This dog , who CAAWS actually rescued from a kill shelter, was a shy, slightly reticent dog. Sabra ,who is a school teacher and a volunteer at CAAWS, helped me to choose " Austin" ( their name). During this same time, I was tending to my Mom( she has since passed on ) and was helping my family in Virginia. Keep in mind , CAAWS does have a screening process, and for a very good reason. These animals, at least many, have not had " happy" lives, and some are recovering from abuse or neglect . They want to make sure that you will be a loving and responsible pet owner. I am fortunate that our son helps to take care of our dog if and when we must leave town. Owning a pet is a responsibility, and a healthy dog needs more than food , water and trips to the vet ... they need love , tenderness, regular exercise and to insure that CAAWS dogs are matched to a suitable owner, yes, they are very careful with whom they place these deserving pets. Make room in your home and heart for a life time of unconditional love. I know that there are many people who love dogs as much as I do. Our dog did require some dental work , and because of this, we now are very careful about how we care for his remaining teeth . We have friends who have become volunteers there, and I know that the adoption process may seem " detailed"... but CAAWS loves to see their pets find a fur ever home. I highly recommend going to meet these deserving pets. Adoptions can be arranged to suit your schedule. In our case, we met our dog, filled out the necessary paperwork and had a two week trip. When we came home, we were able to adopt our dog... he is a very lovable canine, and having him in our life also enriched us in many ways. He was with us when we had to be rescued from the August 2016 flood... and has been a joy through the many storms since then. When we needed to move into an apartment in 2016, he was also a joy, and his personality is friendly and thankfully, he isn't into barking unnecessarily. I highly recommend CAAWS, their caring volunteers, their fees are kept low... and all of their animals ( dogs, cats) love being adopted. Sabra, and other volunteers, do a great job. People who let their animals go free and breed at will need to understand that their unwanted litters will most likely end up in a shelter or dead on the road. The staff was very helpful and very thorough. Someone came to my apartment to talk with me before I was approved, and she spent quite a bit of time with me. There were some hoops to jump through but I didn't mind because I knew they wanted the perfect home for this beautiful boy. He had been taken home by someone else a month or two before and had been returned after only one night. They wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. It didn't. I was approved to adopt and he came home with me shortly after. They had a lot of rules about medical treatment and a vet checkup, etc. Stuart had heartworms and ARNO paid for his treatment. We also had some behavior problems in the weeks after he came home with me (he even peed on my bed -- repeatedly) and I once called ARNO in tears, worried that I wasn't a good fit and no knowing what to do. ARNO sent a trainer to my home. She spent about an hour with us, talking to me about the behavior issues and things I could do to help him settle in and feel at home. Today, Stuart (aka Little Dude) is happy and healthy. He's not so quiet anymore and he's getting over many of the fears he developed from being homeless and probably abused at an early age. He has a home and a human who adores him and the two times he got away from me he didn't go more than 50ft and then waited for me so he also knows he can trust me and I'm not abandoning him. I have ARNO to thank. I see some reviews criticizing Ginnie. I don't know her but she's one person. I've been working for more than three decades and every business has someone (usually more than one) who doesn't play well with others. I would caution you to look at their purpose and their business model and know that their first priority is the health and safety of those babies who they have promised to protect and care for. No amount of entitlement or whining will ever make them stray from that mission. And if you're truly committed to finding a forever family member, you'll understand that not every animal is perfect for you.

I replied by stating that I did not indicate any such thing. The cat would live indoors, eat, sleep indoors, and otherwise be an indoor cat. If outside, it would be completely supervised by me. I never received another response to that. I also very much believe that the fact that I am a senior did not sit well with them. They do ask your age on the app (that should be illegal). Maybe that's the real reason and they are using outside as an excuse. In any event, the cat is still on the website living in a shelter when it could have had a very wonderful loving home., No wonder there are so many animals living in shelters.
