Six years ago I pretty much walked away from a head-on collision, I consider myself very lucky. My airbag likely saved me from serious injury, but did leave me with a concussion and a deviated septum (not known at the time). The aftereffects of the accident along with some preexisting sinus problems left me with a multitude of problems that got progressively worse: chronic sinus infections, frequent headaches and migraines, severe sinus pain and congestion, trouble concentrating, uncontrolled asthma, sleep issues, and difficulty breathing through my nose. A few years after the accident I had my first ENT visit and the guy didn't do very much to sell me on the idea that this surgery would improve my life, so I passed. It still irks me to know I could have been feeling like a new person long ago. By the time I saw Dr. Kern, my monthly Sudafed requirement rivaled that of a meth dealer. I liked Dr. Kern right off the bat, he's very personable and rather than lead with my surgical options, he first listened to my sinus issues and reviewed nonsurgical options that might work for me. Unfortunately, it only took a brief exam (including cat-scan) to confirm surgery would be my best option if I wanted significant long-term improvement. My surgery had to be delayed one year after I first met with Dr. Kern; my grad school insurance denied my surgery despite being medically necessary (and not cosmetic)! ::shakes angry fist at insurance bastards:: One year later, I had insurance that covered the procedure and was rearing to go under the knife. Not only had my problems worsened 50% in a year, but when you know there's something out there that will make you feel whole again, the waiting can be torture. Dr. Kern is a bit of a stickler, he has a thorough pre and post surgery protocol, which included medicines, vitamins and supplements I had to stop taking 2 weeks before and after surgery. He also required I take a minimum of one week off of work and use a specific brand of OTC sinus rinse to keep the area clean and hydrated. I won't get into details of my procedure, but the surgery was no walk in the park; it knocked me on my ass harder than I anticipated. However, I don't regret it one bit; a week after my surgery the splints, stitches and other stuff were removed and I was giddy that I could actually breathe through my nose. It's been nearly three months and I have had almost no sinus pressure or pain, headaches, and my asthma is more controlled than it's been in 6 years. I've also only taken about 8 of those little red magic pills in the last 3 months, pre-surgery that was more like a daily dose, and my Kleenex usage has dropped off considerably (sorry Kimberly-Clark). Both of my post op visits have confirmed that my surgery went beautifully; I wouldn't hesitate to refer anyone with sinus issues to Dr. Kern, he and his staff are amazing.

In the months since surgery, I've had several follow-up visits with Dr. Siegel. The staff at Midwest ENT is terrific; clearly, they're a reflection of how Dr. Siegel practices medicine. I would NOT recommend him or this office if you are looking for a medical specialist to address your ENT concerns with genuine care unless you are ready to deal with unethical billing practices, a misleading physician, and some (not all) unresponsive/conceding staff. Before seeing Dr. Dixon, I checked with my insurance provider to ensure my visit would be covered. Before this, I had contacted his office directly and received a curt and annoyed response from whoever picked up my call to my initial questions about setting up an appointment and their insurance partners. This definitely should've been the first red flag, but I continued making the appointment because I was honestly interested in working with a Black physician if I could. So where did things go left? Well, when I arrived for my initial visit 30 minutes early, I was left waiting in the waiting room for almost an hour after checking in and paying my co-pay. When I finally saw Dr. Dixon, I shared my reasons for the visit and prior experience years before working with an ENT. He then enthusiastically laid out how this visit would go, sharing that during the first visit, nothing much would happen, but in my future visits, we would work together to explore some of the things I shared to help improve my concerns. I was then asked to sign a document and told, "This is just a part of the initial visit and to look with this camera, but we're not doing anything today, so don't be concerned." And boy was that a BIG LIE! Two weeks later, I woke up on Saturday morning to a bill that had been texted to my phone from Dr. Dixon's office for a few hundred dollars. Now, imagine the shock that would come with seeing this, after paying your co-pay upfront and being reassured several times during the visit as well as before and after some random form is abruptly presented to you by your doctor that "nothing was going to be done today, this is just a part of the initial visit." So when I called later to figure out where the charge was coming from, I learned that the paper I had signed after Dr. Dixon request to use this camera to look in my nose for less than 2 minutes as "just a part of the initial visit" was actually now an unexpected bill of $306.31. My concern with Dr. Dixon's practice and certain members of his office team is that when I conveyed what had been communicated with me by Dr. Dixon himself during that visit, and questioned why the charge had been coded separate from the initial visit and the ethics of that decision, I never received a clear answer, there was NO attempt to be accountable for Dr. Dixon's mistakenly or unmistakably misleading information regarding the form he presented, and none of my calls requesting the opportunity to speak with someone in billing about my concerns were ever returned. So I'm writing this because I DO NOT WANT anybody to ever have this experience. It's not right, it's unethical, and it's hurtful. When you go to see a doctor, you are putting trust in the provider to help you, NOT TO HURT YOU mentally, emotionally, and financially. I'm disappointed with my experience visiting Dr.Dixon's practice and will not be returning. And if you made it this far in this review, I'd encourage you to stay away too.

One peculiar detail about my postop visit with James Wang MD PhD: he laughed into my face when he realized what damage he had done to my health with his rookie surgical skills and medically unnecessary interventions... (The next available appointment was not for another six weeks or so.) He suggested an Xray, which we did the same day, and it showed swollen adenoids which led to his suggestion that they be removed. Last week was the surgery and it went very well. Dr. Rastatter is a skilled surgeon and the procedure took almost exactly as long as expected (about 25 minutes). I'm really glad that I had Dr. Rastatter to care for my little one, since although I knew it was a routine and fairly minor surgery, having my one year old undergo surgery and begin away from her for that time was still hard. If you have a choice of ENT to visit, I'd highly recommend him.

Dr Rastatter took one look in her nose and suggested that she did indeed need them removed since they were blocking about 90% of her nose. Poor baby! The following month we were one of the first patients in the new Children's Hospital. My 19 month old didn't really know what was going on, but I was a nervous mess since she'd never been under anesthesia before. In fact, she'd never even been on antibiotics or anything before! Fortunately, Dr Rastatter made sure the procedure was as painless as possible (for both me and my little one). The entire procedure took no longer than 30 minutes and I'll admit I had a slight heart attack when my phone rang halfway thru the surgery and it was the Dr himself calling. He reassured my husband right away that everything was going well, but inquired if we wanted to also remove our daughter's tonsils since they looked much bigger than when she had been his office the month earlier. We asked for his expert opinion and he said if it was his own kid (and he has a little one close in age) he'd wait to see if they shrink on their own since tonsil removal can be a bit surgery for such a little one. We took him up on his advice and asked him to remove just the adenoids (as originally planned). Minutes later he came out and informed us that everything had gone well...and our little one was waiting in recovery for us. She was a little groggy for the rest of the day, but was running around and completely back to normal by the very next morning. Dr Rastatter's office also called a few times over the next few weeks to check-up on her. Most importantly I've noticed a big improvement in my daughter's health since the surgery. She can breathe thru her nose again, is sleeping amazingly well (although she was always a pretty good sleeper), isn't breathing thru her mouth as heavily and has had fewer colds. I' glad we went thru with the surgery and even more thrilled that we found such a fantastic pediatric ENT to do it! I'm do hoping her tonsils shrink on their own, but if she does end up having to get them removed we'll be repeat patients of Dr Rastatter's.
