I came here yesterday because I heard it was a good spot for breakfast. I liked a lot of the things on the menu like the shakshuka eggs and the avo toast, but settled on the chili and crab scrambled eggs (over toast). The food came out quickly and I asked for it spicy, however the kitchen could give it to me. I was impressed at how fast the food came out, especially because I ordered after the rest of my party. So far so good and everything seemed fine but then took a turn for the worst.
My friend gets the shakshuka dish that is served in a cast iron bowl with two handles that jut out on either side. It's placed on a rectangular wooden tray with a cutout for the bowl. The server sets it down with the cast iron bits that stick out not aligned with the long ends of the wood. It's got the bits that stick out on the short side. My friend leans over to get the salt and his shoulder touched the cast iron and he got burned. If you've ever seen anything cast iron that gets heated in an oven, you know how hot this can be. The burn left an immediate mark and during the course of our breakfast it went from welt to actually blistering.
Everyone who was in the party was pretty shocked there was no "this plate is extremely hot" warning and baffled as to why you would put the long ends of a cast iron pot on the short sides of the wooden rectangle. It should be in alignment so this very thing does not happen. My friend made a couple of remarks about it, but no one on the staff did anything about it. Our server casually said she was sorry, then walked away.
We go to pay and my friend tells the cashier what happened, she literally said "I'm sorry, I guess." He's a little incensed and cursed about the situation, not at her in particular and another girl who i'm assuming is the manager starts reprimanding him about his language- saying that it hurts her staff's feelings- then has the audacity to top that off by saying that the food runner said the plate was hot, he just didn't hear it or she said it softly. So she knew about the situation, never came over and said anything. She's basically admitting no guilt and lecturing him about how he should be considerate of the staff. He got BURNED AND THEN HAD TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR HIS MEAL! Hello, welcome to Gus', I'm going to chop off your finger and you'll thank me and tip! Is this some sort of masochist theme restaurant? I chimed in and said maybe he cursed because he literally got burned (she could see his skin blistering) and you aren't being considerate of HIS feelings.
If this is any indication, the customer service is beyond disgusting. Back home in LA, Gus' would have a lawsuit on their hands the very next day. Didn't come over and say anything, didn't comp anything off of his bill, just basically shrugged and then yelled at him. The guy who got burned and is paying good money to eat there. The eggs were really good, but not sure i'll be back after that ridiculous treatment. Customer is always wrong there?? read more
