I've lived many years in Southern California and not once had I ever been to Hadley Fruit Orchards in either my childhood or adult life. It was advertised to me by a friend, as it was an essential stop for them and their family during road trips. First off, I heard it used to be an actual stand, but has since moved to a large storefront with high ceilings and the whole nine yards. They're known for their dry goods as well as the date shake. On this particular day, I came for the date shakes. We got one regular and one banana. I don't really know what I was expecting from a random fruit-stand-turned-store in the middle of nowhere, but I'll say I was quite pleasantly surprised. The date shake was, pretty much exactly as advertised. It was a milkshake with dates. It was a nice shake: better than most milkshakes, I'd say. It tasted more...natural? But I'm unsure if the fact that 'date' was in the name had anything to do with it. The banana variant, however, was even better. I liked the kind of texture that the banana adds, and I would get it over the original date shake pretty much every single time. The cafe is beside the gift shop & grocery section, and there's plenty of indoor chairs & tables. The restrooms are really clean too & there were plenty of stalls. I got some Date Cookies from the grocery section and a date soft-serve in a cone from the cafe. The soft-serve was delicious! It was a lot too for $5.99. The line was so long for the popular date shake & date soft-serve - which was a separate line from people ordering food from the cafe like sandwiches. We wanted to try a famous date shake before leaving Palm Springs but most places were closed. We decided to stop here on our way home as it was the only one open. When we arrived, there was no line and it looked like a market. There was a small soft serve station. It was all premade. She just used a machine to fill our shake cups. It was fast. It tasted like sweet vanilla soft serve with pieces of coconut. The date pieces had a coconut meat texture to me. I also tried a mini pecan pie. That was not my favorite. We went for the experience to try it and I'm glad we did but I wouldn't go back and order a date shake. I wish I knew they were known for trail mix cause I would have tried that too. I've kind of made it a habit to stop here on my way back to California from Arizona. I will say going west on the 10 and getting in that roundabout can be a little tricky so just be cautious. Just a great location to pick up some snacks and fresh food and souvenirs as well as their famous state shakes. Very creamy lightly sweetened. Clean restrooms. Plenty of parking. Friendly service. Just all around good vibes. And honestly, you can get in and out of there in probably 10 minutes and under I think they're very conscientious of getting people back on the road. When you go in their cafe there is a line for their popular date shakes and a line for their food. The date shake line is always long but worth the wait. I went after shopping with two other people and we tried their shake and new soft serve. I love that theres an option for their regular date shake or their banana date shake. For a little more you can do add-ins such as strawberry, coffee, or chocolate. I paid an additional $1.50 for their honey roasted peanut to be added to my banana date shake. It was divine and delicious. I highly recommend it if you like banana and peanut butter. I also got to try their date soft soft which was also good but I still liked my shake better. A serving of their soft serve was huge. Just be warned there is dairy. In their cafe, they also have hot dogs, tamales, burgers and pizzas. I do want to come back and try their other date shakes and their chili dog. Pricing is affordable and the cafe is casual. There are plenty of places to sit but it was quite busy that Friday we came. Let me start by saying this review is only for the Date Shake. There is a store here and other food options. Whenever I head to the Palm Springs area a Date Shake stop is a must do. I have a go to spot but finally decided to stop here. As for the shake there is original option and a banana date shake option. What I like about Hadley's is they have the option to add mix ins and they have quite a few choices. I opted for the original this time so I can get a baseline taste. Overall I really enjoyed the shake and will try banana/date with a peanut butter mix in next time. I deducted one star as there was a line to get the shake and it took 10-15 minutes to get my shake. I recall coming here with my parents decades ago [lots of decades]. I drove up and said "oh man it's closed" but it is not. There is some construction on the original building but there is a new huge building above it in the plaza. I jumped in line to get a date smoothie while my wife went shopping. After spending about 20 minutes I made my purchase selections, a bag of dark chocolate covered dates and a bag of dark chocolate cover almonds.
