There is a barber named Randy here who will do a good $5 cleanup of the neck and edges. His chair is the first one on the left as you enter, right by the door. I've never had a wait going here, but they do a decent haircut for the price. Parking can be tricky because this place is in the heart of Oakland's bustling Chinatown. I usually park a few blocks eastward. As long as Laney college doesn't have classes in session, I can usually find a space without an issue. I've been going to Chinatown for haircuts for as long as I can remember (at least 10 years!). My mother brought me out here as a kid for the inexpensive haircuts and I still come out for the same reason. While a "salon" experience is fun, I'm really just looking for a cheap and fast place to get a quality haircut. And you get that here! I've always patronized TOMMY (he's from HK, talks a mile a minute, and seems to be the most popular one there - not the bald or permed dude). He gives my straight Asian hair wispy layers that frames my round face in a flattering way. Even with my coarse but thin hair, it always looks like i have some volume up top (although I sometimes have to remind him to go easy with the shortest layers or else my hair sticks up a bit). Basically he's great at giving you layers that make your hair feel lighter w/o compromising length or ability to put up in a ponytail. This is great for me because I want to continue growing out my hair but would like frequent trims to maintain my dry and split ends. There's no pressure do add extra services. I've been to places that really push you to get your hair colored, permed, deep conditioned, etc. and I know they're just trying to get you to pay more. When I'm here, I get my hair cut plus some funny conversation and that's about it! Tommy *does* offer hair care advice; he knows I like to dye my own hair at home and he recommends me to do my roots first and then rub the dye into the ends 5-10 mins before the expected finishing time to even out my hair and protect its health. No pushiness here! I always pay $20 total (including tip) so this is a great deal for a haircut. Hints: - Weekends get busy so you should drop in to say you want a hair cut and then you can go run errands/shop in Chinatown while you wait. - Tommy is off Tuesdays. read more

Thi is a place that you can not judge it by its looks. It's the opposite of fancy. Henry did and outstanding job with my hair. I like it short and have some cowlicks. Henry uses angle cuts to remove length so it blends and layers nicely as the hair grows out. Instead of cross cut that most places use the fix it by thinning shears. It may not look cleanest however they are using the correct sanitation procedures. My X when was a hairdresser so I have some experience. If your afraid of going to a Chinese salon don't be. I've been here twice and absolutely loved my haircuts here. I usually go to Shear Image in San Francisco but mi novia recommended me to this place, it was worth the drive. I have been to many salons and barbers. Some costs 10 bucks and others have cost me 30+. This place is definitely a bang for the buck. First off, my hair is thick and wavy. Secondly, my head is shaped a bit weird. This place managed to cut my hair perfectly with a cool style. They were able to communicate with me about how I want my hair style to be and they did exactly what I told them to do. I came in for a haircut today without an appointment and was helped by Vincent. I had recently gone to two other salons for a color touch up in which both other salons did not capture the color I was looking for. I thought I would give Hair Image salon a chance, normally I go to Kim, but she was not in today. After showing Vincent pictures of the ideal color I was looking for, he was able to pinpoint my hair color selection with just one attempt. I am extremely satisfied with the quality of hair color provided by hair stylist Vincent , he has many many years of experience and I am glad I chose him for correcting my hair coloring needs. He was very meticulous, detailed, and thoughtful when it came to the coloring process of my hair. Vincent is a truly skilled and professional hairstylist. I highly recommend Vincent and Kim. I no longer have to search for other haircoloring stylists. I live in the south bay and will definitely return to hair image in Oakland for hair cuts and coloring services by Vincent and Kim. Affordable and they did a great job on my cut, color and highlight. It's in chinatown, so parking can be a b*%#*, so be prepared to pay for it or just get dropped off. Randy is my man, his station is on the left by the window as you walk in. the place is not so high on the cleanliness as there was hair everywhere but the quality of my haircut and color makes up for it. He is very particular and meticulous with the cut and my color looks awesome. I got brown color w/blonde highlights. Everything was fine at first but I have to take off a star. When I came there the 3rd time, they lowered my cost to $75 from 80-85. I figured it was cuz he knew i would be coming back on the regular after that. You'd think as a regular i would get special tmt. Usually it takes about 3 hours to get my hair colored, cut and highlighted (that's with any salon) but there were at least 2, may 3 times where it took longer! How long could I possibly wait? 3 hours is grueling enough! Anyway, lately it has been taking longer... mainly due in part to the other customers that he tends to at the same time... For instance, while i'm under the dryer, or while the color is setting, he will work on someone else. Well, that's all good and fine... i mean it is a cheap shop but this last time was the last straw. I had the color in my hair for OVER AN HOUR and it fried my scalp. Homeboy Randy had the nerve to work on a PERM while i was wtg on the color. In total I was in the shop for over 4 hours. I did not think it was too bad until later in the day when my head was still itchy and burning. I had gone there last friday. I've been here at least 3 times, so every time I come here for a hair cut, I am confident that I will leave with some very happy hair. I never ask for a specific stylist, but each time, I get the same guy, and I'm always glad I do! Well, of course, it might have to do with the fact that maybe I walk toward him when I come in asking for a hair cut. No appointments necessary, but last time I had to wait a bit (for my stylist, of course!--he's the one with short hair, not the one with shoulder-length permed hair). He is very good at interpreting what type of cut I want. I suppose I'm picky about my hair so I go into details, but my hair always comes out the way I want, sometimes better. For some reason, I always start off speaking in Cantonese to him and somehow we gradually start speaking English (he probably realizes that my Canto is terrible and hence, tries to save me from embarrassment... sigh). The last time I came here for a hair cut, it was to save my hair. I used to have long, beautiful hair. Unfortunately, when I let it grow that long, I get split ends, so I decided to get a trim... And then I decided I wanted something new and opted for a medium length bob. I made the mistake of asking my mom to cut my hair, so it turned out terrible (I love her, but hair cuts are not her forte). The next day, I came here, and my stylist (maybe I should try to remember his name next time...) saved my hair--from a blunt, messy cut to a smooth and silky bob. Also, my hair cuts tend to always cost around $20, which isn't bad at all, considering I have a lot of hair to work with (I like my hair thinned, so that requires a bit extra work). I am a big fan of Henry. He is awesome and the work is consistently excellent. My coworkers always notice a difference when someone else cuts my hair. It's just not the same. Henry RULES!! I just wish i could relocate the salon to San Mateo, for selfish reason of course. It's always busy but the wait time varies. you will never be confused that you were in a she-she salon, as this place is a small step above typical Chinatown fare in terms of ambiance/cleanliness, friendliness. Most of the stylists speak English well. the Price cannot be beat, $15 for a cut. I have a little test on the care.quality of the cut.....Supercuts will trim one or two layers at the base of your hairline. ...Hair Image used 4-5 layers....one layer shorter/closer than the other. I've been coming here for at least 20 yrs. The 2015 price is $21 for a wash, cut & blow. All the guys are brothers...Randy & his wife, Henry, Vincent (Curlie top) & Tommy. I've had cuts from all except Randy & his wife. They are all artists. They give a good cut. Henry's my main guy only cuz I like his BS. I've gone to this salon for haircuts and highlights for at least three times, and I am pretty satisfied. You don't need an appointment to come, and the wait is not too long. The price for a haircut is decent, and I have liked most of my haircuts from here. The most I have been charged is $18, but the price is usually around $15. I have learned the different styles of a few stylists. If you are a male who wants a haircut or a female who wants thinned out layers, Vincent (the one with curly, longish hair) is a good stylist for you. If you want an edgier haircut with a lot of layers, Tommy (the one with dyed brown/orange hair and glasses) does this very well. If you want a simple haircut with a few layers and light bangs, the woman hair cutter (I don't know her name) usually cuts hair this way. Vincent usually cuts hair for men, the woman usually cuts hair for women, and both men and women want Tommy to cut their hair. I haven't gotten haircuts from anyone else besides these, but all of the hair cutters seem great. I like to get my hair cut by Tommy, but there are usually a couple of people already waiting for him, or he is busy. I have seen people of all ages come here, from young children to elderly people. Overall, I think Hair Image is a great place for people of all ages. The haircuts and prices are both good. read more

Can't believe I can find a review for a chinatown hair salon! $16 for cut and blow dry, $20 for a shampoo+cut+dry. Brought a picture of the style I want, and it came out okay. Don't know what the guy's name was but he did a terrible job at cutting my hair. To be precise, he didn't CUT any hair, he just thinned them out. WTF!! I told this guy not to thin out my hair and instead cut it a little shorter than what it already is. Simple right?? Nope! This guy still thinned it out!! even worse was he refused to shorten my bangs when I asked him to because in his "opinion" it would like bad. My hair looks like freaking trimmed grass! Salon's are to cut hair not grass!! Avoid this place at all times!!! I'm driving back to San Jose for my haircut from now on, it's a hell of a drive but from what i've seen today, it's worth it. read more
