If you are a person of color, you'll likely be made to feel uncomfortable by the employees. This seems to have been going on for years. I am not sure why/how something has been done about it. I am such a fan of boutique shopping and I absolutely love, love, love Gus Meyer. The wardrobe is very trendy, chic, stylish and quite unique. The bonus is the friendliness of the staff. On an early morning walk to a nearby coffee shop (you know, the one with a mermaid), there was a most fabulous outfit in the window so I made it a point to check on it during opening hours. Imagine my boyfriend and I walking into this beautiful store decked out in our gym attire, amidst all the finely dressed clientele of Green Hills. We were greeted by Mrs. Wanda with bountiful smiles (hoping she) passed on judgment. I was fitted with many items with ease, patience and uber compliments and walked away with not just one but three outfits (thank you boyfriend ). I felt like a Pretty Women moment happened upon me! Thank you to Mrs. Wanda for your kindness and assistance in enhancing my wardrobe. It was a lovely experience! The store is very comforting and offers so many styles (ball gowns too!). Fun store and a lot of great outfits, dresses and accessories galore. A bit on the pricey side and I didn't find anything that stood out for me to even try on. Some cute dresses for sure but I couldn't justify spending the amount listed for a few of the items I was remotely interested in at all. Staff is nice and friendly and don't make you feel you don't belong at least. read more

I wrote a 1 star review previously because of the poor customer service that I received. I was so upset that I sent an email to Gus Mayer about my experience. To my surprise, I received a response. In the response I was told how sorry they were that it happened, that they had spoken to the sales associate and that they wanted to make it right. I thought this was wonderful! They could have just ignored my email all together. However, they chose to apologize. For this, I must give them 5 stars. I will definitely keep them in my shopping rotation. read more

Most uncomfortable experience as a first time shopper. I was sent here because I was told about the great fragrance selection. And the selection is amazing. I received my last fragrance here as a Christmas gift last year. Upon entering was fine, i had a helpful younger lady, then there was the older lady with the dark hair. She stared and stood there as if she was store security. The younger lady and I were talking and she was explaining some things to me as I was telling her what I liked. Older lady, asked if I was ready to buy something. I told her to hold on, as I was checking out a number of items to see what I actually liked. She stood there in close proximity of me, staring the ENTIRE time as if I was about to run out the door with the entire countertop of fragrances. I could touch her if I wanted to. She moves behind the counter and the younger lady asked her if she was getting something for me she said "no I'm just waiting until she gets what she needs"...minutes go by and as i'm standing there she types on her phone, taps the younger lady and says "I like your jacket" and turns her phone to her so she can read what she typed. The younger girl nods her head, and at that moment I walked out . The older lady wasn't helpful she was just standing there, as there were other customers in the store she could have been helping. If I've never felt stereotyped a day in my life, today was the day. And from these reviews she seems to have a reputation. Treat ALL your customers the SAME. Because if things would have escalated in that store and became confrontational because of this older lady, I'm sure she would have played victim. Do better. I left without purchasing the fragrance I absolutely wanted because of this older lady with the dark hair. read more

This could be the biggest turn around in a review update for me thus far! What started off as a very icky situation has blossomed into a rather smashing experience... puberty anyone? Yea, I went there. On a serious note, I finally used my Gus Mayer gift card today and enjoyed doing so thanks to the new management and shopgirl Bobbi who were not only charming, doting, but also very helpful! Trust me when I say that I was barely recognizable in a baseball hat, gym shorts, and sneakers when I popped in today. Not my best look but it didn't stop these ladies from giving me 5 star service. I always seem to fall in love with pieces that are either not in my size or just aren't available and both of these ladies checked with the Birmingham store to see if they could locate these items for me. Bobbi showed me everything from designer denim and emerging jewelry designers to Versace sunglasses that I was able to swipe up for 80% off! I also purchased a classic pair of Joe's Jeans that were available in a petite cut for $150. Although the inseam is already shorter, I plan to bring them back in for alterations which is a convenient service that they offer. You may also bring in items that have not been purchased from Gus for this service. I have a pair of Stella McCartney high-waisted jeans that I have not been able to wear as they are made for supermodels and not little nuggets like me, so I will update you all on how they alter those for me too! After chatting with these ladies, they let me know that good ol' Gus is really focusing on contemporary lines and even doing a renovation soon. I already love some of the forward collections that they carry that include Rachel Roy, Nanette Lepore, Catherine Malandrino, Tucker, Yoana Baraschi, and Joe's Jeans but looking forward to what else they have up their sleeves. TIP: Check out the Sale rack towards the back of the store for some huge markdowns! read more

I have never received such terrible customer service in my life. I walked in to Gus Mayer after an item in the window caught my attention. I walked in, went to see the item in the window, and went to the counter because I had a question regarding said item. There was someone in front of me in line, so I was patiently waiting, and all of a sudden, a customer and sales associate brushed by me. The sales associate was a little old lady and was so extremely rude and practically shoved through me TWICE. There were maybe three customers besides myself in the entire store, and probably 4-5 sales associates on the floor. Not ONE associate greeted me upon arrival or ever asked me if I needed assistance. I was shocked to see 3-4 of them standing around together talking and laughing. I walk over to ask for help, and they all look at me the way that a catty high school girl would look- basically up and down and then turned back to their conversation. I was shocked and embarrassed. Needless to say, that was my first and last time stepping in Gus Mayer. I really expected more from a so-called high-end establishment and will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

TRASH HUMAN ALERT - Actually if it was allowed I would give it -50. Me and my best friend flew in to shop and see Chris Stapleton 2 weeks ago. Checked into our Hotel (W hotel which was amazing..side bar)had a taxi called, and off we went excited to shop. We wanted to check out Green Hill Mall and the kind taxi driver told us about this store. We went here first. AS SOON as we walked in the hole...ALL EYES ON US. Me and my bf separated and one of the ladies stopped and asked if I needed something every 2 minutes and followed me. While she was asking and following us around the old hags that work there or go in there because they have a miserable life and nothing else better to do, were watching us through the clothes racks. It was hilariously pathetic and ridiculous! The final straw was when we were leaving. The perfumes are/were located next to the exit. We were standing there spraying and smelling, TWO of them came over to stand over us and act like they wanted to help us. False pretense!! By this time my blood was boiling! I was going to say something but the bf did. Asked the woman (sarcastically) if they have ever had black people in the store before? She says with a dumb grin on her face " sure we have" Not "Ms. I am sorry why did you ask that. TRASH HUMANS! Minus that first taste of Nashville the city and the rest of the people I met were wonderful! H. Audry was fantastic, the lady in Teressa Foglia was divine. I modeled as a teen in the 1966 era at a store called LEVY'S, that later became GUS MAYER in Memphis, TN. IT was a great time because I met so many GREAT people and got to wear such exciting clothes. After Christmas, I stopped by this store with my mother and sister who were in from out of town. My mother is over 70 and loves high-end boutique shopping. We were going to buy her something very nice for her Christmas gift and I thought that this would be a great outing. Unfortunately, we received no assistance or customer service from the 3-4 sales associates in the store. No greeting - just ignored. My mom wanted to try on a outerwear after looking around for about 10 minutes. I had to actually interrupt the chatting sales associate to ask for help- which was very minimal. I think that she only pointed to a rack of clothes and said that we could look there... Given the reputation of the store and the quality of the items sold, I really expected more customer engagement and it seemed that their interaction with other customers was much more personal and friendly. Maybe they were tired from Christmas retail or maybe we didn't fit the bill of their traditional customer - in any event, I never forgot the experience and needless to say, we didn't make a purchase that day and we won't be back. read more
