    Tomato Beef Soup

Hainan House is about the only 1st-generation (1980s) Vietnamese immigrants' restaurant that I actually respect lol. Yes. The owners are Vietnamese. Doesn't mean they don't make very authentic Chinese food though, and the place itself is very much a Chinese restaurant. I'm not going to discuss Vietnamese-Chinese history or demographics right now. Anyway, back to what matters. Hainan House is a VERY traditional place doing your classic Chinese-takeout dishes, but it takes pride in its cuisine and tastes nothing like, say, Bamboo Garden. This is original Chinese-American cuisine in its best form, untarnished by runaway capitalism and the ever-growing desire for cheap ingredients. All of their takeout dishes are what I would call "reliable": Nothing too special and basically what you expect, but always better than most, and a safe bet for when you just want to eat something without worrying about it too much. And of course, no discussion of Hainan House would be complete without mentioning their soups. You have your takeout favorites like egg drop, wonton and hot-and-sour, but also their house special the "tomato beef". These are basically exactly what they sound like, but in a way that makes you realize the usual kinds should be the weird one: The hot-and-sour soup is much tangier and has a far deeper crunch of woodear mushrooms, while the egg drop soup, my favorite, is thick and clear with pieces of chicken, vegetables, and skin. It's a purely chicken-based soup with drops of egg, as the name entails, not... whatever the neon-orange stuff at Double Dragon and co. is supposed to be. Egg doesn't look like that, yo. Another forte of Hainan House is their classic appetizers, in particular the "beef strings". Ultimately, it's just barbecue beef in a fancier form, but it's better than any beef skewer I've seen. The shrimp toasts are worth trying too, and they have the best crab rangoons in town. Not that it's a high bar to clear. Hainan House's strongest point though, has to be their dinner combos. So they are the only place I've seen in the USA that engage in what would be called "cơm phần" in Vietnam: A shared dinner whose amount of food would scale with the number of people joining, but each person still gets their own dish while free to have what everybody else is getting. Of course, in classic Asian fashion, this has to be done with lots and lots of rice. They call it "Dinner A" which, eh, could've come up with a better name. What this all means is that they are the perfect choice for gatherings between close friends, though. Everyone sits on a round table. Regarding their Vietnamese cuisine, one of their signature dishes is mì xào giòn or deep-fried lo mein noodles (yes, we Vietnameses deep-fry stuff too). They are the only ones offering this in Fort Wayne and I must say, their rendition is pretty good. Their Vietnamese coffee is also nice, but like every other Vietnamese place in America unless otherwise stated, don't order the phở here lol. TL;DR Best Chinese place in the Fort, especially for families.

Really good Chinese food... The restaurant is a bit dated, but it's very clean, the service is excellent, and the food is good (plus inexpensive). I personally like China Palace a bit more overall, but Hainan House is a close second for Chinese food in SW Fort Wayne.

I really enjoyed my experience at Hainan House! This was a date night stop on a Friday evening after having a craving for some good Chinese food. You can find the restaurant in the Foster Park Plaza off Bluffton Road. The outside is nothing to look at, but the interior is nicely decorated with traditional decorations. The staff is always super attentive and happy to have you dining there. If you don't want to dine in, you can also order takeout! The menu is not lacking options. We decided to order a special for two. It included plum wine, soup, an appetizer platter and two entrees with rice; tons of food for a great price! For our entrees we chose cashew chicken and Mongolian beef. The Mongolian beer was great, but I was not a huge fan of the cashew chicken. Overall, it was a good meal for a great price. Stop into Hainan House if you are having a hankering for Chinese food!

Service was great, seemed to have lots of regulars. Food was nothing special, typical americanized asian food. Ambiance is quaint.

Golden China - Egg drop soup

Golden China fits in the middle category of Chinese food. There is fast food-carry out Chinese -…read morethe is better than that. There is gourmet Chinese food - this isn't that good. This is right in between. So fit your expectations to your visit. The facility is located in a strip mall that is easy to get in and out of. The restaurant is fairly large and clean. It has matching Chinese decor and is comfortable. The team here helps each other out. Most are not strong English speakers so they come off as a little bit cold and less than friendly. When they serve you...everyone pitches in. When tu are in between meal parts...they are are to stop and get help. The menu is very big and traditional. You will find all the dishes you would expect at a Chinese restaurant. We picked the family style dinner which came with soup, appetizers and an entree per person. This gives a party of 3 or more the chance to share dishes. This isn't very common at most restaurants. The egg drop soup was like you would expect. Full egg taste with a smooth buttery sauce. There were nice pieces of egg white that gave the soup some volume. Very good. The appetizers were just okay. The egg rolls were good. The vegetable filling was nice and fresh. The wrapper was crisp and crunchy and a bit oily. The crab rangoon pieces were okay. The outside was very crunchy and very oily. The filling had a stronger crème cheese taste and less crab flavoring. The battered shrimp pieces were odd. They were thin, not meaty, oily and lacked a shrimp flavor. My party orders the sweet and sour pork, almond chicken and Mongolian beef. The pork and chicken dishes look good. They were very attractive and large in portion size. The Mongolian beef was very good. The beef was moist and soft. It had a mild beef taste and mixed well with the rice. The rices was cooked perfectly. The onions were soft but held there form nicely. They absorbed the beef taste nicely as well! Overall...a good choice. You should give it a try if you are after a middle of the road quality cuisine at a moderate cost.

Nothing like any Lamb I've ever tasted. No offer of discount, from woman manager. I would have better off to have had McDonald's. Then that crap!
