Came here for the first time and we were very excited to try Gus's deli. We were in the mood for sandwiches. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by I'm assuming Gus. There was no one in there. We were the only customers. Very talkative guy. We didn't know what to expect so we took a minute reviewing the menu. We went ahead and ordered two turkey sandwiches. Options for bread are white wheat or rye. Other than that, we were only asked if mayo, lettuce and tomato were OK. Gus is very friendly saying we are going to love it!!! So we sat down the sandwiches came out freshly done. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in building his sandwiches. My boyfriend really enjoyed his sandwich. It's exactly what he was looking for. For my personal review I wouldn't really say this is my favorite. It was just regular white bread stacked high with three slices of cheese, a ton of lettuce and a stack of turkey. Way too big for me. I would've preferred sourdough bread maybe some pickles and toasted? Maybe some avocado and other add on options so that you can build your sandwich..... And of course a lighter sandwich. I definitely had to take the other half to go, but I wasn't really impressed. To be quite honest i could have just made a regular sandwich at home just like this. There wasn't anything special. I wouldn't spend my money on something that I could make at home. For any of those that enjoy just basic sandwiches like this i would say this should be your to go spot to help support the owners. Hours are short so you have to make sure you make your way early. Again, I'm not taking away from the fact that this is a great lunch spot and the owners deserve all the praise and business. I found this place in a hurry one day when I needed to grab a quick lunch. It was a bit hard to find as it's tucked away behind a large TV station building. But once you know where it is, it's easy to find and worth it. I went in during lunch one day and it was quiet. The hours are limited, as they close early afternoon. I had a great conversation with the owners and cook, Gus, and his lovely wife behind the counter. I ordered the lamb gyro plate with the french fries - and Gus said, you can get fries anywhere, try my rice! And so he served up the rice and asked me to try it right then and there. I asked for my feta on the side, and again he was insistent I try it then. The portions are gigantic - it was enough for at least 2 meals. We talked about his background in ethnic cooking. I was impressed they opened up around the time Covid-19 was raging and they've managed to stay in business despite opening up during a difficult time. The food was good, the portions are generous, making it a good value for the money, I enjoyed meeting the proprietors, and I'm looking forward to returning and trying out some of his soups and other lunch items. read more

Remember Gus from Gus' Cantina, Club Belize, and several other restaurants and business ventures around town? His current restaurant is Gus' Deli - West Allis, WI at 813 N 60th Street, on the first floor of the CBS 58 building. Last weekend, I finally got a chance (two chances, actually) to visit. Saturday morning, I called in a carry-out order for a Ham, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sandwich on wheat, and on Monday, I walked in and ordered the Chicken Enchiladas dinner for carry-out. Both were really excellent and a GREAT value with plenty of food! I could only finish half of each at each sitting and had the rest as leftovers later on those respective days. Dine-in and carry-out is available, and the menu hangs above the kitchen and consists of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, as well as some Mexican favorites, such as tacos, buritos, and enchiladas, with choice of chicken, beef, or pork. His website, Facebook page, Google page, and Yelp page all show slightly different business hours, but the key takeaways are 1) open for breakfast and lunch Monday-Saturday, and 2) the food is delicious at a great value! This last photo shows the Summer business hours will be 8am-2pm Monday-Saturday, starting June 13th, but you safely call in a carry-out order or dine-in during those times this week, too. read more

Stopped by Gus' Deli before a day boating to get some sandwiches to bring with us on the boat. First thing to note--it's not a traditional, cold sandwich sub kind of deli. It's in Yelp as a diner and that is closer to the mark. It's also tucked away at the end of a building that has a TV station, I believe, so can be a bit hard to find. That said, they packed up our sandwiches well for us to take with us and they were all absolutely delicious so no complaints here! As others have mentioned, their hours are limited to morning through mid-afternoon. So, definitely more of a breakfast/lunch spot. I ordered their chicken caesar wrap which was hands down one of the best caesar wraps I've ever enjoyed. The parmesan was flavorful, the dressing was creamy and they used the perfect amount--honestly, it was just dreamy. The service was kind and efficient. Get to it! read more

Stopped in for lunch yesterday at Gus' Deli. It's in an unusual place but definitely worth finding! I was meeting a colleague ahead of an afternoon meeting and Gus' was close by. I had the chicken tacos and my colleague had chili and a club sandwich. WOW! That was a lot of food! Definitely a good value. The food came out quickly as it did not seem very busy for lunchtime. We grabbed beverages from the cooler and ordered at the bar. We sat down and the food arrived in minutes. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. The host and the cook/owner both stopped by to check on us. The food was tasty but I thought the chicken in my tacos could use some seasoning. This was easily resolved with some salsa. We were in and out quickly and with leftovers. Gus' is definitely worth a visit! read more

Two things everyone says about this place and both are true: it's difficult to find, and well worth the effort. We were from out of town, perhaps making the search a little harder. Gus clearly loves his job, and it shows in the food and the service. My wife ordered sausage and French toast, which was wonderfully eggy and rich. I got a chorizo breakfast burrito -- delicious, served with a perfect (for me) salsa -- medium heat and rife with cilantro. The place had just opened for the day and we were the only ones there. The place is large and clean; understated but inviting. Gus doted on us, bringing out some freshly fried tortilla chips for me to enjoy with the burrito and salsa. The seasoning on the chips was a nice touch. The burrito was humongous -- too big really, as we had no way to store it, but we're not going to ding a place for that, and if you can take home leftovers, it's two meals for the price of one. Gus is a gem -- a wholehearted, full FIVE STARS for this place. read more

In addition to serving amazing food for both breakfast and lunch (my go-to's are the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich for breakfast and the club sandwich for lunch), Gus is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Since I became a semi-regular customer a couple years ago, it's hard to tell which one of us is more excited to see there other when I come through the door. Even if he's busy he always takes a moment to ask how my family is doing and he often shows me something he's cooking up special. Equally, first time customers are treated with warmth and appreciation like you've been a customer of his forever. The world would be a far better place if more people were like Gus. read more

My family & I went to Gus's a few weeks ago because it was my birthday & I got to pick:) I have been a couple of times with work friends & my best friend (who owns a high-end restaurant & loved Gus's food!) On this day, in our family there were 6 adults, a toddler & a baby & Gus & his wife could not have been more welcoming! We all loved his amazing food~my best friend & I have still never had a better club sandwich anywhere. But it's always the warmth & "family-like" atmosphere that is my favorite thing about coming to Gus's. They say that "People come for the food. They come back for the service, how they were treated." This place is a little hidden gem. It is tucked away in the corner of the local CBS news station. The food and service here are impeccable. I honestly expect much from a small mom and pop shop like this, but I had a pleasant experience here. You order first up front and then they bring you your food. I am surprised how big the restaurant actually is. There is plenty of seating. There is a bar and lots of tables. There are also TVs so you can watch games there, which is a plus. We got a turkey sandwich and lamb gyro sandwich. Wow, the portions are huge. That's what makes sandwiches great. I like that they were generous with the fillings because it made the sandwiches so flavorful and tasty. I am always a little nervous that the gyro meat will be dry, but this was actually delicious and well seasoned. The fries were also yummy. The lady was really friendly and checked on us. The guy making the food also checked on us, which was very cool. 10/10 I highly recommend you come here. I look forward to coming back here again. read more

I have been tryin to get in here for a while now but the hours are weird, I forget about them or I drive past when they are closed and it never worked out until today. The place is in what looks like a dead mall with a TV station and nothing to look at from the outside but the inside is really neat with a bar, comfy puffy chairs, tables. TVs, pictures and kitsch everywhere with exposed brick and ceiling. The guy working the kitchen is super friendly with his customers and keeps you updated on your order while he is making the orders before me. The turnover case is filled with ridiculous huge pastries. For a deli I hated the menu because it didn't have a lot of sandwich options and it had Mexican and middle eastern options with breakfast and no Italian sandwich option. I opted for the most pricy sandwich which is the club which I thought was pricy thinking of previous clubs that I have had. I don't do club sandwiches very often but it's all I liked on the menu and I do occasionally order them. OMG this is a Fu%#ing monster master piece club sandwich like I have never had the pleasure of being introduced to before and it's epic in it's raw form. The club was fu%#ing delicious on bakery toasted fresh white bread with thick sliced ham and turkey, tomato, lettuce, cheese, bacon and mayo. OK I see why it's $10 because it's not the typical whimpy club sandwich because it's more like a gourmet club with quality fresh toppings and meats and no skimping on anything. The cold fresh toppings were very refreshing on a hot summer day. Did I mention that's it's piled high with the container barely able to close and you need to be a snake and unhinge your jaw to eat it but it's well worth getting. I have never had a club sandwich executed so well above the average and it definitely shines. This is the best club sandwich that I have ever had and it's playing at a level that few can compete with because they don't try, passion and vision is behind this sandwich and it shows. I'm definitely making this place my go to place to get a club sandwich. Nice job. I don't give 5 stars that often on my reviews if you follow me and my reviews because I feel that a 5 star is only worthy when I get blown away with an experience so the highest star is not given lightly, today Gus deli entered my 10% club and they earned it, see my pictures. read more

Stopped in to Gus's Deli this morning...you might remember Gus and not even realize it. He is a sweet, funny, one of a kind gentleman. Back in the day, he owned The Unicorn, a punk/alternative club and music venue in the basement of the Sydney Hih building that many now-famous musicians played at including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. He also used to own Gus' Mexican Cantina and several other restaurants before retiring to North Carolina. Retirement didn't serve him well. He lost everything in a hurricane a few years ago, came back to MKE and here we are today. He's just as delightful as he always was and the food was amazing. You won't be disappointed. My husband and I found this hidden gem this morning. VERY odd location, but once you find it, walk in, you will be completely surprised how much space there is!!! We were immediately greeted by Gus. We both ordered the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and only waited ten minutes or so before it was ready. Once the food came out he assured we'd love it! He was correct!! We both agreed that it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches we'd ever had!!! Highly recommend and can't wait to go back and try their lunch dishes! read more

We met Gus today!!! What a nice guy! He thanked us at least 4x for coming in and he made us some excellent food - I had the Thai salad - loved the marinated chicken (48hrs he said he marinated it!), crunchy noodles, omg yum. My Dad got a quesadilla and Mom got a mozzarella and tomato sandwich- they loved their food as well. Oh and we took home a couple of the cookies - totally worth 5.75 when they taste that good - I'm a baked goods snob, so it was nice to actually enjoy homemade bakery like that. read more

First off, kinda difficult to find. It's tucked away on the side of a television station. I missed it at first, but found it on the second approach. No stars lost for this, just wanted to point it out. The inside decor was really nice, alot of spread out tables with a bar in the front and a buffet counter off to the side. Also an open kitchen area to the side of the bar. Everything was clean. No stars lost. As we walked in, it was unclear if we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated. There also wasn't a clear counter space to place an order at. We stood and waited for a while near the door, and when we werent greeted we decided to take a seat. There were plenty of available tables so that seemed reasonable. Still haven't deducted a star. We sat for about 5 minutes without being welcomed. There was a woman moving between the kitchen and seating area and a man working in the kitchen. Noone behind the bar. Hey, times are tough in the restaurant business, I'm willing to be patient for good food. Another couple minutes goes by and now it seems like we are being intentionally avoided. The woman has made eye contact with us on a couple occasions, yet has not come to our table. The next time she comes out to the seating area, I flag her down. No welcome, no greeting, no apology for the wait. Immediately the woman says, "The menu is on the wall over there (pointing at the kitchen area), you order up there, and then you take a seat. We have a large order right now, so you'll have to wait about 20 minutes." Then away she goes. We wait about 15 minutes longer, and upon observing a few other groups enter the restaurant, we decide to venture up to the bar to order ahead of them. We stand and wait another 5 minutes or so, unacknowledged, before the man in the kitchen asks for our order. He very quickly put together our food and the woman immediately provided a bill to be paid immediately at the bar. After paying, I ask her politely for our drinks and she points in an annoyed manner at a cooler with canned soda opposite the kitchen. At this point I've decided that providing great service is not a priority of hers and mentally I've deducted a star or two off my eventual Yelp rating. The food was ok, I ordered chicken nachos which consisted of chips, melted cheese, a ton of chicken, and some other nacho toppings (sour cream, salsa, onion, etc.). Plenty of food, as the plate was huge, but the chicken was bland and so plentiful that it overwhelmed the whole dish. The others with me also reported their food was just ok. Oddly, while my nachos came on a platter, the other meals were given to us in to-go boxes. Another lost star for less than stellar food. Not knowing the formalities of the restaurant and not wanting the annoy the woman worker any further, we cleaned up our table, throwing all the garbage in a corner trash can upon finishing our food. I don't know where we went wrong? Other reviews for this place are excellent. Is it only great for the regulars? The setup is confusing, is it a Deli counter with seating or a sit down restaurant? Neither is very clear from the setup! Either way, the woman was flat out unaccomidating and made us feel like we should've gone elsewhere. Then the so-so food reaffirmed that feeling. I have found my go-to lunch spot and probably my breakfast spot as well! I had read about Gus's and wanted to try it. Yes, as warned it's a little tucked away off Hawley Road in the Blast/Channel 58 complex (just south of the freeway), but well worth finding. I walked in and was immediately struck that there was just one person taking orders, cooking and delivering food to 4-5 tables of 4-5 persons each. It was Gus. I said, "I was going to order carry-out, but I can see you're very busy," he said, "No, no, no. Come here and tell me what you'd like." I ordered the club sandwich I'd heard about, and a Thai chicken salad for Kelly. The guy was hustling in high gear and busting his butt. I watched in admiration. He asked, "You ever have my club sandwich?" I said, "no," as he motioned me over to gaze upon his gargantuan creation. Wow. No need for a cup of soup or side of fries! He told me he had lived in Wisconsin and had a spot at State Fair before moving to North Carolina and opening a modest cantina. Then the hurricane came and he lost everything. A couple of years ago he moved back to Wisconsin and was determined to give it a go. "Then came Covid" he said. He must have thanked me for my business a half dozen times. Kelly's salad must have weighed five pounds. I got out of there for just over $20 - but of course added a nice tip. Go past the CBS 58 news room and a small sign alerts you to a delicious spot. We heard about Gus' Deli from the Milwaukee Foodie group and it didn't disappoint. Friendly, clean and a place with as much character as the owner. My boyfriend had the ginormous chorizo burrito and loved it. I had the hot and delicious ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Gus's was a tiny bit hard to find, but I am SO glad we did. We felt welcome the second we walked in. A standard deli menu with some great additions such as enchiladas. We got the chicken noodle soup and chili to start and both were amazing! We also got a hot dog and grilled cheese. Each bite was even better than the rest and very filling.
