OMG SO SO SO DISAPPOINTED!!! I came in here for an updo for a wedding and had made an appointment weeks in advance with a stylist. I arrived and was told that the stylist I had scheduled with was with someone else and I could wait or be seen with another stylist. In the interest of time, I showed the other stylist the pictures of what I wanted and was told by her that she could do it. Unfortunately for me, she could NOT. The worst part is they had the AUDACITY to charge me $70 for a hairstyle that looks HORRIBLE. Literally . Mind you, updo's start at $55 and even after they saw how terrible my hair looked, they STILL charged me $70. Do yourself a favor and do NOT go here. I will definitely never be going back again. They should be embarrassed. I sure as sh*t know I am. Now I have to wash my hair and blow dry it myself. What a waste of time and money. My goodness!!! I love this place! I never go anywhere else. It is in right by my house, and there is a big parking too. Sometimes I go there before/after work since it is next to Jefferson Park Bus terminal and Blue Line. Chris usually cuts my hair, but other girls are good too. Place is clean, people are super nice and usually I don't have to wait long time to get a service (for cut and style you don't need an appointment). I had some unexpected free time on a Monday and they were able to take me in with little to no notice. Once I arrived I only planned on getting a haircut but I showed her a photo of a balayage and asked her for a quick consult. Once she showed me pictures of her work, I was eager to get it done. Mind you, they closed at 6 and I arrived around 4:30. I told her my schedule was very tight and I'm unsure when I'll be able to come back for the balayage but with a quick look at the time, Marcela was up for the challenge. I told her nightmare stories of how past hairdressers have treated my hair with balayage requests and she made me feel really comfortable with the process. She explained it to me in clear detail. She even sat down and looked through the different toner options with me. She is a breath of fresh air and I am so glad I ran into her at the salon today, this will definitely be my go to salon and my go to girl for my hair! Love herrrr and the work that she does!! She was so quick. she treated my hair, cut, blow dried, AAAANNDD styled it in maybe a littttllleee over 2 hrs? Crazy!! I love this place. This is my second appointment here and I've enjoyed the service both times. I was in mourning for my salon up north but after moving to Chicago, I had to give up my old ways. I came in for a simple color the first time. It was kind of on a whim on my way home from work, when I passed by the shop right next to the Jeff Park transportation center. They could take me right away as a walk-in - great! They listened to my color choices and made good recommendations - even better! My second visit I had Christy do highlights and a cut. At first I was a little surprised at how quiet she was. I'm definitely used to getting to know my stylist and chit-chatting while I'm in the chair. But then I realized how relaxing it was to just be cared for and not have to even make the effort of talking. In my very plugged-in, go-go world, this was wonderful once I settled in. She cut my hair just the way I wanted it, and the highlights look great. She did a good brow waxing job too, and it was all done in a reasonable amount of time. I'd say prices are pretty market-appropriate - this place is not a bargain. The only thing I'd change is that I wish the decor was a little updated and more spa-like. This place is clean and tidy, but it definitely has a barbershop vibe. read more

It is a pretty typical neighborhood place, and I can't say anything negative about the nice employee's attitudes, but I won't ever go back. I've had free haircuts from military barbers that are better than what I walked out with. A simple fade on a guy shouldn't be a hard style, but she didn't seem to understand how to blend the hair -- and the lining around my head wasn't even close to straight. Additionally, the half inch I requested off the top turned into over an inch off. I would've said something right away, but my back was to the mirror and it was too late by the time i saw. Rather than let her put clippers to my head again I went home and fixed it the best that I could. Thankfully hair grows back. The place gets a second star for, at the very minimum, having nice employees. If you're a guy looking for any cut requiring clippers, I'd avoid this place. read more

Krys and Endi are the best. You have to request them. Have seen a couple of sketch cuts or less than happy clients from the others- but these two ladies have given me great results time after time. Take time to listen to wHat you want and will make sure everyone is on the same page before undertaking a cut. This place is a hidden gem. I've tried several mid to high end salons all over Chicago (from Logan Square to the Gold Coast) and haven't really loved my hair cut/style. After throwing upwards of $125 on a single visit (NOT including any kind of color - I don't dye my hair), I was tired of spending that much on 'meh' results. I've gone to Jasmine at Hair Express a few times now and have left totally thrilled with her work. She listens to what I want. I've asked her for trendier, more modern styles and she's delivered each time. Sure, this place won't offer you complimentary champagne or cucumber water like other luxury salons, but they'll do a really nice job on your hair. They run efficiently too, which is nice for those days when I just want to get in and out. Chris also does a great job on eyebrows. She cleaned me up really nicely and did not over wax! read more

OPEN SUNDAYS! To find someone to style your hair for an event on a Sunday is very difficult, as most salons are closed. Have only been there for one updo (done by Kristina), and loved it. Loved the products she used for my curly updo, and it held up all day (in a blizzard!!). Stylist was a great listener, patient, and her own ideas for style made it even better than what I had in mind. My girlfriend used another stylist and was happy as well. Very reasonably priced. I have been coming here on and off ever since I was a teenager and it has been a few years since I was last here. I came in today for a haircut and Angela was amazing! My hair was pretty long, down to my elbows and I told her I wanted something different, so I told her something like a shoulder length angled bob. She was very attentive and took the time to cut off little by little to make sure I was okay with the length of my new haircut. The staff here are so sweet! Ivana was especially helpful and patient with me as I expressed my concerns and questions with the length and upkeep of my hair. She was always willing to help me visualize what a certain cut would look like before the scissors did its thing. She was also mindful of whether or not I could see my hair in the mirror given that I am nearsighted and wore glasses. With damaged ends, she also took the time to snip off as many as she could find. I have been going here for decades (it was formally known as We Care Hair). Annette was my hair stylist for years (she recently left). I went to this salon 2 days ago for a trim (my bangs were long) and to have split ends cut off my length. While I was getting my hair cut, a gentleman walked in and asked "How much for a haircut?". A different beautician than the one I had replied "$15.00". The man said "Ok, i'll wait". My cut was completed in about 15 minutes. I was charged $25.00 for my trim. Having just joined Yelp, I wanted to make sure was the first review I write. I've been going to Hair Express for about two years now and it's like my second home. I see Erie and Chris ususally and they are by far the best stylists I've ever had. When I started going there my hair was so 'blah' and now it's as healthy as it has ever been and I get complements on the color all the time. Hair Express always has a new hair style, product or color to try. The salon itself is fun to go to. The customer-service is very friendly. The one thing I like the best is that the salon strives to be as eco-friendly as possible with their products, tools, cleaning products, etc. I would definitely recommend you book an appointment. I don't have a lot of hair, but almost every time I've had what little I have cut, they've done a very nice job. The salon is clean, the stylists are friendly and they offer a wide variety of magazines to peruse during what are usually very short waits. They have convenient hours, are open on Sunday and offer free parking. They have competitive prices. The reason I'm giving only four stars is because like any salon, stylist turnover happens, and I have had "new employees" there give me a few haircuts that I was not thrilled about. Nevertheless, my years of overall experiences there have been very good, so I am a regular customer, and plan to continue patronizing Hair Express. read more
