Little to no service provided I was ignored for a very long time and when I was finally acknowledged was treated with total rudeness.

More of Australia's ocean bounty done right…read more Note: Australians take great pride in taking all seafood from sustainable fisheries predicated on responsible management. Part retail fish market, part casual eatery and known for incredibly fresh, gigantic hot and cold combo seafood platters and for the adventurous, do it yourself selections. Great selection of uber fresh, creamy Sydney rock oysters and a crisper, "cucumber" like flavor of Tasmanian selections, perfect natural with their house sweet chili, lime, ginger sauce whose acidic grip makes the clean oceanic flavor shine. The Harvey Bay scallops just cooked through, with a yielding texture, the candy of the sea. Served with a cauliflower puree that is not necessary but adds to the richness. A simple pot of very plump mussels in a creamy white wine sauce also satisfying. Do not pass up the Moreton Bay bugs. Very fresh, tails split and grilled with a lemon butter, good eats. Grilling amplifies the oceanic flavor while the lemon butter adds richness to the tender tails. A crayfish in creamy, cheesy, monray sauce also a great way to enjoy Australia's crustaceans. The flavor of the barely cooked through tail meat is kicked up with the addition of an intense lobster / seafood stock to the monray sauce. Finally fish, lots on offer but do not miss the chance to try the deep sea, Antarctic Glacier 51 toothfish. Large, oily, dense, white flakes with incredible clean, sweet flavor similar but more intense than a cross between scallop and monkfish. Sublime when simply grilled. Fish dishes do come with two sides but those are completely unnecessary. Efficient, friendly though abrupt service. All good as you get your food. While there are probably even better places to indulge on Australian seafood, as a visitor with limited time, Richmond Oysters delivers in spades.

Our waiter was great, recommending what to eat and what wine to have etc. We decided to stop by for a dozen oysters, and it ended up being a huge meal..... They also have XXL versions of the St Helen and premium ones (like a Miyami breed from Tasmania?) for a bit more. Long high tables right at the store to slurp them. Or bring them to the food court for sit down tables. They also have sea urchin sometimes; $14 for a whole sea urchin, already half shelled and prepared to eat ASAP. Why only 4 stars? It stands majestically just back from the street and you may be a little overwhelmed by its size, trust me, that feeling will become pretty intense when you get inside. There are aisles devoted to sauces, dried fungi and seafood, woks and steamers and dumplings - this supermarket really does have everything. I personally love the fresh section towards the front. There are always lots of vegetables and herbs that you can buy in bulk for a ridiculously small price (several clumps of baby pak choi were less than $2), and you'll also find some exotic ingredients like abalone and winter melon. If you aren't really looking to buy then I recommend you at least have a look around. Head to the dried fungi and seafood aisle - it is actually incredible. There are exotic mushrooms that resemble coral with really bizarre names (pigs ear mushrooms are a prime example) and there is also dried octopus and squid that hang in plastic bags. While you may or may not choose to buy anything to cook with any of the food inside, this supermarket is truly extraordinary and very fun to explore.
It may seem a bit weird to review a supermarket as we all know you might think they are all just…read morethe same. But nevertheless the size and range of produce does vary quite a lot. The Coles on Johnston Street in the heart of Fitzroy is a fairly small shop and is pretty much the only decent sized supermarket for a good 1km radius. It certainly caters to more of a Fitzroy crowd with quite a large selection of obscure fruits and veg and more than usual organic offerings. Where I do feel let down is the seafood and meat sections that don't offer the same about of range. If you go late in the day you can usually get tons of things 40% (sometimes 66%) off, so if you live locally you can take advantage and eat your treats the next day. They also have pretty good baked goods. As for the staff, they are really friendly and quite often up for a chat.
The worst Coles I've been to... sadly, it's the only supermarket in Fitzroy…read more It's small, which is to be expected given the real estate prices here. So selection is an issue if you're into fresh produce and meat, but that's not all that surprising. (Although it does get frustrating when I have the chance to go to the huge Woolworth's in nearby-but-just-slightly-too-far-for-grocery-shopping Collingwood.) What is surprising is the terrible inventory management. Things they are routinely out of stock in: coriander. basil. parmesan cheese. BEEF MINCE. What kind of supermarket runs out of these things?? There are also often no shopping baskets as you walk in and you have to go to the checkouts to get them. They have plenty of self-checkout, but I find these a pain when buying fresh produce, and they frequently only have two manned checkouts that always have queues. The only upside is that they do pretty good discounting in snack foods, and I've found some decent meat specials during weekdays. The stock staff are helpful when you can find them. If there was any other decent option in walking distance, I'd go there, but sadly the only other option where I live is a tiny IGA.

It has two levels - we got a table upstairs. Despite it being so big, it seems to be fill up a lot. It is wise to book as we did. The decor is very homely and warm and the atmosphere is fairly buzzing. The service was very good and they gave good advice on our entree choices. They have a good range of seafood on offer as well besides their mixed grill goodness. In short, this place was a winner and we'll be back again soon.

Greengrocers, fishmongers, florists and enormous delis are just some of the things you'll find inside. I recommend getting in early (around 9am) and just taking a walk. You'll pick up some bargains, but I'll give you a run down of my favourite places. The chicken store stocks some great deals including enormous fresh chicken lasagna for around $17 - big enough to feed 4, you can freeze them or pop them in the oven for half an hour and get a delicious and hearty meal. The juice bar is a great place to refresh. The have low-fat creamy yoghurt, fresh juices and really excellent smoothies made with yoghurt and milk, or sorbet. Nick and Sue's gourmet deli is a must if you love dips, bread or any sort of meat. Prosciutto sliced freshly, soft pasta and a wide range of cheeses are also sold here. Nick and Sue's is your one stop shop inside the market. I'm constantly surprised by the quality and price of the ingredients (in a good way), and even though you may have to jostle around a counter to get served, it adds to the rustic atmosphere of the market.
