I love this place and I only refrain from giving it 5 stars because it's so COLD in there! Monday gets my vote as the best night, but that's because I like it best when it's quiet! I love coming here weekdays after work, having a few beers and playing a few games of Scrabble...sure tiles are missing, but big deal. I'm partial to Scrabble, but Guthrie's has everything from Trivial Pursuit to Battleship to Candy Land (for the WEAK!). And Chris the bartender is really sweet and usually plays great music. This was a fun bar to come to after a Cubs game. There were lots of beers on tap, and only after the fact did I notice that they also have a wide selection of cocktails and Pimm's. It was definitely crowded, but the bartenders handled everyone very well. Being from out of town, it seemed like a fun environment to kick back with your friends - not too much of a scene. This place is a blast. I came here with a friend of mine pretty early on a Saturday night. The place was already packed. There was nowhere to sit at the bar and no open tables. We stood around awkwardly pressed against the wall looking like we were standing in line for the bathroom for about a half hour before a table opened up. Totally worth it. Guthrie's is special because it's not just a bar. It's a place to go to play games. They have a huge bookshelf filled with all sorts of board games and stuff. Connect 4, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Would you rather... so great. It's not only a great place to go with friends but it would be perfect for a first date. Built in ice-breaker? Yes, please! Just make sure you get there early because the tables fill up fast and people tend to stay awhile when games are involved. read more

Went on a Sunday evening and there were plenty of tables. Love the board game selection, but expect a few missing pieces. When this place is not overly packed or jammed it is one of my favorite bars in the Wrigleyville area. A wonderful selection of beers and Steve has done a fabulous job of keeping the ambiance of this place and making it feel like the neighborhood haunt. Come here on a weeknight with some friends or with a date, very enjoyable and it's great to try out some different brews. I would also say Higgins is right up there as well. read more

I won't lie, I love Guthrie's. It has a great atmosphere and of course a huge selection of board games. They have several copies of most of the classic board games you love but it's also fun to try some of the ones you have never heard of before. This place also has a fantastic beer selection. They let you order out food from other places into their bar which is another neat feature. I wouldn't recommend any of their own food (you can tell its just oven baked frozen food you would by at any Jewel . . .and not very good). You really need to take the good with that bad here. I have had great bar tenders and horrible ones. A lot of times they are under staffed but the atmosphere pays off for the crappy service at times. Also, in the summer during Cubs games forget about it. You will be bombarded by annoying, drunk, cubs fans once the game lets out. The ceiling is a great conversation starter. Make sure you look UP when sitting down. I also loved the array of games they had. My favorite bar in Chicago, and not just because I used to live a block away. Low-key setting, really nice crowd, great beer selection, lots of seating, and board games! They have a big selection of games, you can bring your own if you want. The only food they serve is not-great pizza and wings I think, but you can order food from a neighborhood place and have it delivered - just ask for the delivery menu collection at the bar. It gets crowded on weekend evenings and after Cubs games, but on weeknights it's easy to find a table. Bonus - or maybe letdown - no TVs. No patio, but they have a back room where they open up the windows in the warm weather - almost as good! read more

Love me some Guthrie's!! I live right down the street and it's a fun, occasional, neighborhood alternative to going out and getting crazy. Big downside is the wait/constant crowds. The crowd here is awesome. Super eclectic bunch with ages ranging from the mid twenties on up to the mid 60s. The selection of games is a little weird and a little tired but the fact that Ian's delivers pizza is pretty awesome. I would recommend that they add another bar tender though. YES to the board games! I loved it. I always am down to play but sometimes feel I exceed the age limits on the box so don't usually indulge in such activities. However, the tall bookcase stacked high with memories of a childhood provided the perfect outlet. Our group stayed and played for a couple of hours and played a few games. We ordered a pizza from the bar, which was decent and cheap. I didn't drink but the other people seemed satisfied with their beers. All in all, a great experience and fun place to go for a nice relaxing Saturday afternoon. read more

Yes, I've been to Guthries during "Grumpy" the bartender's shift, but I ignore her once I have a beer in my hand. I've been here for last dates, first dates, break-up recovery for friends,but I haven't been in quite a while. My boyfriend and I came here for our first date nearly a year ago. Not sure why we haven't been back since. It's about time. Board games are always plentiful no matter how crowded the place is. And beer selection is awesome. Maybe Grumpy's gone by now, which would give this place 5 stars instead of 4, and hopefully the ladies' room toilet is fixed. I'll keep y'all posted. read more

Can't say enough about this place, I've been here 3 times now. They have a nostalgic selection of board games and drinks to keep you entertained for hours. No food, but you can order pizza! The last time I was there, the bartendress recommended a great pizza place from the huge tin of pizza places that deliver there. Get there early as it can be hard to get a table. Guthries is a better place for a fun date, rather than a romantic one :) As with most bars in the area, it can be difficult to find parking. First time here tonight and had a great time. We came early (about 7) so we easily found a table. The space is pleasant and unpretentious. Patrons played board games at most tables. Guthrie's encourages people to order food in as they don't have many offerings. The alcohol menu is not extensive but you don't really go there for that anyway. It's a great hangout place. read more

It's nothing fancy; great selection of games, generally pretty friendly crowd, good amount of space. Celebrated a graduation here and also had a work Christmas party here. The staff is pretty useless but not unkind. Good for a night out but there are definitely better game bars out there that have more seating on busy nights. I love this place. It's charming and warm and cozy and has great beers on tap. I like the tamale guy. I come here often. Sadly, one of their new bartenders is pretty awful. She ignored both my husband and myself for quite some time when we separately approached the bar to order a beer. She did, however, take other people's orders.. When she finally acknowledged me she said something like, "I've seen you all along honey!" and made a face. Then she continued to call me 'hon' and 'honey' in a manner that I felt was condescending. I enjoyed this place fully! Even though the 2 connect 4 sets we grabbed had broken parts so therefore did not work, but what can you expect with mostly drunk people manhandling all the games. But I had a great time anyway! I went on a Friday night for the first time even though I live 4 houses down, and I definitely plan on going several more times during the week, because it just looks like such a chill place when it is not crowded. Stopped by with a friend on a Saturday night and immediately fell in love with this place. There is a laidback vibe and funky charm that combine for a place that just feels incredibly comfortable and ... nice. I love this place. For years my bestie and I have been sipping beers and ciders over pizza in the corner table in the back of the bar. I've moved away from Chicago now, but when I visit, I make sure to stop by Guthries. I last visited this past weekend. I'm still giving Guthries a 4 (because I love this place so much and don't want to lose hope!) but this past experience wasn't my best. The bartender came across as very rude (had never had him before). I was also a little bummed that the pizza had been changed, but I'll live. Honestly my 5 stars is mostly for the decoration and atmosphere of this bar. The ceiling is probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen. There are board games scattered throughout the bar that you can play whenever, however my group of 4 was unable to find a table due to it being a busy Saturday night, so we just stood by the bar and talked instead. I have seen reviews saying the bouncer and bartenders are very rude, neither of which I seemed to notice during my time there. Like I said, the bar was packed the night I went, yet my group was able to order and get drinks pretty easily, even if the bartenders didn't seem the friendliest or most talkative, I just thought they were busy. They offer indoor and outdoor seating which is nice for the short Midwest summers, and like I said, decoration is killer. Drinks were fairly priced and they have a good variety. I've also ordered food and had it delivered to the bar as well which is a nice touch. The folks who usually seem to frequent Guthries are in their late 20's and older which is nice if you're looking for a more mature crowd. My only complaint is the service. I've been here a handful of times and had nothing but poor experience in ordering drinks. There is either a long wait time (even while it's slow) or the bartenders are in an off putting mood. Customer service is huge to me especially if it is somewhere I'd like to unwind and have a good time. Either the bartenders are having a poor day every time I'm there or they (not all) have bland personalities. I don't need someone to do back flips but I'd like a little more of an upbeat persona when I go out to have a pint. read more
