We went upstairs to watch the hockey game with a small group of people... And have some drinks. One bartender about 40 people watching the game. Drinks were pretty light on the alcohol unfortunately. The owner came up and gave us a couple shots to make up for it. Beer selections, kind of mid. Lots of energy, lots of screens, huge bar. The highlight is the restroom... With no door, and a one-way mirror so that you can keep your eye on the screen and your friends while you use the urinal. LOL read more

Wifey and I came here during a trip to the Jimmy Stewart museum. Stromboli was fantastic and had a wonderful crunch to the crust. Wings were massive and the smartie sauce on the wings was delicious. Great college town bar with drunk specials. They have seasonal drink menus which I always enjoy. This time I got the cranberry margarita off their seasonal menu, I wouldn't get it again. From the appetizer of Chili Cheese Fries which is enough for 4 to eat. The Pretzels and Beer Cheese (Great pretzels but the Cheese is addictive). Bourbon BBQ sauce on the wings is a shut the front door type of glaze good on anything with a sweet BBQ flavor that when put with Beef ( Sandwich that I could only eat half) or Wings/ Chicken it makes you want more. More you say, well the bar scene at this Indiana spot is amazing with a wrap around that looks like an old day pub spot. It was a Sunday afternoon in April. Walking into Culpeppers, you are greeted by a Fridays/Cheers theme, unrelated crap all up on the walls to look cool. The patrons were casual, tshirts and jeans types. The employees were indistinguishable in their casual attire.There's a couple bars and a couple dining rooms and I think a pool table upstairs. There was 4 of us and we sat ourselves, and then waited. ... ...and waited... Even as plenty of staff wandered about no one seemed to want to wait on us. They would look at us out of the corners of their eyes as they moved about.(-1) We finally pretty much forced a server to get our drink order at least. She said Domestic pitchers were $5 and change and Imported Pitchers were $7 and change. Not a bad deal, for $5 I'm getting a pitcher of Dogfish Head 60 Minute and was informed after I ordered that Dogfish was an Import. I said, well actually the brewery was in Delaware, a state connected to Pennsylvania. She said Culpeppers considers all craft brews "Imported", which in our fair Commonwealth is ILLEGAL.! (-1) Just call it "Premium" pitchers, easy fix. She passed off our drink orders to someone else and then we waited some more. For the amount of staff milling about and the fact that there was only 3 tables seated when we got there, it was pretty pathetic.(-1) A 6 top sat down at the next table after us and somehow ordered before us?(-1) Wake me when it's time to order..... Oh we can order now? Do you have any suggestions, Miss Server? Yeah, just get a burger. We asked if they were big and she demonstrated a burger the size of a cookie with her hands. We all laughed. I ordered the Buffalo Bill Chicken sandwich for $8 that came with no sides. Then guess what we did? Now the place is getting a little busier, still no food and the other guys can't get drink refills. Thats money lost, right there. The 6 tops food came, so we were hopeful ours was soon and it was about another 10 minutes. I mean we are talking over an hour now without food and the others only one drink.. Oh, here's your 8 dollar Buffalo chicken sandwich. 1 frozen chicken breast, some Buffalo sauce on a roll.(-1)hahahahaahahahahaha I guess they think a plate of their frozen seasoned fries are a feature worth paying extra for. Nah. If you want premium prices, I want premium product. We've been going here for 8 years or so - more frequently when we were students at IUP, but I still can't complain myself (I have heard not-so-great things from others). Our go-to menu items are the spinach artichoke dip - I must say it is probably THE best spin dip I've ever had and I pretty much compare every other spin dip at every other restaurant to this one. I love the tomatoes on top, and I haven't really been able to find the warm soft pita anywhere else. This is probably the best and one of the only great things Culpepper's has. My husband always goes for the Big Ben sandwich, to which he is never dissapointed. My entree always changes, and I'm never as pleased with my meal as with the spin dip. ::shrug:: I vaguely recall being forever disappointed with the salad. The wings are good, but nothing to rant about. We always liked the pina coladas too - but I'm pretty sure it's from a mix, so it's probably only nostalgia that keeps us coming back to those. read more

Had a tough, over cooked blacked blue burger with hand cut fries that resembled the texture of pasta- damp and limp and probably underdone and left out for 20 minutes. What Happened?? I ordered this many many times last year. I travel this way for work and actually look forward to having this burger and fresh cut fries. You know, the fresh crispy fries that soak up malt vinegar that you can't stop eating? What a disappointment. I won't be back. I suggest you do the same at least until they get a new cook. I would give 0 stars if I could. The bartenders act like you're being a nuisance to them and messing up their plans (whether it's Monday or a Friday). They close well before 2 almost every night. Last call has been at 12:30 or 1:00 multiple times, even tho they clearly state their business hours as 2 AM. When they decide they want to leave after they call last call, they'll tell you to get the fuck out and chug your drink. Shitty bartenders. I ordered wings here last year and a few of them were undercooked. The BBQ sauce was average. Has no idea what "capacity" means. H.B. Culpeppers has been an Indiana staple since the 80s. The majority of the customers go there for their legendary long islands, which are only $2 on weekends during specials (ten to midnight). Their other drink worth noting is a Pink Lady, a sweet cocktail that tastes like Powerade. It's only $3 during specials. Way better option than a vodka cranberry! Also, they have a ton of different beers on draft, which also go on special. Their selection is always rotating, but the southern tier beers are some of my favorites! When I eat at culps, I usually get a burger. Their Carolina burger is one of my all time favorites. Sometimes I just stop in for a cup of soup! My favorite soup (which they rotate daily) is the roasted red pepper and smoked Gouda--paired with a grilled cheese!! Also, their Parmesan ranch wings are some of the best I've had--or if I'm feeling like boneless wings, get the sweet chili Siracha! The best part about culps are the employees and management that make it great. Lindsey and adriane are two of their veteran bartenders---ask for a Bloody Mary from either of them and you won't be disappointed!! A lot of college kids go here to drink. Its one of the only bars in the area where their bartenders use professional bottle toppers to pour their liquor, so you know you're getting your money's worth. Also, the wait for a drink when it's packed is usually no more than a few minutes, which is great compared to the 30+ minutes you can wait at other packed places. I like to get a drink at the downstairs bar before going upstairs. All in all, culps is ALWAYS the best place to go! Will be back soon for more good food and drinks. read more

I ate here for the first time about two weeks ago. I had a good crispy chicken salad. Whole chicken breast, feta, bacon, greens. I went back yesterday and ordered the same thing. When it came out, the whole chicken breast was replaced by that chopped and formed "chicken" you get on a $1 sandwich at McDonald's. I promptly picked it off because I don't consider that food. The waiter seemed bemused and offered an apology and merely stated: "sorry, it's different now." It's not the server's fault. Still, if the management of HB Culpepper's is reading this: Please do not completely alter a menu item to make it a lot cheaper to produce. If we want to eat that kind of garbage, we'd go to McDonald's and order from the dollar menu. To advertise it on the menu as the same dish (for $9) is unethical. read more

As far as the bar goes it's not bad. No entertainment though. We stopped for lunch yesterday and had a decent experience. I really enjoyed the dining areas. Huge amounts of space with that local sports bar feel. I'm sure this is a great big college party on the weekends (the bathrooms showed much evidence of that - gross). The football game was on, it was not crowded. Our server was friendly and adorable and almost too attentive. They had burger platters specials, and ours were fine. Not the best burger of my life, but nothing bad about it. Went there last night to get a few drinks and as the bartender was making my drink she had put so much ice in that it was over the rim of the cup. I asked her to please take some of the ice out and she said rudely "Well I hope you know you're just getting more soda then." The building itself has much character, our food was fair, but the service and "acting manager" were below standard. I can't even fault our waitress. She was obviously not trained properly and didn't seem to know anything about the menu, drink specials, etc. We were given the wrong check and should have just paid and left. Being the honest people we are we informed our waitress, because she obviously was having some struggles. She came back with a check that charged us full price for the drink special draft beer and $10 for French fries that we were told came with our sandwiches (I asked if the fries were included when we ordered just to make sure). The "acting manager" said she would correct the bill errors. She came back 5 minutes later and said she would not correct the bill and asked if that was ok? I didn't even know what to say? I didn't want to make our guests we were dining with uncomfortable, so I dropped it and paid. I would never eat here again and my hope is someone would come in and properly manage this place. read more

My son goes to Iup and this was our first trip to grab a bite here. It wasn't crowded but we sat ten minutes before anyone approached us for our drink order. I sat another ten waiting for my beer only to be told they sold the last bottle. Ordered another brand of beer and waited another ten minutes. We got the orders, mine being a burger, fries and coleslaw. I literally had one tablespoon of Cole slaw on my plate. It was hidden under the fries. My son ordered the fajitas and they forgot the tortillas. I had to ask for them. Overall a pretty lousy experience here and would not recommend this place. I'm not understanding the reviews on here. Did I go on a day where everyone working clearly hated their jobs? Terrible! read more

Despite enjoying this bar for many years I believe the quality of service is steadily declining. I can't help but think that the management is trying its hardest to squeeze just one more dime out of it's customer on a daily basis. Some examples of why I rated it a 1/5: I don't believe they ever change their kegs. My friend and I went in last week and got a Bud Light draft, it tasted horrible and was flat so we switched to Yeungling. The Yeungling was also "old" tasting but not as bad as the Bud Light. I chalked that up to being an honest mistake. But a week after we experienced this we went back for specials and the Bud Light had the same "old" flat taste and the Yeungling was worse than the week before. My girlfriend took her beer up to inform the bartenders that the beer didn't taste right and asked for a different type of beer. She was met with some attitude from the bartenders and, to top it off, the Miller Light she received instead was worse tasting than the Bud Light she turned in. To me this is just a sign of poor business practices and an extremely cheap owner. They have 3 pool tables but none of them are in decent condition. Balls get jammed, the felt is beat up and stained, the batteries in the monetary devices on the tables are almost completely dead, and the bar is completely out of pool chalk. Another downfall of their pool tables is, despite being beat up and unreliable, they charge $1.25 per game. The electronic pay on the tables state that it's 5 games for $5 but everytime I put $5 in the table I only get 4 games. The men's bathroom for the upstairs bar is completely disgusting and run down, the urinals are broken in and the smell coming from them suggests that they are never cleaned. The service as of late has been completely horrendous. We went in for the bar specials and basically once the specials were over they told us last call and said we couldn't play pool anymore. It was 12:20. I never had such rude and inconsiderate service at any other bar ever. Granted the bar was quite dead but as paying customers (who tipped quite well) we should've been able to play a few more pool games after specials were over. To sum it all up, I used to be a big fan of Culpeppers but it's not the same place as it used to be. Even though they do have some decent specials I will not be going back there anytime soon. Personally I would rather spend a little more money to get better beer and much better service than save the couple extra bucks at Culps. read more

So after a gruesome disc golf match me and fellow disc golfers were exhausted. We came in this fine establishment which serves as a beacon on the hill to Indiana. We were stunned by Th courtesy and timely service of the waitress We ordered the three way appetizer (sampler) and each had a sandwich of our liking. At one point I broke a glass and was ashamed , however, the waitress was wonderful and nurturing as she quickly replaced my drink at no charge. But seriously , after a round of disc golf this is the place to go to wet your whistle and get your 3 way platter. I recommend the Buffalo Bill sandwich and please no sweet potato fries... You get chips with your sandwich. I don't even like Ruffles chips (hell they might be a generic ) but the astounding service makes up for this great disappointment. I like this place because the BAR is so cool. Its it your quintessential Pub. Had lunch there and the staff was slim but the place was not busy. We ate a Black & Blue burger and a Ruben. Both were tasty and cooked well. The burger was not overcooked and I am always a fan of a toasted bun. The Ruben was corned beef on toasted rye and was served with thousand island dressing and swiss cheese; classic and good. Now... I'm not expecting amazing eats here, after all its is bar/pub/restaurant so ...it is what it is. In saying that, the food was pretty good and our Martini's were worth it. Their prices are very affordable and you get a decent amount of food. I have been here a dozen or so times and food here, it is quite consistent and good, not fantastic but good. Put it this way, I never had to send anything back or felt I got ripped off Service could be better, but I think that is what you get when you hire "barely adults" as your wait staff. read more

We were here for the British car show sponsored by the Roadster Factory. We have been coming to this show for years, and we have eaten at Culpeppers a number of times. We always seem to come back, the atmosphere is very nice, plenty of different beer choices, and the food is always very good. Pizza is delicious. I wish that they would take up the new trend of being completely non-smoking. I have to go home and shower immediately after spending any time in the upstairs bar.
