Hair Innovations is a hidden gem in the salon world in Honolulu. Located along Kapiolani Blvd., just beyond Ala Moana Center, is a small salon up on the second floor of a commerical building. The salon, which only has two chairs is probably the smallest salon I've ever been to, but believe me, magic happens every time I get my haircut from Terry Teranishi, or what I refer to him as, "the miracle worker."
Originally from Sapporo, Japan, Terry is a master of hair with nearly 50 years in the business. He cut my mom's hair when she was in high school, to which she says was the best haircut she had ever received. (and she's been in the beauty industry for 30 some years herself) My mom noted that Terry knows 'how to cut hair.' With that kind of backing, how could I not book an appointment. Today, Terry cuts my hair as well as my dad's.
My hair is probably the most difficult kind of hair to work with. Believe me, every stylists I've ever had since puberty has told me. My hair is for one, THICK, and is perfectly accented with difficult waves, and sporadic curls. And I'm pure Japanese....allegedly. lol When Terry first cut my hair, he told me that in all his years, one client had the hardest hair, but my hair quickly took the title just upon him running his hands through my locked-up locks. I'm honored, really!
So, to combat my hair, Terry approaches it differently from any stylist I've had prior. He dry-cuts my hair for instant gratification (as Tabatha Coffee calls it) and tries to cut the waves out using precision Japanese scissors and other magnificent techniques. Then after that, he thins it with sheering scissors to take the bulk out, then rinses, then continues to cut. It's quite remarkable to watch. I always watch stylists cut, but there is nothing more captivating than watching Terry work his magic.
My haircuts at high-end salons run about $50+ for a standard men's haircut, but with Terry, the price is nearly half of what I usually pay, and the haircut itself is so much better. I always feel like a million bucks every time I get out from Hair Innovations. Definitely a hidden wonder of the hair world. If you're looking for a new stylist, give Terry a call! read more
