We ate dinner in an igloo last night after going to Botanic Garden Lightscape. Igloos are adorable, they're on the outdoor patio which is also lovely. The holiday nights are aa really nice addition. Igloos need to be reserved in advance, and seat 6. The igloos were great. Service was great. Food was fine. French Fried Onions: I thought these were so dissapointing. I love onion rings, and so was very excited to try these. They were bland and not crispy. They came with cocktail sauce not ranch. Beyond Burger on a Pretzel roll: fine. Unlimited plate of fries for the table: I thought this was very clever. I think we got the perfect amount without much waste. Fries were decent (which is a compliment. Chocolate mouse cake: good. Outdoor eating area is comfortable. Service was good. I really don't know what the hype is about with their burgers though. I had the classic Hackneysburger on rye cooked medium rare with cheddar cheese. The burger did not taste seasoned at all. The rye was a spongy bread that did not stand up well to the burger juices. And we were presented with a small (6" maybe) plate of mediocre fries for the two of us. There are plenty of excellent burger joints in the north and northwest suburbs. Wonderful bison burgers - my fave! French fries are excellent, too. The patio dining is great. They had igloos the last few winters; hope they continue the practice. Dining room can be a little crowded. Unless you really like bagpipes, I'd avoid St. Patrick's week, though. Very festive, but really, really loud. read more

We went there for lunch and walked in around 1 PM on a weekday. No one at all dining, much less a hostess. My son went back into the kitchen and was yelling for someone to come out, and the lady was three feet from him. He noticed that the vent hoods looked like they had not been cleaned in years and the kitchen was filthy. (He worked in the restaurant business for a few years) We were finally seated and ordered the Reuben egg rolls. Not good at all, tasted like they were cooked in a year old vat of oil. Now that took a half of an hour. My wife and both ordered the smaller Hackney burger, and no joke, It was no bigger than a silver dollar. I exclaimed to the waiter, "Is this a JOKE? Wheres the beef? He said they shrink when cooked. I sent mine back and ate nothing. My son went to use the restroom and when he came back he said one of the staff from the kitchen used the urinal and never washed his hands. He did not eat his food. We will never go back. Hackney's is an 80 plus year family local establishment that we need and want to succeed but it needs help. Some people might call the decor country house charm, I say it's run down frat house. When was this place updated? The staff is very friendly and young. We were a party of 8 with many kids. We opened with the famous onion ring loaf which was bland. It needed something, not sure what, maybe salt. Our server was very helpful and suggested all the kids order from the kids menu. We have some teenagers though that prefer the adult menu. Overall, the food was very bad. Hamburgers came out over cooked or undercooked. When a 13 year old boy say his cheeseburger was terrible, that's bad. Family style fries were luke warm and bland. Kids all got a small (I mean very small ) scoop of ice cream which was enjoyable. Someone needs to take a step back and take a good look at the decor and food. Every town has one of these old dinosaurs that people keep coming back ( I came here as a kid). I don't get it given the results and cost of experience. read more

We are visiting family in Chicago-Wilmette and when I said I was in the mood for a burger, the response was Hackney's on Harms. So we went - and it was as if we weren't in Chicago anymore. The setting outside was picturesque with large trees intersecting the eating area. It all starts with 'the Brick'.....a delicately compressed brick of perfectly sliced fried onions - with thin strips wrapped around the savory innards of the onion. It was as unique as it was delicious. We then moved on to the main course, the Famous Hackneyburger. I had mine with cheddar cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and lots (and lots) of ketchup. The burger tasted great, but needed more seasoning and I would have preferred if it had a crisper, or charred exterior which might have sealed in more of the juice. My boyfriend and I came to Hackey's after a dance recital in the area and we're happy to be seated right away on the patio. Service was prompt and it was cool to see that they rolled things in on a cart from the nearby kitchen. The patio was really nice (aside from the plastic chairs) and everything went smoothly. We do wish that our waitress would have been just a bit more attentive with drinks and such, but otherwise great. We both ordered burgers and an onion loaf which were delicious. We then had some ice cream to finish off the meal which was probably a bit too much, but great nonetheless. Will be returning to this location on a nice summer night. read more

Hackneys Circuses the out door domes were cool. My first experience in a dome. Amazing how they are so resourceful. Service was very pleasant but hard to find served through the dome. Onion stack was good no salt on it which is better for you . I ordered a quarter pound Hackney burger medium rare the meat was good it was unsalted I would have love the bun toasted it came with a huge amount of lettuce and a tomato but no pickle they brought one plate of french fries for us my friend had vegan burger and the fries were cold I asked for hot fries they brought me more fries that looked like they double fryer it by appearance of color , unfortunately those were not hot either . It was interesting eating in our heated dome and the history . The food was not that great. It's been about 30 years since I was at Hackneys ( lake Zurich ) Kind of nostalgic Nowdays we have incredible burgers . This is an old school joint in the burbs that I probably go to 1-2 times a year: for The Doctor's birthday and for Daddy-O's birthday (The Doctor's dad). The interior of the restaurant is dated but clean. For me, it feels like I have stepped back into a time machine and entered a supper club, except for the flat screen TVs. The times we have been there, it is an older crowd, not many kids. There is an outdoor seating area, but we have never sat there. It looks inviting, but there has always been a wait to eat there and I don't do long waits. The food is solid: burgers are good, the fries are hot, but reviewer Matthew K (Lincoln Square) summed it up: "They have fresh beef cooked to a medium rare; they will gladly place plate after plate of freshly fried fries in front of you. The cole slaw is delicious. This just doesn't stand out or make it destination worthy." For the record, the coleslaw is good, but not KFC good (love that stuff). If your party all order sandwiches with fries, they bring out one plate for the table, with the concept of unlimited fries. I would prefer to have my own fries on my plate instead of sharing or having to wait for fresh ones to come out, but that is how they run the show. I do enjoy the times and food when I am there with the family, but it is not a place I would just pick up and drive to for a meal. I do think some of the food is overpriced ($13.95 for potato skins), but I will give them four stars for having splits of bubbles and Reuben egg rolls. Those egg rolls could almost make me drive out there, but I can get those at Hawkeye's on Taylor's in Chicago. I do like the burgers and stick to those. Made the mistake of ordering a beef sandwich. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't work $14 (at the time). For my money, the burgers are the way to go. They are of a decent size and are tasty. The atmosphere here gets 4 stars but the food is just average. My boyfriend is from Chicago and he took me here for lunch after our workout Saturday. I loved their patio! They had beautiful plants and an outdoor bar that had great mimosas. The food menu is pretty basic- sandwiches, salads, soups, etc. I had the grilled chicken wrap and it was tasty but nothing super special. Jamie said his burger was good and I believe that is what they are known for. I suggest going for mimosas or sangria and maybe just getting some appetizers. They do have bottomless fries if that is your thing :) read more

The service was good. Food was just okay. Our group started with the onion loaf, which was just average.. We ordered the "famous" Hackney burger on dark rye. The burger was bland and nothing special. The dark rye was good but did not hold up and turned to mush. We also ordered a patty melt, pretty much the same as the hackney burger but the dark rye held up a little better as it was grilled. In addition to the burgers we also had salad with grilled chicken. The salads were again, just okay. The atmosphere was old school rustic, which was nice. Waited twenty minutes for someone to acknowledge our existence. Told my wife we were leaving then suddenly a waitress came over to take our appetizer orders to lock us in. The food took nearly an hour to come out and it was bland, cold and poorly cooked. I ordered a medium rare burger but it came out well done. Wife ordered a strawberry spinach salad and they didn't even out the hardboiled egg in it. A disaster of a meal. Will never go back to this place. Picked up carry out from here last night. Burgers, patty melts and onion loaf. Burgers were dried out gray pieces of meat. The onion loaf was packaged in a paper box and the grease leaked out of the plastic bag and onto my pants, ruining them with grease stains. I just got off the phone with the owner, Mary Welch, who accused me of lying about it! I even went right back to the restaurant an hour after we ate the food to show the manager what had happened. The pants were $100. Ms. Welch "conducted" her own experiment to try to duplicate what happened to me, and since it didn't happen in her experiment, she inferred I was lying about it! I was offered $50 for the pants, and before I could give her my information about where to send it, she ended the conversation. I called back and she is now refusing to give me anything! Hackney's on Harms Rd. is a wonderful little restaurant for a good meal with the family. It's just a much more condensed version with a smaller sized restaurant and menu than the one on Lake Ave. It is also very casual too. When we got there last night around 7pm which is a little late for dinner it was still very crowded. We waited about 15 min to be seated. There seemed to be alot of regulars who dine here. I would say if you came for a first time, you might be confused like I was of what the draw is. The atmosphere is quaint and seats are very close together, borderline too close. The food was actually pretty good, and I would say it reminded me of diner food. Not amazing but consistent and homey. Sometimes that's just what people are in the mood for like we were. The service was very good. Our waitress was on top of everything and we never ran out of drinks. Everyone was satisfied with what they got too. When the weather gets nice I was told there is outdoor seating available. I would go back again to enjoy that! read more

My favorite outdoor dining patio, I've been coming here since I was a child. We enjoy all the time-honored Hackney favorites, plus the ambiance of a leafy, European-like setting during the day, and a sparkling forest during the night. Our favorites are the french fried onions (1/4 brick is plenty for two of us), the Reuben, Patty Melt, Fish & Chips, and of course the Hackneyburger served with bottomless fries. We also like to take a seat at the bar, either before or after dinner on the patio, while we chat and watch an event on one of the TVs. It has a small, friendly neighborhood tavern-type vibe. We did just this the weekend of the Kentucky Derby, watching the race and chatting with other patrons and the bartender, then repairing to the patio for a relaxing dinner on a lovely spring evening. The servers are always friendly and accommodating, and the bartender makes you feel like a long-lost friend. read more

I like the slower pace here compared to the Lake street location. It's a much smaller building and that alone slows things down. It does get nutty when the large shady patio is open and I'm amazed that the tiny kitchen can deliver meals to all those tables in a timely matter. Nearly every time I order the famous Hackneyburger with cheese on dark rye with grilled onions added. Delicious. It's always cooked perfectly and the fries that come with are always hot, plus the coleslaw is one of the best around. They think their Rueben is as good as their burger but don't believe that hype. You can get a better one at nearly every deli around. Daily specials. The burger menu was expanded a few years ago. For the lighter eaters you can get a 4oz burger instead of the 8oz. They have a stuffed burger and quite a few other choices. Very good corned beef and cabbage and I'm told the salads are good as well. A couple complaints are the bathrooms are super tiny and there's almost always a wait as only one person at a time can fit in there. I think the burgers here are a buck less than Lake st but they're still a couple bucks to much. read more

They have changed with the times and have adjusted their menus to include gluten free and current health options. A couple things that have not changed- great onion loaf and super burger. I went here today and sat in an igloo on a day that was 42 degrees. It was comfortably warm in the igloo as there was a space heater set to 60 degrees. I was with three friends and we were able to spread out in the igloo. I felt like they took COVID seriously. The igloo did have a door that was left unzipped and two windows, one which was left open. I ordered the chicken and dumpling soup which was tasty. I also ordered a half order of crispy onion rings, which was a nice portion and had plenty of onion rings to share with my friend. The service was good. The waitress stayed outside the igloo and would give us our drinks through the window. This is one of the few restaurants in the area that I know of that has a heated igloo while indoor dining is banned. read more

My gal pal whisked me away to this Hackney's on a relatively warm autumn Saturday afternoon. At first I was wondering where the heck she was driving me, as we were seemingly heading deep into the woods as we turned off a busy street. We wound up on quiet Harms Road in Glenview, and the spacious outdoor seating area of this location has the feel of someone's cozy woodsy backyard. We sat next to a tree with chirping birds, and a chipmunk popped in and out of some bushes, adding to the pleasant casualness of the setting. Everyone must order the onion loaf, basically a heap of French fried onion strings (definitely go with someone who likes onion rings, lest you miss out on the experience). Their Oktoberfest menu was featured, so I went with the bratwurst plate with two plump bratwurst, plus tasty red cabbage and German-style scalloped potatoes. I washed it down with a Hofbrauhaus Oktoberfest beer. My dining mate ordered the reuben and had enough for leftovers. Neither of us had room for the apple streudel though. There is also an outdoor kids' play area so they can work off the calories. While the food at Hackney's was pretty good, the aspect of "sitting in the backyard" definitely enhanced the overall experience. read more

hackney's is an old school kind of restaurant that has been in this location forever. we decided to have lunch there because the weather was fantastic for eating outdoors. the menu itself has probably been the same forever as well, so my BH ordered the hackneyburger which came with fries and coleslaw. no pickle. i ordered a salad to start--with vinegar and oil dressing. the vinegar had a bug floating in it which totally changed my appetite. the server was apologetic and took the salad off the check but the damage was done. ice tea was refilled and outdoor seating was the best part of the meal. doubtful we'll return. read more
