I first heard about Haibayo through an eco-yoga event I did through Ecologic. I love vietnamese food/coffee so was excited to go back for the food/drink. Both the bahn mi crossiant and the Cà Phê Muối were delicious! I was a little nervous both pronouncing and trying the Cà Phê Muối (due to the salt) but they helped with both in a super non-judgmental way and I'm so glad I ordered it. I'm interested in collaborating with them on a potential community event and they were so open to it! Will definitely be back! read more

The hojicha with coconut water was surprisingly really good, but make sure to give it a good stir before drinking it. The drink comes layered with coconut water filling about half the cup, ice in the middle, and the hojicha poured on top which is why you have to mix it before taking a sip. Once everything is stirred together, the flavors blend beautifully. What I appreciated most was that there was no added sugar. The strong roasted notes of the hojicha really shine through, while the coconut water adds a light, natural sweetness and refreshing finish. The cafe itself was also much larger than I expected. From the outside, it looks fairly modest, but once you walk in, the space stretches far back and feels much more spacious than it appears. There was plenty of seating, and the layout made it feel open without being overly crowded. There are people who would order a drink and hang out with friends or do work on their laptop. You can even play board games here too if you really wanted to. Another cool thing is that there's an outdoor patio area in the back. It serves as a shared space where vendors can set up cookouts and people are able to purchase food while enjoying their drink. There's like a schedule of which vendor comes on which day. It gives the space more of a community gathering feel rather than just a traditional coffee shop. Between the unique drinks, spacious setup, and outdoor food experiences, this spot offers a lot more than your average cafe and is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

When it comes to matcha, Haibayo doesn't play around. My favorite was the dirty matcha with oat milk. I do ask them to add simple syrup because I'm a sucker for anything sweet. The workers are always nice and chill, too. Overall, just a really nice spot to grab a drink and chill. read more

Great atmosphere, it's like a maze, one cafe within another space, pretty neat. We tried their mekong citrus special which is a lime and expresso summer drink. Exactly what I was looking for. Tart, refreshing, and no sweet flavor at all. The coffee is on the acidic side, clean tasting, not too smoky or bitter. It's like a lime-nade with coffee flavor. Came by for their Stir Friday Night Variety Show/Community Showcase which is outside their normal open hours. The evening we went they had a singer, 2 comedians, a local business, and some of the Stir Friday Night cast doing their thang. Haibayo was slinging the drinks and snacks including some drink specials. Jeremy C. had the Vietnamese iced coffee, I had the mango sticky rice drink, and we shared the croissant banh mi which I might actually enjoy more than an actual banh mi?? Is that even possible?? The vibes in the cafe/community space are so cool, one of the most unique spots I've been to in a while. All around an entertaining evening in a really neat spot with unique and tasty food and drinks. They're currently hosting these events every 2 weeks, be sure to check out Stir Friday Night's website to book tickets! But really also just stop by to visit this place during their actual open hours during the day because it's so chill and cool. read more

A really cool addition to the neighborhood. The place is bright and vibrant with plenty of seating and outlets. The coffee shop is all the way in the back and it looks like there is a small patio. The only downside is it opens at 8:00am, so if you have to go to the loop or log on by 8:30am then you might not be able to get a drink before hand. I went with the Cà Phê Sữa which was pretty tasty. read more

Loved the nostalgic design of this coffee shop. As a Chinese person, I genuinely had a little "wow" moment when walking through that smaller doorway into the order area - it felt familiar in the best way. The baristas were super friendly, and I especially liked the small board showing photos of their specialty drinks and each barista's personal favorite. I ordered the Mekong Citrus and a Chai Thai Tea with cheese cream on top. Both were excellent. The Thai tea is definitely a calorie bomb, but it's worth it - so good! I also enjoyed browsing the little Asian-themed plant shop next door, filled with books, candles, cups, and other small goodies. We'll definitely be back. read more

This new cafe is everything to me. Bright and vibrant inside, the cafe drinks match to a T. The orange (Orange Amber) and lemon (Mekong Citrus) drinks are light and citrusy, not a typical espresso drink you'd find at other coffee shops. BUT it is infinitely delicious and you NEED TO come here. The Bahn mi on a croissant was the show stopper. Buttery and spicy. In love. Can't wait to see what this space does. I love it. Service is friendly and the menu is interesting and well executed. A ridiculously beautiful and spacious (yet cozy) spot, my only complaint is that there are already a couple of fantastic cafes within the same 2 block area and hate to see them have to compete. Haibayo is one of my favorite cafe experiences in all of Chicago, with a good drink selection and a decent banh mi croissant. Since it coexists with a community center, the seating is plentiful and varied but often fills up with how deservedly popular the cafe is. Haibayô on Argyle Street is a café, coffee house, and community gathering place--but at certain times, it transforms into a buzzing, DJ-fueled dry bar. This is such a wonderful cafe that truly celebrates Argyle's history and culture! I came here to work remotely for a day, and there was plenty of space and outlets available. The decor was stunning, and I loved how it recognizes the creation of Argyle and the history of Vietnamese immigrants who came to Chicago. The workers were very helpful in providing drink options. I loved my coffee drink - it was fresh and had a great coconut flavor. It's also connected to the charming plant shop Qideyas, so you really get it all with this spot. I was so excited to see this space! It's so lively, great music, and plenty of vendors. In the back is where the Cafe is and plenty of seats for chilling with friends. I liked my Dirty Matcha Latte it was very strong, but I have to come back to try their Chai Thai Cream Cheese. read more

I'm being 100% honest when I saw me and my friends loved this spot. It's an incredible "third space." They host community events (a mahjong tournament was taking place when we arrived), and have a big enough shop to still get your coffee (or matcha in my case) and meet with a friend. I can't wait for summer when the outdoor back patio is also open. The matcha was made traditionally and was tasty even on my no sugar diet. We met one of the owners as well on our way out and there was a language exchange event happening. We also stopped by the store connected to them and enjoyed shopping there for small gifts. It has the vibe of an Asian coffeehouse in Amsterdam. It has coffee that tastes similar to, if not, Dark Matter. You walk in and there is a connection to the plant store on your left. You walk through the 1st room. You walk through the 2nd room. The 3rd room has the coffee bar, but you can sit in any room as well as the back patio. One of the coolest coffee shop interiors I've seen in Chicago. The ambiance is great. I also thought it was unique they had a dirty matcha on the menu. You don't see that often so I decided to try it. The barista seemed like he was in a bad mood and it took him a minute to acknowledge me and take my order, but he was probably just having a bad day. The dirty matcha tasted pretty good! I might suggest some kind of sweetener if you get one. read more
