Guzzu Bento-ya is a Japanese bento specialty shop in Downtown LA (approximately two blocks away from ROW DTLA) and is owned by the same restaurant group as Mo-Mo-Paradise. The goal for the shop is recreating the experience of a Japanese train station bento lunch box. This spot was ranked #26 in Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in LA County in 2023 and #9 in 2024. I first discovered Guzzu Bento-ya at the Belly Laughs Comedy and Food Festival in 2025 and recently decided to visit this brick-and-mortar location. [Parking]: Plenty of parking spots available right in front of the shop. [Menu]: The shop offers Tier 1 Bento (aonori furikake-topped rice, pickled purple cabbage, Tokyo diner potato salad, carrot kinpira, and your choice of protein) and Tier 2 Premium Bento (Tier 1 plus miso-cured egg yolk, fukujinzuke, daigaku imo aka sweet potato, tare-glazed lotus root, broccoli namul, braised fried miso tofu, and grilled zucchini shaped like a leaf). Food: Phenomenal, one of the best bento boxes I've ever had! Their sides are great; not cheap, but it's also a generous amount of food. I usually get the shio koji marinated premium bento box. Ambiance: Nice and cool inside, they have little games to use if you're eating with friends. Service: It's good, but this is the reason I gave them 4/5 stars instead of 5. I'm a frequent buyer; either ordering delivery or pickup online. I just really, really dislike that I cannot reach a person via their phone! Super worth it for 20 dollars for the 2 tier bento. I love the fresh ingredients they use and their well packaged lunches. They also have good parking since it's not a busy area hidden in the fashion/arts district. A side dish I want to high light is their potato egg salad which I really enjoyed and their miso cured egg yolk that paired well with the rice. All their marinated and picked veggies paired really well with the rice. The purple picked veggies were very spicy though. The karage was spicy and crispy. I will say that it was just a little overdone for my liking since there was a bitter taste but that could have been coming from the seasoning so I think next time I'll just get the soy glaze instead. I'm honestly very shocked by how much I liked the curry. I opted for the vegetarian option, called roasted veggie kare, which included onions, carrots, celery, and zucchini. A typical Japanese curry features potatoes and carrots, but there were no potatoes at all. In its place was a surplus of onions. It was too much to the point where I had to throw it away. The food came out hot and fresh and the ratio of curry to rice wasn't bad. I liked that it came with a dollop of potato salad and pickled veggies to cut the strong flavor of the curry. I ordered this via delivery, so this review will be based on that instead of eating at the location, and I am honestly blown away. Even though I didn't eat at the actual shop, the delivery presentation was really well done. I ordered the premium chicken bento, and the presentation was impressive. It comes in a two-tier setup where the chicken and rice are in one section and all the veggies and sides are in another. It felt very high-end for a delivery meal. The chicken was incredibly juicy and flavorful. I really appreciated the sauce they used because it wasn't that overly sweet, generic teriyaki stuff you find at most places. It had a great balance, smoky flavor, and worked so well with the rice and chicken. The sides were just as good as the main course. The veggies were super crisp and fresh. Ordered the Grilled Chicken Bento via UberEats and it took an hour which was understandable since I ordered it at 11:30am. The Grilled Chicken Bento ($21 on Uber Eats & $17 at restaurant) came very neatly prepared in two boxes stacked on top of each other. One box contained rice and grilled chicken and the other box contained a small side of potato salad, pickled purple cabbage, roasted sweet potatoes, crispy lotus roots, broccoli, sliced carrots and cobo, and fried tofu curd. The grilled chicken wasn't as delicious as I was expecting unfortunately. The top of the chicken was slightly too burnt and the inside wasn't as juicy and tender as I was hoping. It was quite dry and disappointing. This was 6/10. The sides were wonderful. The veggies were very fresh and delicious. I especially loved the potato salad and wished it came with more! The crispy lotus root was very good too but it just came with one slice! The roasted sweet potatoes was very sweet and yummy! Delicious bento lunch boxes! My family came by for a little Tokyo adventure and saw this spot online for some amazing bento boxes and decided to take a short drive down Alameda to check it out. Guzzu Bento-ya has some incredible artwork on its walls but also in the surrounding neighborhood. The menu is short and sweet, I got the grilled chicken bento (amaaaaazing) and the BBQ smoky flavor hit the spot. At first I was skeptical since I found this place through an Instagram reel, but I'm really glad I gave it a try. I ordered the wild salmon bento and the pork katsu sando. The salmon bento is the priciest of the bentos, but it's absolutely worth it. I usually prefer my salmon raw, but this one completely changed my mind. The salmon was incredibly moist and soft. The miso-cured egg yolk was rich and flavorful, and the kinpira gobo & carrots paired really well with the salmon and rice. Food+ ambiance+ vibes =20/10 We've been here a few times, even thought of getting catered food here for our wedding, it's that good. This place has the elevated Japanese Bento box, with chill studio Ghibli ambiance. We came in again today and there's a DJ, raffle, and tattoo shop going on.
