As a new business…read morecustomer, James Associates filed my corporate federal and state tax returns so late that I was assessed over $2000 in penalties and interest. My W-2's were also provided so late that I had to file for an extension. The IRS code on the late issuance of W-2 forms allows for much higher penalties had they been informed of the late W-2 issuance. The late payment of the $456 MA corporate tax I incurred could have been avoided by informing me that the payment was due in March rather than waiting until October to tell me it was due. For reasons that are still not completely clear to me, after speaking with people in the MA DOR corporate and personal tax offices, I was informed that I would be required to file an additional Mass corporate return for the next year even though my returns were marked final indicating that I was ceasing business operations at year's end. When I mentioned this to James Associates they confirmed that I would need to file again for the following year even though I had clearly stated verbally and in writing well before the due dates that I intended to cease doing business in the current filing year. Because the Mass corporate return is derivative of the federal return I was obligated to do an additional federal and state return for the following year even though the IRS had confirmed that no additional return would be necessary. Realizing in March that James Associates was not going to issue my W-2 or have my corporate return completed in time to for me to estimate my personal tax liability, I dropped off a letter in early March requesting assistance on estimating my personal tax liability so I could avoid underpayment penalties. I got no response so I did my own W-2 and federal 1120S and provided those forms to H&R Block so they could estimate my tax liability. I also submitted my versions of the W-2 and 1120S forms to James Associates in the hope that it would expedite their completion of the filings. The filings were made 7 months later in the last week of the extension period for personal tax returns. The W-2 and 1120S filed were identical, from a tax perspective, to the versions of the forms that I had provided in March. Having incurred a significant number of business expenses in the year after closure I spoke to an IRS representative who informed me that the IRS would accept corporate expenses incurred after closure of the business as offsetting personal income. But they qualified this by saying I should consult with a tax professional. Reluctantly I called James Associates and asked if Rich James was in. The receptionist said he was and asked who was calling. I identified myself and waited much longer than it should have taken to transfer my call. The receptionist finally returned and informed me Rich was not in although she thought he was. I informed her that I had been advised by the IRS to talk to a tax professional regarding business expenses incurred after business closure related to my personal return and that James Associates was familiar with all of the information pertinent to this question. I never got a call back. Fortunately I was able to find a Tax office within walking distance of Davis Square who freely gave me advice on the above as well as how to get the business closed in the eyes of the MA DOR and on how to possibly receive an abatement on one of the penalties I was assessed. Finally I reached out to a friend who is a member of the Mass Bar Association who worked in his father's accounting firm when he was young. He advised me to request that James Associates provide me with information regarding their liability insurance policy so I could make a claim against it for the penalties and extra expenses incurred. I submitted this request in writing. After waiting several months with no response I finally dropped off a letter documenting my dissatisfaction and giving James Associates a chance to respond before I documented my experience on Yelp. Predictably I got no response.

If I could give ZERO stars, I would…read more First of all, this address is wrong- they DO NOT have an office in Boston. Secondly, DO NOT TRUST THEM. I truly have no words for the service we got (but also I won't shut up about it bc if I can save someone else the hassle, I will). We hired a CPA this year bc of some issues with our state tax withholding due to moving across states. 1) From the get go, I felt funny about them because I knew there were certain info that would be needed (but they didn't take it even when I offered). Due to a HR mishap with my job, my state taxes were taken from NY (and not from MA). They never asked for more specific info (pay stubs for example) to rectify the taxes. I repeatedly asked the person assigned to us to reiterate the issue to us so that we knew she understood what needed to be fixed, and she couldn't. But they have such good reviews, so I should trust the right?! 2) Due to the move, my husband had two W-2's- one from NY and one from MA. We accidentally forgot to upload the NY W-2 (that's on us). BUT instead of asking for it, they counted the MA W-2 for NY as well. The outcome was that we now owe thousands in taxes due to the income being counted twice! 3) AND FOR THE CHERRY ON TOP- THEY FILED WITHOUT OUR CONSENT. The wrong version, where we owe thousands. And then didn't tell us. We only found out bc we got a letter from the IRS. And then they took their sweet time responding to us about amending, not that we trust them to even do the amendment correctly. And when we requested a refund, they refused and instead offered money off our next service- AS IF. We had to file fraud via our credit card and point out that what they did was ILLEGAL to get our money back.

I first connected with them through a personal connection and expected everything to go smoothly. For context, I've always done my own taxes without issues, but this year we have across state taxes so it's a bit more complicated and we decided to bite the bullet and use a tax professional. Dimov was initially very responsive and seemed exceptionally professional. HOWEVER, that turned 180 degrees as soon as we paid the fees and signed the contract. It was incredibly difficult to get a hold of anyone. They initially promised use that our taxes would be done before the 4/15 deadline. And then it's RADIO-SILENCE until 4/15. Even though I emailed them almost weekly since mid-March asking for an update. Absolutely NO RESPONSE. And then on 4/15, after we desperately called multiple times, someone responded and told us that there's been a delay and they have already filed for a tax extension for us. The entire day was extremely stressful for us as we were at work and worried about our taxes being late. Then, you would expect things to get better, but no. I continued to email them for updates almost weekly, and it's essentially radio-silent until mid-June, when they presented us with a draft return. The draft returns did not spell my name correctly and had several obvious typos. After the returns were filled, we eventually received a penalty for health insurance coverage in one of the states. We realized it's because we only provided proof for 6 months out of the year to Dimov. But since we are hiring a supposed "professional", I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to remind us, "hey, you only provided 6-months of insurance proof, this will invoke a penalty. Do you have proof for the rest of the year?" Nope, nothing like that. They just let us take a penalty. If you expect timely service, Dimov will NOT provide it. If you expect professional responses, Dimov will be radio-silent. If you expect to save money, Dimov does not care. Please avoid this service at all cost. You're better off doing your own taxes than spending money on them. You will probably end up more stress, spend more time, and get less refunds. AVOID AT ALL COST!
