I've been going to Vivian for years and had a couple bad haircuts, but she fixed them. The last time she cut my hair I didn't realized how messed up my hair was until I washed it and curled it. Hair was so uneven and short in some spots and longer in others. I always asked that she cut my hair leaving the top longer than the sides and my hair on top was the same length as my sides. The back was really short in spots that when I curled my hair it was popping out and I constantly had to curl on part and curl the other which made me work harder and takes longer. One might ask why I didn't go back to her, honestly it was the worse cut she provided on my head, and I would not give her the satisfaction to touch my hair ever again. I started to schedule an appointment with one of her co-workers so they could see how she is not consistent with doing hair and how uneven it was throughout my head. She wanted to go to Costco's and maybe that's where her head was. I don't not recommend Vivian in the Woodbridge Hair Cuttery located at Merchant Plaza. A very nice lady but will mess your hair up for sure. No matter how simple of a little snip you need don't do it!!! I went in for a literal trim not a haircut. I legit did need a trim my hair is kinda in a rough place, stress mostly. I asked just for my dead ends to be trimmed my hair was to the middle of my back I was ok with a couple inches if needed. Immediately the hairdresser felt the need to make me feel like shhhh by continuing to remind me "you don't have much hair" you should cut it to your shoulders it's better, I'm like no, mind you I'm in my 40s so I know I have curly hair, she goes on to "educate" me unsolicited about how I have curly hair hair I should use leave in condition mind you I had leave in conditioner in my hair when I went there, she washed my hair so she'd know that. Then I just said yeah stress ya know. She then goes on to lecture me about relaxing maybe doing yoga getting massages etc. MA'AM! I came here for a trim to literally improve my hair shuuuut up!! So she ended up cutting way more all the way just under my shoulders which whatever but that ish was so uneven I ended up having to ask my partner to even it out for me so it's even shorter now! Whatever it'll grow back but I've literally been fuming about this all week. Then in the salon it was chaos! Two women who look like twins or sisters at least were yelling back and forth to each other the yelling one apparently put foils in the others hair so had foils in her hair while she was doing someone's hair. Then the yelling one who was cutting someone's hair was bragging about how straight she cut the woman's hair! MISS! It's literally called Hair Cuttery it's literally what you're supposed to be good at. Nuts a nutty nutty experience! And honestly it's my own damn fault for not knowing better than going there. read more

I went on Sunday, August 8, 2021. For my first time ever getting my hair done professionally and paying someone to do it, I chose this Hair Cuttery location. I'm glad I did. Alanna was the stylist who took care of me on this visit. She was friendly and seemed to know exactly what she was doing and got an idea of what I wanted just from a general idea I had with some inspiration photos. It was a lovely experience. I paid for the wash, cut, and blow dry which came out to only $33 or so which I thought was definitely worth it (plus a tip which came out to $40). I moved to the NOVA / DMV area not too long ago from Seattle, so finding a new hair stylist was really tricky for me. After 4 months of researching, I found Mae on Instagram and fell in love with her work! What she was able to create with hair was almost identical to my previous hair stylist in Seattle. I booked the earliest appointment she had available and went in. I started off with dark brown hair (my natural hair color) and wanted something pretty light. I told Mae this didn't need to be a one session thing, that I could come back for 2 or 3 more sessions to get my hair to the end result I wanted. She was very knowledgeable about how she wanted to go about coloring my hair, she wanted to go as light as possible with damaging my hair which I appreciated. Mae absolutely KILLED it. I was very impressed with the end result just after one session AND she left my hair still feeling pretty soft. The first picture is what I wanted, the second was what I got.. and I think it's pretty similar for just the first session. Thank you Mae! Karen did my hair; it is patchy and uneven everywhere, ranging from orange to bright yellow from bleach. The whole purpose of the highlights was to cover my grays in the front, and they still look the same as when I went in. When I left my hair was still wet, as I was quoted it was extra to blow dry. I was sent a coupon to utilize this visit for 15% off the color, and she told me I could not use it. After paying $204, I would have imagined that my hair would look decent from a senior designer. I have been seeing Odaly at this location for over 10 years and she never fails to disappoint doing my hair. Today I went in for a color like I usually do and unfortunately there was an irate customer in the store who required a certain service that this Hair Cuttery does not offer and she kept insisting that they do the service and they kept trying to explain to her that don't offer that service. She was irate and disruptive, and the Hair Cuttery staff ended up having to call the police on her to have her removed from the premises. I just want to commend all of the staff for how they handled the situation and ensuring the safety of the clients in the store. read more

I asked for a trim straight cut across for my daughter. Simple enough. Apparently not for this stylist. Got home to really look at it and this is what I got. One side was completely longer than the other and there were also several stray strands longer than the rest of her hair. Not to mention the rude customer service from the stylist. Staff were all friendly, this was my second visit with a different hairdresser- after my cut was complete the hairdresser told me my appointment didn't include a blow dry. I had reserved my appointment in advance and it was absolutely part of my booking. I asked them to please blow dry my hair and they happily did. It was frustrating but I figured maybe once we got to the register they'd be able to confirm my appointment and what I had booked. I get to the register and they did in fact charge me twice for the blow dry. I paid, tipped and just will never be back. The cut was what I had asked for, but I was left with product bold up that made my hair tangle during the blow dry and they kept yanking on my head. I just wish this individual didn't feel it necessary to upcharge me. I hope they don't this to future customers. read more

Frustrated and feel scammed. The price for kids cut is listed at $16 on their price board. I called ahead to make an appointment but when we got there the stylist we were supposed to have was running behind. Another said she would do it. She spent 8 min cutting my daughter's hair - a straight cut. She didn't wash it and didn't dry it. Yet she charged me $35! She claimed her rates are higher since she had more experience. None of this was communicated to me and the cut was blah. I could have done it myself just as good or better I just wanted my daughter to have the salon experience. I should have taken her to my normal salon because she would have had such a better experience and cut for the same price. Still, a couple weeks later, and I'm still upset about the lack of professionalism and the bad cut, so sharing the experience so you won't be surprised. read more

I had super long hair down to my butt , and then I showed the lady 2 pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like for the layers, and she said " that is too long to do " then I showed he with my hand how I wanted the layers to be , and she said "okay". Then she started cutting my hair and then at the end I come to see that my hair is short up to my neck now . I was so upset to see that she did something that I didn't ask for . Like she could have asked me becore cutting the hair " is this much okay to cut off " but she didn't even bother or care to ask or show me before chopping my hair off . I wish I could give this Hair Cuttery 0 stars after my most recent treatment. I have been a customer at this location for more than 10 years, even after both of my regular stylists left. After multiple turnovers in management, this salon has hit an ALL TIME LOW. I've been turned away twice because the only artists working only took appointments and were booked. Not only have I been turned away (from a a place designed / created solely for taking walk-ins) but it has been in an incredibly rude manner. Mussette S. is the hidden gem at the Merchant Plaza Hair Cuttery. She does a great job with little girl bangs for my daughter and gives my long hair layers. I'm so glad I found Mussette. Mussette was the one who recognized chlorine damaged hair and introduced me to clarifying shampoo. We now use the clarifying shampoo every time we go swimming in a chlorinated pool and our hair is so much healthier. read more
