Vegan food is here!!! NO soy, dairy, or gluten! Since becoming a meatless, soy free, dairy free, and gluten free person for health reasons, I've been really careful of where to dine out. I do a lot of research before heading to a restaurant. A lot of vegan restaurants serve mock meats (soy) and have bread (gluten). I had Ethiopian food many years ago at Desta and enjoyed it. However, I wasn't sure what the injera bread was made from so doing a Google search lead me to the recipe. It is made of teff gain, which is gluten free!! Win-win for me! It is one of the smallest grains too! Three days of the week - Saturday, Wednesday, & Friday - Gursha has a vegetarian buffet. It will be a mix of 6 items from their vegetarian entrees. I let them choose 6 items for me. The following is from their website Shiro Watt - Split pea or check pea flour cooked with red onions, oil or butter, red pepper (berebere), garlic and Spice. Gomen - Fresh collard greens cooked and seasoned with oil onion, ginger, garlic, herbs and spice. Misir Watt - A stew made from organic split red lentils cooked with onion, oil spiced red pepper, flavored with ginger, garlic, and cardamom. Atiklett - Cabbage mixed with chunks of potatoes and carrot cooked with onion, flavored with ginger, garlic, and turmeric. Yekik Watt - Seasoned yellow split peas slowly cooked with oil, onion, ginger, turmeric and garlic. Fosolia - Fresh green beans and carrots cooked with oil, onions, fresh garlic, jalapeno, ginger, and salt. Mushroom with potato - Fresh sliced mushroom and potato cooked with onions, oil, fresh garlic, ginger, herbs, salt and spices. Dinich Wott - Chunks of potatoes cooked with onions, garlic seasoned in tomato and red pepper sauce and salt. Key sir (beetroot) salad - key sir mixed with carrot, potato, onion, lemon juice, oil, and jalapeno. My plate consisted of Gomen, Fosolia, Dinich Wott, Key Sir, Shiro Watt, Atiklett. They were all plated on top of injera. I also received two additional injera on the side. I loved everything I got. If you don't like beets then you won't like the Key Sir. My favorite is the Shiro Watt. It was so flavorable and delicious. I could taste the spices. It was soooo much food that I wasn't able to finish!! I ate only 2/3 of it. I was asked if I wanted more injera or even more food. I just couldn't! Oh yeah, when I asked for water, I got a bottle of water from the fridge. That was fine with me. Damm that was some good food! The lamb and chicken tips were really good - the spicy option in my opinion was not that hot - just a little kick with more flavor. Even the veggie sample platter tasted great (and I am not big on meatless food). Also, you have to try the Ethiopian tea. The service was great as well - very attentive and responsive to our request. This is a small family run business that is a pleasant surprise given the location it's in. Don't let the random crack head roaming around the parking lot scare you (it's next door to a liquor store) because there is a diverse mix of people who come here because the food is that good. read more

My husband and I found this place on our first trip to Atlanta ... it was only a 4 day trip but we went here once for lunch and once for dinner. It was delicious! We always try to find Ethiopian restaurants when we travel and I have to say this was one of THE best! We had the vegetarian combo both times with extra sides of the Yekik Watt and Shiro Watt. I can't say how wonderful everything was. Looking forward to going back on my next trip to Atlanta! This is the first time I ever had beets in an Ethiopian restaurant. UPDATE: I can't figure out this restaurant's vacation schedule. They were closed for many months in 2017, then opened again, and are now closed as of December 2017. But their signs are still up, which makes me think they may re-open at some point. If you want to eat here, just call ahead, I guess. ******** I love Ethiopian food but hate driving to the other side of town to get it. When Gursha opened up, my husband and I decided to give it a try to see how it compared to the more well-known Ethiopian establishments in Atlanta. I could not have been more impressed; Gursha is now one of my favorite restaurants! We have visited Gursha three or four times, and since we eat vegetarian almost exclusively, we order the veggie platter each time. The veggies are super fresh and colorful and are not overcooked. There also isn't too much oil/butter, which has been an issue with other Ethiopian restaurants. The veggies are nicely spiced but not overwhelmingly so; sensitive stomachs should be just fine. There is plenty of injera offered, and they even have gluten-free injera if you ask. My favorites from the veggie platter are the green beans and the greens. The beets are delicious as well. I highly recommend Gursha. The food is fantastic, the service is great, and the restaurant is very, very clean. The location leaves something to be desired, but that's only from the outside. Go anyway and have a filling, delicious meal for a very low price! Although we have only gone by ourselves, I think Gursha would be really fun with a group--especially if you ordered their coffee ceremony, which I am dying to try. I'm very glad Gursha has come to Smyrna. They were recently featured in the Smyrna/Vinings Brightside, and I hope they'll continue to get lots of business so I can continue to get my Ethiopian fix without having to leave my zip code. read more

I didn't know that there is an Ethiopian restaurant in this area, but I'm glad I found it. I had the vegetarian platter which has beet salad, collard greens, lentils, cabbage and potatoes, & a couple of other things I probably forgot. It is all really good food and I got a pretty good portion size. The young lady, at the register, was really nice. She even offered to bring it out to my car when it was ready. The order was quick. Gursha is a prototypical hole in the wall kind of place...with really good food. I had the beef sambusa (very similar to a samosa), which was delicious - very nicely seasoned meat, and the Yesiga Tibis, which was also delicious. No shortage of flavor here. We had a big group, and everyone was very happy with their meal. Service was a bit spotty, but given that there was 1 person covering the entire front of the house (and they seemed to getting a good number of takeout orders), so I'll cut them some slack. Mmmmmm Ethiopian. Gursha is a notch below Desta but it's in a much more convenient location for me so that gets my fifth star. It's tucked into an unassuming strip of shops a mile or so away from Smyrna Market Village. I have been a few times now and the same server is always there. I think she's the owner's daughter....she's very nice and helpful. I'm sure I'm missing out on some hidden gem on the menu, but I've been getting the vegetarian plate every visit since the first. The beef tibs on visit #1 were great and perfectly tender (they'll offer to make them mild and put the serious spice in a cup for you) but not all that much food since it doesn't come with a side. The vegetarian plate is a monster. A huge piece of injera splayed out with scoops of each of their vegetable options on top. It'll getcha full. No idea what's what on there but most of the scoops have a nice kick to them and all of them are very flavorful. It's $10 or so and could definitely be two meals if you're not a glutton. read more

First let me say this, this is my first time having Ethiopian cuisine. I didn't know what to expect so I went with a "first time for everything" mentality. Let's talk about it. Shall we? When the Misses and I first walked in, we had the place to ourselves. That would be alarming to most people but since I am a bit of a recluse, I thought this was perfect! We sat down and perused the menu...one thing I want to mention, the online menu is totally different from the restaurant menu (just a heads up). Anyway, we started with the beef sambusa. This is similar to a samosa but has more seasoning and flavor PLUS it isn't fried as hard as the samosa. They were awesome. We were given two but I wish we were given four! Lol. That's how good they were. Next we ordered the veggie combo and the yebeg tibs. The veggie combo consisted of six different choices served on injera flatbread. I found the injera to compliment the veggies because it has a slight sour taste to it. To me, it gave the veggies an extra kick. The Misses found the veggies were good by themselves. The yebeg tibs were really good! This is a lamb dish served with homemade seasonings, onions and green peppers. It's also provided with injera that was folded neatly next to it. We both liked it. The Misses and I both agreed that it would be better served over white rice! Lol! I guess that's the Asian in both of us! Lol! Also, it wouldn't be traditional Ethiopian served with rice so I'm glad it was prepared in authentic fashion. Bottom line...go give it a try. It is really good food and the Mom and Daughter that work in there are really nice! Its hard to find sincere people that takes pride in what they are doing. Customer, please read the menu carefully and ask your server whether or not the restaurant will provide all menu contents as advertised. I like Ethiopian cuisine a lot. Yesterday when I went to Gursha, the menu advertised salad with their vegetarian platter selection. The waitress did not bring a salad with my meal. When I informed the waitress that my meal did not have salad, she said "we do not usually serve salad with this meal"... I then politely asked, "then why do you advertise salad with the vegetarian platter...I actually looked forward to having a salad". The waitress then said "we will fix it"... Well, I thought that meant 1. the waitress would bring a salad or 2. the waitress would charge less than the $10.99 advertised price. I later discovered that it meant neither. The waitress brought my bill charging the full 10.99. I refused to pay 10.99 because I didn't get the salad. The waitress then checked back with the owner and provided a 10 percent discount. I was satisfied with that until the owner came out and said "we never serve salads with that option, we need to change the menu"... then she pointed to my friend and said "ask her, she will tell you we never serve salads"... (side note: my friend had visited the restaurant before)... BUT THAT's IRRELEVANT! The owner was very rude and upset with me over the restaurants false advertising, as it was my fault. I will not return to Gursha ever due to the owners poor attitude and the employees lack of professionalism and quality customer service... More improtantly , I will not return because I witnessed the waitress using her phone at the kitchens food prep area... Food safety actually is more important than poor customer service. Although it's in an odd location, we found Gursha to be fantastic. In the sense of a classic Ethiopian restaurant, the variety of legumes and veggies were well seasoned and delicious. Neither of us are really meat eaters, so the vegetarian combo was perfect. The lighting is bright, with open seating, and they do have a television playing. Friendly family always greets us when we show up. The meal is incredible! We've had a lot of Ethiopian from everywhere: Seattle, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Tampa... And this cook knows her stuff. We wanted to try something different so we chose Gursha. I had read other recent reviews so I was not surprised to be the only patrons at the restaurant. This did not frighten me since the reviews, while few, were all good. We were very glad that our server explained the menu to us and made some recommendations. We started with appetizers of Beef and Veggie Sambusas which were delicious filled pastries served with some fresh veggies & ranch dip. For our entrees, we had the Shiro watt (sort of a soup of pureed chick pea flour served in a crock pot), the Yesiga Tibis (sort of a spicy chunky beef stew) and the Veggie Combination. The traditional way to eat Ethiopian food is to use the Injera (brown crepe-like bread) as a vehicle to get the rest of the food into your mouth. The server offered to bring us a fork if we preferred (which we did). The food was delicious and filling. We had plenty to eat and asked for a "puppy-bag" which our poor puppy won't see! :) We decided we like Ethiopian food and we are happy to have Gursha in our neighborhood! read more

I've now become addicted to Ethiopian food, this is a great place in Smyrna to get some. It's home cooked in the back kitchen. Recommend for newbies to get the Yesiga Tibis which is cut up pieces of meat in onions and spices and comes with the injera bread (which is a sponge like texture). You tear off pieces of the bread and scoop up the food in the bread. Delicious. Environment and area nearby isn't great but restaurant is clean, service is friendly and food is good. The restaurant was in run down area and it was not cleaned either. Food was okay compared to other restaurant. I purchased the restaurant.com certificate which is valid from Mon - Thursday and gives $10 off on a minimum purchase of $20. So my final bill was $25 but when showed to the waiter she said, I'll ask the manager and she said we have called so many times restaurant.com but they never respond ( which is very unlikely as I've been using it since long) so she can't accept so I said I paid for it then she rudely said I don't care you just pay the bill. Anyway, I am not from Atlanta but I won't visit them again as there are so many good options with the same price range available. This was the first Ethiopian restaurant I have ever been to. The food was amazingly fresh and flavorful. I especially loved the veggie platter of greens, cabbage, beets, and assorted lentils. The meats were all delicious and tender as well. The service was wonderful and everyone was very friendly. There's not always variety in Smyrna restaurants, so Gursha is a great option. The family that runs it is great and the food is fantastic. The physical space may not be appealing to some, but the only atmosphere you should be considering is the one surrounding your taste buds. Get the platter and try everything the first time and you'll discover the red lentils will become a favorite if you enjoy spicy foods. read more

This place needs more love. Granted this was my first time trying Ethiopian food but was thoroughly impressed. Tried the Zilzil which was spicy to my liking, especially with the curry sauce added. Yelp says they have it on Wed, Fri, and Sat. Since today is Friday, I thought I was in for a treat.
