Serena is absolutely AMAZING! I adore her personality and her huge heart. My son tried growing his hair out, and honestly... it turned into a complete disaster. His hair was severely matted in the back and an absolute mess. Serena didn't bat an eye--no complaints, no judgment--she simply went right to work. She transformed what felt impossible into the cutest, most amazing haircut that my son absolutely loves. This is huge for us because he refuses to go to a barber after a past experience where his hair was cut way too short and he was completely devastated. That experience is actually why he wanted to grow his hair out in the first place. Serena is the only person my son will let cut his hair. He literally says, "She's the only one who can touch my hair--I don't trust anyone else." That alone says everything. I went here for only hair color. I was afraid to ask for haircut. The last one I got was at hair Xpessions. Nightmare of a haircut increase in price. The output doesn't balance the price. There are choice few that are busy but good. Therefore, I went to this haircuttery. Gosh some Hashimi was terrible with color and cut. Not only that she did some price gauging. Asked for an inch off and layers. The woman then proceeded to cut off about four inches after i asked her to stop she continued to cut off more and tried to tell me it was only a bit. Highly disappointed in the service and very upset due to how long it takes for my hair to reach that length. She then proceeds to weight down my hair in oil to make other look longer. I don't recommend anyone to step foot in this location. Wish I never stepped foot here or even paid. I could understand cutting off a bit more than an inch but the difference between four and one is concerning and makes me wonder if they have any training. read more

Last year went in to just cut length off, just a straight across the bottom cut. Walked out with slanted hairline. Right much longer than left, everyone could notice it. I called back to let them no my dissatisfaction and they wanted me to come back to correct t it. Umm, no way. Last week, out of convenience, ran in to get the same straight across the bottom cut. This was our first time at this location and we will not be back. My daughter requested an inch cut off and long layers. We even showed the stylist how much she wanted cut off but for some reason, the woman just cut and cut. My daughter left with hair that was about 5+ inches shorter and was in tears all night. She is devastated. This was not a difficult cut. I do not understand how someone whose job it is to cut hair can make such a error. Either she doesn't know what an inch is (big problem for a hair dresser) or she chose not to listen to the client (also a big problem). read more

It has been a while since I had gone to Hair Cuttery. Ester used to do my hair but she retired. I chose Fazela. She doesn't chit-chat too much (which is good because it was 10am on a Saturday and I was not in a talking mood). I wanted my hair to be red (like fire engine red). She did so. The color was good but it was patchy in some spots. Granted my hair was all sorts of different colors from fading but it still looked like parts of my previous hair color was showing. Fazela said that the cause of the uneven colors was due to the lighting or the fact that my hair was still wet. My hair was just blowed dried and the lighting was fine. I think she made an error and didn't want to admit it. I asked her kindly to make some changes...still not exactly what I wanted. She added a bunch more due to the top of my head and now it seems too extreme! I put my faith into the stylist but I feel like she wasn't quite understanding what my issue was. Plus, red hair tends to fade quickly so I guess everything will even out? ‍ I could see that I was approaching the two and half hour mark of my stay and her clients were starting to stack up so I didn't want to be a bother. I am giving a two-star review because of the online appointment system. I wanted to use the 50% off coupon for any service over $15. The manager (I think) tried to explain to me that since the stylist that I picked was not part of the "Select Stylist" section of the coupon she would not honor the 50% off. How the heck was I supposed to know that through their app when there is no explanation or clarification of what that means? She offered me a $10 off coupon instead (). I still paid about $100 (including tip). I wanted to use the coupon since it expires on Jan 6th. I hadn't gotten my hair cut and styled in a while but this secret language and run-round explanation about this 50% off coupon really irked me and really devalued my experience. Stay away from Grace! She's rude and has no manners, she was trying to convince me I needed much more expensive treatment, she washed my hair with cold water, she did not massage conditioner into my hair, rinsing it immediately, the back of my clothes was thoroughly soaked after she finished shampooing, she repeatedly burned my scalp with blow drier, although I asked her not to... I couldn't wait for this torture to be over. Never again I will come to this location. read more

My husband was unlucky enough to have an in experience hair stylist cut his hair. He specifically said he wants to keep the length to please just trim the sides. Not only did she neglect to listen to what my husband said she went to town on his hair. She chopped off inches of his hair that he patiently grew but to make it worse the product of the haircut was so ugly it made my husband aged another 15 years. The stylist should not touch anyone hair. A manikin is a perfect fit as she need more practice. I don't think we will come back and thank goodness my hair wasn't touched. read more

This was my first time going to a Hair Cuttery. I saw other reviews on Yelp, and decided to check it out because I needed a trim and my usual hairdresser from "Hair Magic" did not have an availability that worked with my schedule. I was a walk-in - the wait was short and it was easy to sign in and click what I wanted to get done. I don't know who cut my hair, but I specifically told her I just wanted a trim. I'm trying to grow my hair out and only wanted maybe half an inch off to make sure I didn't have any split ends. She heard this loud and clear, but here I am writing a bad review because my hair that takes FOREVER to grow is now below my shoulders. She had to have taken 2 inches off my hair. She trimmed it and showed me how it was in the back and I "okayed" the length, but it seemed to get shorter from what she originally showed me. Even after she blow dried it - she STILL trimmed more. And when I got home, I saw that it wasn't even in the front. I have a strand that is shorter than everywhere else. Here I was, just trying to get a trim to keep my ends healthy to grow my hair out, and now it's worse than it was before - I'm ready to cry I'm so upset with how it turned out. I've been going to this Hair Cuttery for a few years and have seen a few of the stylists, but for the past couple of years Julie has been doing a terrific job cutting my hair. She helped me move from a longer style to a very stylish short cut that makes me feel years younger. She listens to what I want and takes her time to make sure my hair is perfect. She also does a great job with waxing and is very meticulous about getting every bit of hair removed! Julie is like the old-fashioned hair dresser from our mothers' days--you remember the ladies who listen and nod and give advice. She oohs and aahs over your good news, and tsks tsks when you tell her your troubles. She's a sweet woman and a talented stylist, and I always look forward to my appointments with her. This place is truly a sweet little gem. Ester is a sweet amazing lady and really helped me out. I came in with a cast on my hand not being able to wash my hair. My regular stylist was away on vacation and I was close to this place and decided to give it a try. All I wanted was my hair washed and dried and Ester was so sweet about it and did a wonderful job. She was very professional and did a nice job with my hair- I asked for something basic, a 1-inch trim and basic layering, on shoulder length hair. The haircut was so cheap compared to where I normally go, it was interesting to see how a discount compares to the competition. The difference here is, in the decorum. In a regular salon, or even Aveda training grounds in DC, the stylist would NOT say to you, "that hair color you have--its so ugly!" even if she was trying to convince you to come back for hair coloring services. In an effort to save some money on salon visits. I thought I would start going to our local hair cuttery. I figure it would save me a $100 every six to eight weeks, which would be nice to add to any budget. Well, I may just need to save my pennies another way. I have come here from time to time with my sons. A simple boys haircut has never been a problem here. I figured I might as well give it a try for myself. The hair stylist greeted me and seemed very friendly. I asked for a shampoo, haircut and blowdry. I inquired about the waxing services and decided to have some eyebrow waxing done while I was there. ( I didn't realize they offered this service) Most of the waxing and haircut was relatively quiet. The hair stylist wasn't very chatty, but seemed pleasant enough. I asked for a simple cut. It didn't turn out very well. In fact, there were stray long hairs everywhere. She didn't finish very well around my neck. I had to snip quite a bit when I came home. The oddest part about the visit was after she finished cutting my hair, she started to remove the smock before drying my hair. I told her, I asked for a shampoo, cut AND blowdry. She seemed very put off by this apparent revelation. She asked me to wait a minute, and went to check the computer. Really!? Is it that hard to blowdry my hair? I didn't want to go out looking like a drowned rat. She returned, rather put out by my request. Do people normally just get a cut and not have it styled here? Have I missed something? This is a salon of sorts, isn't it? Another weird outcome from this visit, I broke out where she waxed. I have been waxing for years, have never swelled or had bumps. This visit, I did. I sat in my car and cried for a whole 15 minutes before I drove back home. I have long hair and have curtain bangs. They grew out after 5 months. So naturally I wanted them back to their shorter length which is right under my nose. I told the women that cut my hair I want it below my nose. She saw it and said okay. I showed her a picture when I walked in of the curtain bangs I wanted. I even said the word CURTAIN BANGS. She proceeded to cut my hair. I hate hairdressers and can't trust them to ever cut my hair but I got my curtain bangs done at Ulta by Betty and she was fantastic!! Naturally they didn't have an appointment for 3 days with her and I have a girls trip I leave for tomorrow. This was my only day off and I thought huh this salon has good reviews and it's right by my house let me go there. You can't possibly mess up curtain bangs. I now have bangs. Up to my eyebrows. It's as if she just ignored what I asked for and went into lala land. I of course did not pay but that does not bring my hair back. My entire trip is now ruined and i have no faith in hairdressers anymore. I see Bernardita, the Salon manager and she is awesome. As a man, I am used to the stylist giving me the same ole same ole "man cut" no matter what I ask for. This is not the case for her. I have not tried their other services nor have I used them personally. I definitely recommend them for routine trims or easy haircuts. I know people have their reservations about going to a Hair Cuttery rather than a salon with a fancy name, but the women who work here are certified master stylists and absolutely incredible. I came in to see Serena with hair that was stained red and damaged by my previous stylist with a goal of rose gold hair. Serena and I had originally decided to use a mix of golden blonde and pastel pink, but after trying to strip the red out and failing (red dye is notorious for this), she brainstormed with me new ideas. She toned my hair to a brilliant moonlight blonde and mixed silver and pastel pink to cover the red. This was an option I had not even though of. All of we steps, right down to the method in which she applied the color, were meticulously thought out. During our conversation, she told me she had a passion for color. She also maintained the integrity of my hair by not over-lightening and applying hair masks in between processes. I could not be happier with my outcome. Meanwhile, my mother also went to go see Kay to cover her gray. Kay is fast, friendly, and talented. She gave my mother tips on how to save money while still maintaining color, and did an excellent job matching my mom's requests. I went to a stylist elsewhere and paid $55 for a hair cut -- one that was beautiful and which perfectly shaped my face. I received numerous compliments and felt like a knock out. Since my hair had grown out, I decided to try Hair Cuttery to shorten it a bit. How badly could they damage a beautiful cut? Very. I went from having an expensive looking cut that needed a trim to looking cheap. These stylists don't appear to have any training. I could have had a random person on the street do the same job, if not better. The stylist just trimmed my hair like snip here, snip there. Done. As if cutting a sheet of paper. No care. No artistry. I look worse than when I went in -- hair has no shape, no flow, no body, no bounce. I now look like a dowdy librarian whose live-in myopic brother cut my hair. I cried looking at it. I don't know what to do -- spend $50 at better salon fixing this mess or going back to these HC and risk having it butchered further. Never again. A good hair cut makes all the difference in the world.
