can I have a bit of a scam going? We have two ACs and heating we paid $468 for the maintenance coverage. However when the technicians came today it was only for one AC they have to come back again for the second AC and heat, but when they came today, they were charging us $415 to have our AC cleaned technicians were great Cameron and Ada but the company they're kind of ripping people off because they're very anxious and eager to have a tech come out they blow up iPhones or text messages only to find out. Yeah they're going to find something wrong and it's an additional 400 and some dollars don't don't buy the maintenance agreement. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I received a call about renewing my service contract. I reminded the representative that they had yet to address concerns I had called and e-mailed about on multiple occasions, including an e-mail I sent almost 2 weeks prior. She read the email on the phone, was apologetic, and asked if there was anything they could do to make it right. I told her their manager could call me. I never received that call. Below is the the email I sent them: "Good evening, This is my third and final time reaching out before I sign a service agreement with another company. In 2024, I contracted Norfolk Air to replace an HVAC system. My service agreement was to include two maintenance checks per year (before winter and before summer). At the end of last summer, a quarterly pest inspection at my home found moisture in the crawl resulting from possible water pooling around the entrance to the crawlspace. I work for a large real estate investment and property management company and have resources to confirm my pest company's findings. It was determined the drainage for the new HVAC was insufficient for the unit installed, causing the exterior standpipe to overflow, especially in rain. I called Norfolk Air to send a technician to work on an alternative drainage solution. When the technician arrived, he was friendly and looked at the drainage system currently in place and agreed that it was not sufficient drainage for the unit that was installed. Additionally, he said that the type of drainage system that was in place was not something their company serviced as it was outdated. He said he had an idea for a workaround and would draw something up and a technician would work on it during a separate appointment. At the following appointment, a different technician showed up and seemed to have no idea why he was there. He said they didn't service that kind of drain, and I had to explain the situation again and describe the workaround the first technician had proposed. After calling the company and going to get supplies, he installed a long connecting pipe to reroute the water down the side of my house -- where it ended up pooling against my foundation. I was disappointed by his lack of knowledge about the appointment, his inability to execute the proposed workaround, and his attitude when I expressed frustration. Ultimately, the second technician wasn't at fault -- nothing was properly communicated to him. I had to chase Norfolk Air for days to get in touch with a service manager. As someone with extensive knowledge of the real estate industry and the damage moisture can cause to a home's foundation, I wanted answers as to why proper drainage was not handled when my HVAC was installed and why I was paying for a service to remedy what should never have happened. The service manager (Brian, I believe) was rude, condescending, and dismissive. When I told Brian his technician agreed the drainage was insufficient and not even something the company serviced, Brian said the technician shouldn't have told me that. Absolutely shocking. It wasn't until I threatened to terminate my service agreement and leave a bad review about my experience that Brian relented and offered a small concession in exchange for me not leaving a review. I held up my end of the bargain, but since then, Norfolk Air (now Guy Smith Home Services) has made no effort to adhere to the service agreement I had previously made. Nobody has reached out to schedule a routine, bi-yearly maintenance appointment, and nobody has returned my calls. I paid $12,000 for the new HVAC and service agreement ultimately to receive poor customer service and avoidance in return. If this is how Guy Smith Home Services wishes to continue to do business, then I will happily sign a service agreement with another company and write the negative review I should have written long ago. On the evening of 7/26/2025 I came home to my upstairs A/C unit not working - this was about 9 PM. I called several companies for emergency services but no one was available for several days (this was a Saturday evening). I asked my daughter who she used before in an emergency and she gave me the name of Guy Smith (Brian-the tech). Brian said he would be able to come out but it would probably be after 10 PM and he explained the charges-service call, after hours charge and the price of any parts. So far, so good. Brian got to my house about 10:30 PM and very quickly diagnosed the problem as a bad capacitor (his part #T600409 a 35 + 5 Dual Capacitor) on my Goodman Unit (Model #GSZ140241KH). Brian replaced the capacitor and ran tests for the operation, filled out his paperwork on his iPad, took payment, then left. Brian did a SUPERIOR job. Quick, efficient and pleasant to have fix the unit. Zero complaints on the tech or the service. No issue with the service charge or the after hours charge BUT was shocked at the price I was charged for the capacitor-after the fact. I had no clue as to the price of that capacitor. I searched many places for the prices of the official replacement one and nowhere did I see the price for the capacitor over $50. I understand a markup, but I was charged $385.88 for the capacitor alone. I guess maybe $100 to $150 with the markup would have been in line. I stopped by the Guy Smith office on Monday and spoke to the office manager (Antoinette) about my concern and she took a copy of my invoice and said the owner would follow-up. Today is August 13th and I have had ZERO follow-up. I believe I was charged well over $200 (being generous) MORE than I should have and would have at least appreciated a call/email/text from the company. NOTHING. I did read the reviews of the company...a lot good, some bad. Place my review in the "bad" column due to being GOUGED on part pricing in a bad situation. I can't stress enough how awful my experience with this company was. They do horrible work. They sell you equipment you don't need. When you complain, the office manager is full of excuses. When I complained about being sold an entire AC unit when because the technician misdiagnosed the problem I got crickets. TL/DR? Do yourself a favor, call ANYONE else besides Guy Smith I am VERY disappointed. We had a technician come out to diagnose a less than 5 year old heat pump system in our barn that wasn't moving air. This was a few weeks ago when it was getting down into the sub-20's at night. Tech found two problems. First, the fan motor (under manufactures warranty) was dead, plus the wall thermostat was supposedly defective. Was quoted nearly $900 to replace the fan motor plus $500 for the thermostat. Total nearly $1,400, but they would knock off 15% if I signed up for a monthly maintenance program. I had several problems with that quote: first, wanting $900 in labor to replace an easily accessible fan motor. Almost more concerning is wanting $500 to replace a basic thermostat. These things are $50 at a big-box store, and even cheaper at an HVAC supply-house. And they have a half-dozen color coded wires to attach, which takes about 15 minutes. So $500 is crazy. But worse than the cost was the fact that the thermostat had already been replaced with a known working one prior to having this tech come out. If the only issue was the unnecessary thermostat replacement, I could write that off to an incompetent tech. But given the utterly insane labor pricing, I can only assume they (company and/or tech) was trying to take advantage of a homeowner they assumed would pay whatever it took to get the heat back on. I ended up paying another company $200 to replace the fan motor. Saved over $1,100, even counting paying Guy Smith for the diagnosis. read more

Josh came out and was very honest with me that my 22 year old unit wasn't in good shape and they didn't even make the refrigerant any more. I knew I was on borrowed time and made an appointment for Blake to come out and talk about installing a new unit. Blake is just as honest as they come and advised me which one was the best for my house and my budget. I could just tell he was a good guy and I often worry as a single woman that I can be ripped off yet I completely felt comfortable with the entire experience. The tech was incredibly nice & professional. It's a shame he works for Guy Smith Heating & Cooling. I called, & the tech was sent out to do a diagnostic. He told me there was a leak ($89.99). He then said in order to fix it, we need to know where the leak is (over $400.00 for a leak test-wait, isn't that what the diagnostic is for?). He gave me a quote of nearly $5,000 for THE PARTS. Not today, Guy Smith. I called another HVAC place who DID NOT CHARGE for a diagnostic because he could see the leak. Quoted me under $5000 to REPLACE the entire HVAC unit. Geez, talk about price gouging and taking advantage of someone. I will NEVER call nor recommend that company to anyone. My AC was not working at all and after I put in a claim with my home warranty company, they sent a contractor. Based on his diagnosis, the warranty company denied my claim due to so - called " pre-existing conditions ". I was so desperate due to a heat wave that I was willing to pay the tech to repair my AC anyway. After several attempts to get them to come out, they finally admitted that they were unable to repair my Lennox AC. They did, however, refer me to Guy Smith who came out the very next day. Brian examined my system and found that the difficulty was only with a wire which he fixed in a matter of minutes. I am now enjoying a cool house thanks to him. This company is truly the best! Absolutely reliable. Our home was flooding and turns out was due to our HVAC. We gave them a call and within hours they were here diagnosing the problem. They came the very next day (today) early in the morning to get the job done. The Evap Coil had to be cleaned out and a PTRAP needed to be installed. They were able to get the job done quickly. Decided to give them a second chance by having them do a tune up on my heating system. I called Guy Smith because my furnace does not have a filter and there was no air coming out of the Vents. Their guy spent 20 minutes and told me I needed a new condenser and a new outside unit that would cost me $7000.00. Then he handed me a bill for $439. I called another A/C repair company. The came out and cleaned the dirt out of my condenser, fixed my condensation drain and installed a filter. Now my A/C works great and THEIR WHOLE BILL WAS ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS. I am very impressed with Guy Smith Heating and Cooling. My AC wasn't producing much hot air and there were some pretty cold nights in January and February. Due to my job, I was gone a lot, but when I finally called, their customer service was easy to work with and they were able to send a technician out later that day. I received an automated text with the technicians name and an alert when when he was on his way. Jon Shaffer was a professional through and through. As a hands-on guy with minimal HVAC knowledge, I had tons of questions. He didn't mind me tagging along up in the crawl space and asking him everything I was curious about. He walked me through everything he was checking out. After inspecting both the air handler and the heat pump, we discovered a refrigerant leak and a worn out heating element. Jon took all the time I needed to talk through everything. From how long I plan to live at this house, the expansion plans with an extra room, to family needs and lifestyle. And we discussed all the options, from leak detection, refrigerant filling and equipment repair costs in relation to my foreseen time in this house and taking into consideration the future sale of the property and how old the system would be at the time; as well as total system replacement. We crawled around the other crawl space access and talked out relocating the air handler to get it out of the cramped location it was currently in. We walked around the house discussing the ideal relocation of the heat pump for my house expansion plans. I think we walked through every possible option in preceding forward. All in all, he was here for over 3 hours when the inspection only took him 1/2 hour. The rest was all answering my questions. I ended up deciding to replace the system and am happy with the decisions we settled on. Thomas Britton and his crew showed up two days later to install the new system. They were polite and went right to work. They laid drop clothes to protect my hardwood floors. They successfully removed the old system and installed the new system in one day and I was enjoying my warm house by nightfall. The installation looks very clean and neat. Nobody is happy about dropping a lot of money for an unplanned home repair. But having a good experience with a company's customer service and the field technicians makes a world of difference. This company sold me a $1000 UV light (installed in my hvac duct work)after telling me that it would resolve the mold found growing in my duct work. What they failed to tell me was that my ductwork was actually improperly installed and no amount of UV light could actually resolve the issue. In reality, it turns out that another professional recently discovered that my ductwork is made out of porous fiberglass that breaks apart as air passes through it constantly sending mold and debris throughout my home. A UV light installation suggestion to remedy this issue is ineffective and bogus. Rather than being honest and straightforward with me about what I truly needed, they insisted the only feasible solution was to install a UV light for $1000. I am now out $1000 and having to have my duct work properly replaced with stainless steel from another company. This is costing me $4000 in addition to the $1000 they already took from me unethically. When I tried to address this with them in person, they were defensive and attacked me saying that I was doing the wrong thing by complaining about a service and refused to let me speak to a manager. They also tried to tell me that it was my fault because I waited so long before having another professional discover the improper materials used in my ductwork, when in reality they never should have sold me this item to begin with or told me that it was a necessary component of my HVAC system. They have also refused to respond to any of my emails or voicemails regarding this issue. I am now taking them to small claims court and hopes to rightfully reclaim my loss. Additionally, I have had significant health problems with my breathing and airway including illnesses such as an pneumonia and bronchitis for the past few years which my doctors attribute to the mold in the ductwork. I called 3 places for estimates last year when I need an entire new heating/cooling system and also new hot water heater in my home. What I needed: 2.5 ton AC unit for the house exterior (Goodman). I also needed them to replace the air handler on the interior. (Apollo system). In addition, I needed a harder to find Water Heater, a 35,000 BTU in order to handle the Apollo heating system. (Previous water heater was 25 yrs old and a slow leak developing, so time to replace that baby before it went up like the fountains at the Vellagio...) First I called A-1 American. A-1 American's quote: $10,390.25, "reduced" to $9,035.00, before taxes and after the "15" discount". Then I called Guy Smith Heating + cooling. Their quote: $6,555.00. I went with Guy Smith, and glad I did! Installed everything, good welds around the water heater piping, new thermo in the house too, they did great work. I even had a "blocked drain line" issue that was probably not even their fault (primary line from the drain pan blocked, but not the secondary) and they came out " blew that line out later on the same day I called for no charge. I still recommend all folks get quotes from 2 or 3 different places when getting this kind of work done, but make sure Guy Smith is on the list of folks you get an estimate from. I was happy they had Saturday hours and were quick to respond and set an appointment. The heat pump condenser fan motor bearings were shot and the motor needed to be replaced. Guy Smith tech quoted over $1100 to replace the motor. When I balked, he tried to sell me a line that "OEM motors cost that much". Still not believing him, he fell back to some bull about "All repairs we do are flat rate." I paid him for the diagnosis and kindly invited him to leave. That quote was ridiculous. Guy Smith's website has all kinds of statements that they have 24-hour emergency air conditioning repair service. Over the Memorial Day weekend, my A/C went out, and I called them. The phone rang about 15 times before I gave up. I called several times, thinking maybe I had dialed the wrong number, but it was the right one. Why did I call over and over when it was clear no one would answer? Because it SAYS 24-hour emergency air conditioning repair, and I couldn't fathom the website would say that and it NOT be true!! The last time I called, the call went to a voicemail box. The voicemail said something like, you have reached the maintenance department, if you need service, call the main number. But this was the main number that I had called and gotten the answering machine. It just so happens that I live within walking distance from Guy Smith's Virginia Beach office, so I went there to make sure maybe there wasn't anything wrong with the phone line, see if someone was there that I could speak to. It was Memorial Day, but the website says 24-hour emergency air conditioning repair, so there has to be someone there, right? Nope. There's an option on the website to schedule an appointment. When I tried to, a pop-up box said it seemed like my situation was urgent (sparks flying out of the unit), and was I sure I wanted to schedule an appointment online. Since no one would pick up a phone, I said yes. I went all the way through the end of June and into July, and the site said there were no appointments available. I'm so disappointed. When I reached someone at a different company and the tech came, I told him I'd called many places, including Guy Smith. He was surprised. Guy Smith has a good reputation, even among their competitors. I'm disappointed to see a local business that I can walk to doesn't live up to the praise or even to the commitment they made on their own website. read more

This review is based on an experience at my place of employment (on Indian River Rd in VB) Imagine the setting: it's Monday morning and the temp outside is well into the 80s when we walk in to find our office also well into the 80s. There were 3 very unhappy and almost cranky women in here. My boss called a competitor (she used them last year) and was told they couldn't get to us until tomorrow, possibly Wednesday. When she told her boss he said "just start calling everyone". She knows I Yelp so she pulled up HVAC places based on their reviews and we settled for Guy Smith. She called him at 9:21am this morning and at 12:56 we received a call that the tech was on his way. He showed up here exactly 15 minutes later. By 2:21pm our A/C was back up and running. This is what I call service!!! The other guys told my boss that he had friends in other HVAC businesses that were all swamped and even if she called around she'd run into a wait. Ha!! Our problem was a fried pole connector and low freon (or whatever they put in them now). The tech showed my boss the connector, he added 2 lbs of freon and replaced the connector and we are all now happy as clams! On a day where we reached a heat index of 101 at 11:30 we are super thankful for Guy Smith and their super fast response time! I would definitely recommend them. Thank you again! When I called 8am the next morning, the customer service agent answered the line so quickly I never heard it ring! She vetted my information and scheduled a same-day-appointment. A short time later I was given a courtesy call the Technician was en route. Once the Technician, Marcus, arrived he immediately began asking questions about the history of the unit, while multi-tasking & troubleshooting. Less than .30 minutes later, he discovered the hiccup, shared his findings with me and what was needed to resolve the issue. In addition, while wrapping up his visit, he was very insightful to share tips on how I could properly care for my unit moving forward. Well executed job! read more

The technician quickly diagnosed the problem with our A/C and after reviewing our warranty paperwork gave us a repair estimate and scheduled the repair. The next day a technician came out and replaced the bad part. He would have finished that day if it weren't for rain. The following day a crew showed up early am to finish the job. Highly recommend. Our AC unit in the attic sprung a leak and water was coming out from the ceiling on a Sunday before Florence was supposed to hit. Called Guy Smith and a tech was out within 45 minutes. He was very professional and took the time to explain everything to me in a way that I understood what was going on and how the system worked. The unit was very old and we knew it would need to be replaced and after talking it over with my husband later that evening we decided to replace it before the possibility of bad weather came in. Our awesome tech came back out that evening to complete the paperwork so we could rush the install ahead of Hurricane Florence and get the install done the next day at an amazing price (I did call around to 3 other companies for quotes and Guy Smith came in under them by quite a bit!). The next day we had 4 professional techs show up first thing in the morning and they were all super polite and worked hard all day in the heat and rain and got the full install done before evening. I was very impressed by their work ethic and the fact that they even took a few minutes to humor my 3 year old and talk about Thomas the train with him. Had one of those hand on face moments. Changed my thermostat or tried to change it. After reinstalling the old one because the new saiid it had no power thinking it was the new verse old that was bad I then realized the old one didn't work either. I had turn the power off at the breaker but didn't flip the heat pump switch off. My derp moment came when Phillip from Guy Smith's saved the day when he pulled the fuse out of his pocket at my doorstep and said this is your problem without even looking at anything yet.
