Guru kitchen was delicious. Started with some Coconut shrimps recommended by the server and was the perfect starting dish... so aromatic and crunchy on the outside with very mild spices. The freshly cooked naan was buttery soft and seasoned with herbs that exploded all taste buds. In addition to the lamb that was sooo tender (didn't even need the knife) Paired with an old fashioned. I'm not exactly sure why or how this happened but Edmonton is a city with a large amount of particularly good Indian food. One of the restaurants that tops the list every time is Guru, which opened roughly a decade ago in Place Larue in Edmonton's west end. Since then they have opened a second location downtown and have generally been considered one of the highest-end Indian restaurants this entire time. Avenue Magazine named Guru Best Family-Style Dining 2020, which makes them the perfect place to visit with your Indian food-loving crew. I made a reservation in advance and arrived for dinner on a Saturday evening - ready to eat. The restaurant itself is very large and expansive, made up of various rooms and dining areas. There's an outdoor patio as well. The decor is also quite stunning with an ambiance that is modern but still boasts obvious Indian touches. I loved all of the intricate, rich details, especially the beautiful lit-up feature wall with "om" symbols. The music playing made us feel like we were in the movie 'Drive,' which we quite enjoyed. One small issue is that once we were seated no one came to serve us for a very long time (it was probably at least 20 minutes). When our server finally did show up she apologized profusely, explaining that no one had let her know about our table. Apart from that mishap, our server was wonderfully friendly and personable. I started right away with a Guru Chai (House ground spices, milk, black tea - $5.00), which is a staple for me in Indian restaurants. Although the cocktail list is very impressive and exotic-sounding. Mixologist Gurjeet Khaira has crafted each cocktail to match the Indian theme perfectly and I would especially like to try the Smokey Backyard which is made with housemade chai syrup. The server poured my chai theatrically, holding the pot up high. This is traditionally done to "refresh" the tea by allowing more contact with the air. Chai made in good Indian restaurants makes the likes of coffee shop chais look fake. I absolutely love having the real thing! Real ground spices and tea leaves steeped in milk allow for a rich, aromatic experience. An ideal cup of chai in my opinion! The "Small Plates to Share" section of the menu at Guru is particularly exciting to me because I feel that this is where they've been able to feature the most innovation. The ideas are interesting, flipping traditional dishes into something modern and new. I loved the idea of the Guru Street Food plate and Vishal's Poutine made with pakora fries and butter sauce is absolutely going to be in my future (can we get some paneer on there?!). However, there was no question, we were going to start with the Butter Chicken Samosas (Crispy triangular shells stuffed with butter chicken, served with chana masala - $8.75 for two), likely Guru's most popular dish and their claim to fame. I grabbed a forkful of chana masala right away (a chickpea curry) and was immediately blown away by how delicious it tasted. I had barely eaten anything and things were already off to an excellent start. An ingenious dish, the crisp, golden pastry is jammed full of juicy butter chicken. I've never seen this anywhere else and it's such an amazing way to enjoy butter chicken and still save room for other dishes later. These are a must-try every single time. But the starter that truly knocked my socks off was the Shrimp Pakora (Shrimp coated with chickpea and ground spices - $21.75) - somewhat expensive but absolutely worth it. Plump juicy shrimp were coated in a crispy pakora batter, creating an entirely unique dish. The flavour and texture was wonderful. I loved the salty spiciness, and of all of the dishes, I can't stop thinking about this one. It was unlike anything that I have ever tasted before! The shrimp had that addictive quality that makes you want to keep eating more. It also occurred to me (for the first time ever) that pakora is like the tempura of Indian cuisine. Served with two dipping sauces; one tamarind, one mint - a perfect match for both appetizers. These shrimp are special and you want them in your life! For our main event we decided to stray from our usual butter chicken or lamb curry or vegetable korma in an attempt to try something new. (Although I'm certain that Guru's version of all of those dishes is excellent.) On this visit it was going to be the Lamb Vindaloo (Portuguese spices blended with lamb and farm potatoes - $25.75), a dish derived from Portuguese cuisine. Unapologetically spicy, this dish was deeply rich with heat but not so much that any flavour was lost. The pieces of lamb were tender without a bone in sight. (You'd think that this is a given, but you'll find bones in your curries at other restaurants.) I also loved the potatoes which were perfectly stewed. I liked the quality of food- the curries had very big chunks of meat and cheese. But you can cut that up right? We chose three dishes- lamb biriani, butter chicken, and a spinach and cheese dish. I liked the butter chicken- not too sweet, like so many restaurants make it. I thought the spinach and cheese was pretty strong on the tomato, but that's just a preference. The chicken and the lamb were tender and juicy. We ordered saffron basmati rice and gluten-free naan. The basmati rice was a hit. I was disappointed in the naan-it seemed to be fried in oil that was a bit rancid- and the texture was not like a regular naan. My date ordered it without me noticing, but in retrospect (being only gluten-intolerant), real naan is something I'm willing to suffer for- (Unless the substitute is very tasty.) I noticed several empty tables for two, but my date and I were seated at a table more suited to 4 people, a bit in the open and I felt a bit exposed. I would have liked something a bit more intimate. Also the dishes were quite large. With three dishes, we had enough food for 4 people. In some Indian restaurants the dishes are half that size. This restaurant was billed as a romantic date restaurant, where a couple could have a quiet conversation. I found it more suitable for a group dinner. Tried this spot for the first time a little while ago and my mind was blown! The food is soooo good! It's a classy/elegant style of restaurant! Amazing for a romantic date night but also a cool place to go with coworkers or friends for a nice dinner! Service was amazing! My partner and I sat at the bar and got into a really good conversation with both the bartender and the manager! They were both very kind/ genuine! What a nice surprise. Thanks to my friend Laini for the invitation. The space is quiet and elegant. The staff is so warm, friendly and professional. (Thanks to our server, Austin??) They give you space to enjoy reading the menu. They make recommendations. I watched our naan being prepared through the kitchen window. The food description doesn't do it justice. It's so much tastier and beautiful than described. I started with a mixed salad of cabbage, peppers, corn and all sorts of yummies. My main was kafta curry. Out of this world. Spinach rolls basically. The naan was off our diet plan, but we just couldn't resist half a piece each. Very pleasant atmosphere and excellent food. Lunch for 2 with only sparkling water came to $48. Guru is the only place in town that serves up high end Indian cuisine. Yes, you probably don't associate upscale and Indian together but there are a few restaurants that do it well. Vij's in Vancouver is one spot that pops to mind immediately. Fun fact: this place used to be a Julio's Barrio. The interior is completely different (a good thing) with a wine case, full bar and plenty of tables/booths. I'm not sure whose dining here on the regular but it was fairly busy for a Friday night. The prices are STEEEEEEEEEEP. Prepare to do a double take back. I've never been here for dinner so I was shocked to see how expensive everything were: at least double the price than your usual Indian spot. - Shrimp pakora ($21.00) - holy crap, you get a grand total of seven pieces of shrimp. That's insane. They were good but nowhere near being worthy of the price tag. Yikes. - Garlic naan ($7.00) - I've had their naan before and the garlic is great. Fluffy, crispy, satisfying naan. - Lamb vindaloo (spicy) ($25.00) - our waitress informed us that their spice level goes up to 10. We went with a 7 and this was barely spicy. This is not legit Indian spice levels but it makes sense with the clientele they serve. Oh well. - Butter chicken ($24.00) - the sauce is on the sweeter side of things. - Palak paneer chilgoza ($22.00) - this was my favourite dish of the night. It actually had the most "heat" out of all the dishes but was well balanced in flavour. - Vegetable pulao ($11.00) - rice was moist and flavourful. - Tandoori chicken ($27.00) - plate comes out sizzling and the tandoori chicken was moist. We probably went overkill ordering this dish as we had a box of leftovers at the end. In a nutshell, Guru is decent but I just can't recommend it when you factor everything into consideration. This was my favourite one from the whole dinner. Butter Chicken: Not a big fan of Butter chicken but got impressed by their preparation. YUM, yum, and YUM again! I simply cannot say enough fabulous things about GURU! I've never had a dish here that I didn't love. Their Butter Chicken and Butter Chicken Samosas (HELOOOOOOOOOOOO) are the best in teh world! The first time I ever had GURU was at the Yelper Party 2 years ago at the Telus World of Science & I've never looked back. Recently, I went for a private lunch where we met and visited with Chef Deependra Singh! He even taught us how to make naan! Best lunch party ever! From the appetizer menu, you MUST try Cauliflower 65 and Butter Chicken Samosas or you have not lived! Finish up your meal with Mango Lassi or piping hot Chai and you're all set! COVID Review - Take-Out Review. Ok, so hadn't tried Guru prior to the pandemic. Thought I should support local businesses. Ordering from Guru was done using their website and calling them directly. Gent that took my order was very nice and personable. Had ordered 2 dishes plus rice and 2 pieces of naan... $75 ! (before tip) Not the place you go if you are watching your food budget. When I got there the place was dark and it looked like they were closed. There was a table at the entry, and after waiting for a bit, someone emerged out of the kitchen. Obtained my order and went home. Opened up the order, and everything was there, and the still fairly warm. What I was immediately struck by was the size of the portions. Quite small for the amount paid. Hmm... well let's reserve judgement until I taste this. Dug in, and it was good, but not outstanding. hmmm... well that was a bit disappointing. I had high hopes for Guru. Especially considering the rave reviews I had read. Overall, Take out is never a great indicator for a restaurant. The entire service aspect is missing and so is the ambiance. The food from Guru was good, but not outstanding. The biggest surprise was the small portion, and that my butter chicken had 6, yes I counted, thumb-sized pieces of chicken. For $25 ! Hmmm... not good. Not sure how the Indian food scene is in Edmonton but this place was pretty impressive. Parking is plentiful around the building. The interior is classy for sure with lots of dark wood. The staff were friendly and professional, though the service wasn't often enough. For drinks, I would highly recommend the mango lassi. It's a yogurt-based smoothie, and it is freaking good. For appies we had 2 types of samosas (chickpea and chicken). Normally I think of them as cheapo food, but the presentation here is awesome. The samosas are cut in half, which makes it easier to soak innards in the included sauces. The curries we had were very good. The lamb curry was not too greasy, and the meat chunks were fairly tender. The butter chicken was decent but average. The fish curry had generous chunks of meat, and again, very good sauce. Something they really got right though was the tandoori chicken. Most places dry out the chicken. Not here. Oh, and the basmati rice has strips of coconut in it! Makes it a bit sweet and REALLY delicious. Special mention. Lastly, the chef even personally came out to check on our food. Maybe it was a marketing gimmick, but I thought it was a really nice touch that he cares. Butter Chicken. We first tried this during the Covid Order Out so I have never eaten in the restaurant. The butter chicken is BOMB - the best Ive ever eaten. I dream about it. The only thing about this place is that it is EXPENSIVE. The butter chicken does not come with rice or naan and it costs $25. The portions are also very small - probably about 6-7 pieces of little chicken bites. The rice is very small but their naan is huge. I would order from this place weekly if the portions matched the prices. I would also say that ordering from the restaurant over the phone, they aren't the MOST friendly people ever but that doesnt really matter to me right now. If they improved their prices by adding more chicken or reducing their price i'd give this place a 10/5. read more

This is next level food. You can forget your past Indian food experiences. This is better. I have been to this restaurant in the past for private functions, and they really do a good job introducing seldom-seen dishes and flavors. Last night I went in on my own, and had an equally good experience. Everything is just at a higher level, from a unique take on an old fashioned, to the Naan bread and menu choices. I ordered a lamb curry, and my excellent waiter included a little taste of the butter chicken, both were outstanding. Even the rice was a higher level. Great attention to detail here. How long has it taken me to get in here, anyway? Seven years? Eight? TOO long! In all fairness, I'm usually out with Allan G, and he's a wimp when it comes to spicy food. I'm having to baby him to get Indian. Usually when I have Indian out, I'm with friends or coworkers. My new boss tried to take me here on my first day of work 2 months ago, but I see now they are closed on Mondays. SO disappointed! So I was meeting with Miss Sha Na Na to give her a copy of the new book before she left on her trip, and we decided to meet for lunch at Guru since neither of us had been. It was delicious! I had the lamb curry, and she had...I think it was a vegetable korma. My only quibble was that it could have used slightly more salt. Our waiter was super friendly efficient, and while sufficiently chatty, he was sharp enough to give us room to chat during our meal without being overly solicitous. Omg. Omg. Omg. What an amazing place to eat. I have never been so satisfied with a meal. Guru is the place to go if you are looking for delicious Indian cuisine. Firstly, the service was superb. Our servers name was Kevin (ask for him, he is great) and I couldn't have been more pleased. From the moment we walked into Guru till we left he made sure we were taken care of, but it definitely wasn't over kill. When I wasn't sure on the wine I wanted he brought me a sample of one he thought I might like... he was right, I loved it. He did the exact same thing with the boyfriends beer. Over the course of the evening he gave us numerous recommendations, all of which were spot on. He was also charismatic and funny! But, onto the food. The butter chicken samosas are amazing, they have won numerous awards in Edmonton and I can definitely see why. For our main course we had more butter chicken, mango chicken, coconut rice and garlic naan bread. Let me just take a moment to tell you that the naan bread is to-die-for. Order it. The food came quickly, and I just wanted to keep eating more as I let it melt in my mouth. God, I wish I was there right now! We ate about half of the food on the table and were stuffed, but Kevin graciously offered to pack up all our food in separate containers so it would be easy for us to take to work the next day. At this point I didn't think I could handle dessert, but we were told these little tin-bit like donuts dipped in honey and put in this creamy sugar sauce was amazing, yet again the recommendation was spot on. Thank goodness this dessert dish was tiny because at this point I was thinking I would need to be rolled out of Guru. What a great restaurant, the dishes are a little pricey, and the location is in the west end, but you get so much food and it's totally worth the drive! Guru undoubtedly has the best butter chicken in Edmonton. I enjoyed lunch at Guru as part of the Yelp Staycation, where we got to try butter chicken, along with the beef vindaloo, cauliflower 65 and naan. Everything was good! That butter chicken though was good x 100: the creamiest, smoothest and best tasting butter chicken ever! The appetizer, the cauliflower 65, was incredible. Deep fried and saucy, it reminded me of chicken wings (random, I know) and I could have eaten an entire plate of this all to myself! I loved the drinks too - chai is always a great drink, especially when eating Indian food, and the chai at Guru was tasty. I also had the opportunity to try mango lassi (smoothie) and I would definitely have that again! It wasn't too sweet and it was colourful, cold and smoooooth. The entire experience was great. The place is clean and classy looking. I loved the art everywhere and there was a cozy vibe about Guru that was very comfortable. Without any more doubt about it - Guru is the place to go. Not to sound cliche but their curries are top notch! Ranking high in flavours and spices. Simply delicious. I could dream of Guru's curries all day long and drool over the simple thought of its beautiful spicy flavours. Within a week of Guru - me and Mitchell have savoured the Chicken Korma - Rajasthani Lamb Curry - Lamb Vindaloo - Chicken Rogan Josh and their special Indian style Poutine definitely not your ordinary poutine - delicious nonetheless. My favourite of them all? Hands down to the Chicken Rogan Josh! Utterly flavourful! I had also requested a spicy level of 8 out of 10 which gives it a good kick of spiciness. YUM! YUM! YUM! Most of our experience were through take-aways - we were such regulars that the manager kindly and generously gave us a voucher for Guru. It was very unexpected but a lovely surprise which we used for during our first dine in on Sunday at Guru. The interior decors is elegant and shine forth the beauty of an Indian fine dining restaurant. We were pleased to be seated near the window of a kitchen which we had the pleasure of watching how the naans were made. Service was not that attentive as when I requested if I could have some gravies added to my leftovers - the server said she did see what she could do but when she came back - nothing was said about the curry and I went home with no added curry sauce - I was pretty sad :( - though I'd happily pay for any extra curry sauce if needed at all. Nonetheless.. the curry was too damn good that it exceeds the down side of the service and the curry was too damn delicious to minus a star. So.. I'm still giving it a full 5 blazing star! This is fabulous five star Indian! I came in for lunch, as I have been meaning to stop in ever since Guru was part of Yelp's Ultimate Science Fair, and they totally rocked it! I knew it was going to be amazing food, but what caught me a little off guard was how phenomenal the service was as well. Shout out to Jai, the other guy that kept coming out and especially to chef for checking on us, explaining dishes and dolling out anecdotes! The naan is simply out of this world! Perfectly cooked, fluffy, slight chew to it, shinny and just mouth watering good. I had 2 apps: The cauliflower 65 (which comes with an amazing back story of why it's called 65, ask your server, ours got chef to explain it to us... love it!) and the aloo chaat which was very unique and quite lovely. Then I just had to have the butter chicken! Oooo wow, so good. Perfectly spiced, not overly rich, just perfect! And I liked that it came with a cooling, refreshing side of melon! I've never seen that before. Oh, and I must mention the mint iced tea, yup, it's a keeper! The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, open but still with a few semi-private areas. You can tell the lunch is mostly a lot of regular customers; a large amount of whom seemed to be groups of retired women... But with sexy, dotting Indian men running the place, I don't blame them - I think I'm becoming a regular! All in all, a wonderful meal. Guru is a different kind of Indian restaurant. Instead of offering the usual all-you-can-eat buffet with an a la carte menu, Guru offers gourmet meals thought up and prepared by an executive chef who obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. The lunch menu are combo plats that include naan bread, vegetables, and rice, while dinner is totally a la carte. We stopped in for lunch. After perusing the selection of appetizers which include chicken tikka and butter chicken samosas, we decided to go straight for our meals. He chose the butter chicken while I opted for the Guru Daal, a combination of five different kinds of lentils in a creamy sauce. Daal is actually my favourite vegetarian choice at an Indian restaurant and I wanted to experience Guru's take on it. Our extremely friendly hostess did a great job of explaining everything about the menu and our choices. While we waited for our meals, we looked around at our very elegant surroundings. Low lights, warm colours, with a windo into the kitchen adding some light and connection. Both of us were taken aback by the artful presentation of our meals. I tasted the butter chicken - rich, with just enough kick in the sauce. My naan daal was yellow-based (it is usually served in a brown butter sauce) making for a much lighter meal. A scoop of white, long-gran rice adorned our plates as well (which did not have any flavour to it, in and of itself), as well as an assortment of grilled vegetables in a light seasoning. I should add at this point that I hate brussel sprouts. The two that faced me went down as easily as the rest of the vegetables, which included potato, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrot ("We like to serve English vegetables with the meals," our hostess explained). My dish had the addition of fried okra, slightly salty and very crispy. My lunch date loved his butter chicken and enjoyed the mildness of it. We ordered an additional piece of naan ($3) to make sure we did not miss any drop of sauce. It was served by the Executive Chef himself who told us a bit about his philosophy when it came to spices. Dessert options would have been mango or bread pudding, but we found the portion sizes to be absolutely perfect and did not want to overdo it. The Guru Daal was $12 while the butter chicken was $15. Most of the lunches were in the $12-$18 range and included tandoori chicken, beef kebabs, and a few other vegetarian dishes. While it is true one can get a buffet for around the same price, the quality of Guru's meals is stellar. As well, I am someone for whom portion size can be an issue and did not feel like gorging myself. Guru is a classy place to enjoy a classy meal - a definite must-try in the west end. read more

Came here for dessert and tea after a truly disappointing lunch at Sherlock Holmes Pub at West Ed Mall (see review). My friend and I ordered a pot of Chai and Coconut Naan... and shared with the host and our server our awful lunch story. They were kind and funny and offered to make us "chocolate naan", which is not on the menu, but is their most popular dessert - even having to "ask for it". Our experience at Guru was as good as it gets. The chai was perfect - subtly sweet, hot, with just enough spice. Update! My wife and I went back here for my bday and it was as epic as the first time. We started off with some drinks. Kingfisher beer FTW! We ordered a few appies- veggie shots and veggie samosas. The veggie shots were amazing. I've never had anything like this. Bite size morsels of vegetable paste and some other flavour bursting ingredients contained in some sort of baked cup.....holy hell. Heaven!! As always their samosas are to die for. When we embarked on our gluttonous dinner journey we ordered the butter chicken of course. You have to order their butter chicken. It's the best in YEG. We also feasted on the Goan Shrimp Curry which was amazing. It had amazing flavour and the size of the shrimp were perfect. Top that off with coconut rice and garlic naan bread and we were leaving home with next day lunch. Both times I've been here the staff have been fantastic. The manager walks around playing the awesome host - chatting with customers, the wait staff fantastic as well. Look, if you want awesome Indian food and great service. GO HERE!!! read more

My first Indian food experience was with the Yelp group at Guru! Hey, I never claimed to be a "foodie", so don't judge! The service was top notch! The waiter was happy to answer our questions about "what's least spicy", and the chef let us make naan bread! They definitely had their A-game on for us. Judging by their Yelp rating though, they always have their A-game on. To drink, I enjoyed a Mango Lassi (just like a smoothie). It was heavenly! We tried the Cauliflower 65 to start. It was not spicy. It had spice in it, for sure, but it wasn't hot. I really enjoyed this dish to be honest. Couldn't tell it was cauliflower at all. It looked like boneless wings! For the entree, I went with the butter chicken. I very much enjoyed dipping the naan bread in the sauce. One thing I noticed, they have private dining space. One room holds 8 people, and another room holds over 25. And these are PRIVATE rooms, not just a curtain wall. I've posted pics of the menus. They have great options for dietary restrictions (dairy free, vegan, gluten free). The pricing though, seems pretty steep. Butter chicken is $22, plus an additional $5 for rice, and $7 for naan bread. Those prices make Guru a special occasion kind of place IMO. read more

Indian food is one of my favorites and this place is the real deal. There are so many good Indian places in Edmonton but this place really impressed me. If you want a regular Indian Restaurant there are plenty to be found in Edmonton. Guru steps it up a bit in ambience, presentation and quality though. The Chef came out and talked to us and was very enthusiastic about his food. We tried the Beef Vindaloo, Cauliflower 65, Fish Pakoras, saffron rice and of course Naan! It was all so mouth wateringly great. We were here with a large group of people and one cool thing the Chef did was give us all a little instruction in how to make our own Naan! This was so cool. We got to actually prepare th dough and cook it. We even had enough to take some home with us. read more

OK. So. I liked it. But... ...I didn't fall in love with it, especially not for the price. Maybe we didn't order the "right" things -- veggie samosas, saffron rice, garlic naan, lamb curry and beef vindaloo -- but it was only "all right" to me. Don't get me wrong, the naan bread is probably the best naan I've ever had. Ever. I also really enjoyed the veggie samosas and the presentation and sauces that came with it. Still, my palate thinks the down-home taste of Shafi's samosas are the best in the city (until I taste something different). I think where things started to just go "okay" for me was the curries. They were tasty. Just not $21 worth of tasty. If I were paying that much money for one dish, I want it to make my eyes roll back in my head. It didn't. The interior is beautiful and the service attentive. Definitely a date place, classy, and I appreciated the head chef coming out to the tables to see if everything was all right. That added an extra level of class to the place, in my opinion. Maybe we should've ordered one of the tandoori options or something else, but overall, while I liked my experience, it tasted good... I would take my fine dining dollars elsewhere. read more

My aunt and uncle were in town and wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner. It was our first time as well but we had heard good things. I was easily able to make a reservation for 4 on a Saturday for that same evening. When we arrived it wasn't too busy yet but still a bit early at 6pm. We were shown to a nice private dining area that had about 5 or 6 tables. It was nice because it was away from the crowds in the main part of the restaurant. For appetizers we had butter chicken samosas, cauliflower 65 and the pepper kalamari. The butter chicken samosas were different, and I'm sure a westernized twist on a traditional samosa, but it was still good and the chicken inside was tender. The cauliflower 65 was deep fried and it kind of reminded me of some kind of Chinese sweet and sour dish. The calamari was just OK, I thought. I wouldn't need to order the cauliflower or calamari next time. I could do without the mango lassi drink as well, which I got based on some recommendations on Yelp. For mains we had butter chicken, mango chicken, fish moilee, and the lamb chicken kebab. We also ordered some naan and two sides of rice (regular and coconut). All the main dishes were quite tasty and flavourful and I would order each of them again. The naan was the best naan I've had and it was especially fresh, made to order. The coconut rice had actual coconut flakes in it which was different. The service was good here. The server checked in with us often and our waters were refilled regularly without having to ask for it. The wrong wine was brought to the table but it was corrected very quickly. At one point near the end of our meal, someone, possibly from management asked us how our dinner was. That was nice but it would have been better if he had introduced himself. All in all, good food, good service... just make sure to bring your money. And your stretchy pants. read more

Fine Indian Cuisine. Emphasis on the fine! This place is so fantastic. I'll start by saying I can't handle spicy. As in - at all. This stops me from enjoying a lot of Indian food. But there is so many great dishes at Guru. The environment is clean, dimly lit, and perfect for a classy evening out. One thing that really impressed me was that our server was wearing a suit. Now that's classy. The mango lassi was very sweet so be sure you like condensed milk. We had the cauliflower 65 to start. It had the perfect amount of flavor. It was deep fried, covered in a light sauce and sprinkled with green onions. It was awesome. For the main I had butter chicken. It was creamy and flavorful and fantastic. Of course the best part is piling it onto your nan bread and then piling that pile into your mouth. We literally had no room for desert so it was out of the question today, but I do love indian desserts. If you've not been, class it up one night and take your special someone here for a delicious meal with great service. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Edmonton. Not "Indian restaurant", my favorite restaurant, period. My recommendation: butter chicken, coconut rice, garlic nan... you cannot go wrong!! For an incredible explosion of flavor, must try the cauliflower appetizer. Too good to describe. Normally I stay away from deserts in ethnic restaurants (just usually not my taste), but their desert "chocolate nan" is not to be missed! The chai tea is also amazing. read more

This is probably one of the few Indian places in Edmonton I like for Indian food! It's actually s fine dining Indian restaurant with great interiors and good atmosphere. The food is absolutely amazing. It's all a la carte, no buffet, which is what I prefer. I took my mother out here for Mother's Day lunch, and the food like always was good. Unfortunately, the waiter was not very attentive and we were sitting with our meals for a while before we got our naans. So it was quiet bizarre that such a place would host like that. Anyways maybe it was the waiter we had that day. Overall, if they can improve their service I would defiantly be giving them a 5 star rating!!! read more

We absolutely love guru!!!!!!!!! The food is amazing, I enjoy my butter chicken but guru makes a butter chicken pinini during lunch time I must say I have never had butter chicken like this before it's simply amazing. We always finish off with the chai tea that really is an amazing end to a wonderful meal. Love this place. read more

Not having been here in about 5 years makes a big difference. In fact, I can honestly say that when I did come the first time, it was quite good, but nothing to express one extreme way or another. Time, or palate memory, changes things...thank goodness for the better :-) I would like to give Guru a 4.5 as I did truly enjoy it and would easily recommend coming to enjoy the food. Again, this was part of my Yelp Staycation sampling of West End establishments and here we sampled the Cauliflower 65, Butter Chicken, Beef Vindaloo, and Delhi Vegetable Masala and Chai Tea. The Cauliflower 65 is an appetizer sauteed in spices and is easily shared with 4 people who do not want to spoil their dinner as there is enough to have a nice few bites :-) It has a slight spicy "kick", however not enough to worry in my opinion. I ordered the Beef Vindaloo which was very very tender (and not fatty :-) ) and just enough heat to enjoy without the heat not overpowering the taste of the meat and sauce. It was perfect on such a chilly afternoon as was the Butter Chicken with such a BEAUTIFUL colour of the sauce!! Actually, I couldn't get over how beautiful the colour of the Butter Chicken and Dehli Vegetable Masala was and both so very tasty; the Butter Chicken wasn't so thick with sauce and meat pieces good size and the Dehli Vegetable Masala was very tasty as well as beautiful with the green peas and carrots along with the Masala sauce prepared. To end the meal, I enjoyed the Chai Tea which, again, on a chilly day was perfect. Not watery and just perfect without sugar, though it is not sweet to begin with which I like :-) read more

I am writing this review enthusiastically after attending a Yelp-related here on a Saturday afternoon. And how lucky I was to come here as it was my very first time and definitely not my last. From start to finish, the lunch service was so great! Everyone from the wait-staff to the chef himself, were super friendly and enthusiastic about their food, and rightly so as it was delicious! To start, we all had the Cauliflower 65, which is named after the famous dish itself at a restaurant in Mumbai (apparently it was item #65 on this restaurant's menu and became really popular with guests) ! So Guru, inspired by this dish, has made something to reflect this delicious popular dish - breaded and deep-fried cauliflower bits smothered in a yummy seasoned marinade! A sure hit with everyone at the table! It was enough to feed 4 to start. As a main course, we had the option of butter chicken, beef vindaloo, or delhi vegetable masala.... they are known for their butter chicken so I had to go with that option! It was soooo creamy and spiced perfectly and came with soft pieces of chicken and rice as well as house-made naan. Can I please speak for a moment about the naan and roti they make in house? It's cooked in their tandoori oven at a piping 400 degrees! After which, is brushed with clarified butter and it comes out perfectly crispy yet soft and becomes the perfect tool to dip into your sauce using your hands. The chef even let us try our hand at making our own piece of naan, starting with the pre-made dough, and how to use our hands to stretch the dough by tossing it back and forth between hands, before he places each piece on the sides of the oven where they stick and bake up quickly, before being peeled off with special tools! So cool and interactive! As a beverage, I was able to try the mango lassi (omg yum!!) and their chai tea (also yum!!) Overall, the food and service at Guru was outstanding and will make me a repeat customer for sure! Thank you for such a great experience! P.S.
