salon and instructions as it can be a bit difficult to find. Very helpful! I arrived, and Rumi was super nice, warming, made me feel at ease. It's a small studio room so it's most likely just the customer there being worked on. It wasn't one of those fancy city studios or those huge salon suite places. It felt quite homey, in a great way. I explained my hair situation and how I wanted to cut quite a bit off for my hair to look healthier, and asked Rumi for some of her opinions and expertise. Ended up getting around a foot of hair cut off, some face framing layers. It was amazing! She washed my hair, cut, blow dry. Rumi also does henna, and we talked about that for a bit since I wasn't sure if that would show on my hair, so maybe some day I'll try coloring via that route. My daughter wanted to get her hair cut for quite some time too, and she approved of mom's haircut, so I made an appointment for her to get her hair cut by Rumi the following week. She wanted side bangs, but her hair wouldn't naturally part that way, and she's low maintenance (similar to me), so Rumi suggested curtain bangs, and she went with that. She's gotten so many compliments from her friends and other family members re her haircut. I don't get my hair cut often, but now I know where to go - super convenient, and Rumi is purely an amazing person! My daughter said the same, and another perk was there were some sweets she couldn't resist after her haircut. :) read more

I've been getting my haircut by Rumi for quite a while now before she opened her new studio, and I can whole heartedly recommend her to anyone. Rumi listens to what you want and does it perfectly, although she usually chimes in with her own artistic vision. And honestly, you have to trust her on it because she keeps executing so well every time. I personally tend to go for a mid/high fade and I can say without a doubt that her haircuts are on par with other barber shops I've been to, yet her men's haircuts are much more affordable. RUMI has been cutting mine and my husband's hair since she opened her cute little studio. She takes her time and both of us are very happy with our haircuts. While I appreciate the incredibly fast response, they are a bit far from me (Vallejo), but if their response time is any indication to the care and professionalism you'll receive as a client? I had my first haircut with Rumi and it was an amazing experience in every way. Rumi was so warm and welcoming, putting me at ease immediately. She really listened to my preferences for the haircut and checked in with me along the way. She is very knowledgeable and skilled and you can really tell that she loves working with hair. She listened to what I wanted, took a good, long, careful look at my hair, and then gave me a wonderful haircut, and with a few tweaks was exactly what I wanted. Rumi is exceptional. I have (had) long straight hair for years, simply because that is the easiest to maintain. I decided I needed to do something a little different (not radical) and still simple to maintain. Big, swanky hair salons aren't me - I wanted something personal and simple, while still offering a stylist with vision. Yes, a tall order. I was thrilled to find Hairplay by RUMI on yelp - it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for! In fact, it was even better than I could have hoped for. I had no photos of what I wanted; I wanted to leave it in the hands of the professional. (That has backfired on me in the past, but hope springs eternal.) Rumi quickly assessed me, my lifestyle and time I would likely spend on styling (minimal at best). She suggested much shorter (5-6" off), long layering and face framing. After a relaxing wash and head massage, she went to work. I could not BELIEVE how she transformed my look, while keeping things simple for me (maintenance-wise). Suddenly, my hair looked bouncy and vibrant ... making ME feel bouncy and vibrant. Rumi has a real gift, and I am so grateful to have found her here on Yelp. I came across Hairplay by RUMI on a whim. Needed a new year hair refresh and just decided to book an appointment for a haircut service (which was at a promotional price of 50% off her standard haircut rate). I had low expectations because I only get my haircute 1-2x/yr max and my hair cut isn't too complicated (trim 5ish inches, long layers, face- framing, and thinning/texturizing) I have very thick, coarse, wavy black hair down to about my waist. First off her space is nice, private, easy parking (utilizing her reserved spot), clean, inviting, warm, and she was very friendly and easy to chat with. She was considerate, gentle, and actually really impressed me with her skill set. You can tell how passionate she is about her work and her clients. She offered to blow out my hair which was not included in the service, so I really felt like she went above and beyond. My hair was beautiful and exactly as I waned. I know she's trying to build clientele, as shes new to the Lafayette area-- if you're looking for someone, I'd definitely recomment Rumi and will most certainly see her again. read more
