Have you ever just let Yelp find the nearest well reviewed restaurant and then gone with it, even though you know nothing about the type of food? Yeah, well I did that today. And I'll do it again. Toyin (no idea how it's pronounced or what it means) is African food. So when I entered, the gal behind the counter thought I might have been in the wrong place. But I told her I'd never had this before and I'd like to give it a try. "What do you recommend," I asked. So here's what she brought me. Served in a to go styrofoam box even though I was eating here was a massive pile of two types of rice, some sort of bean paste (maybe), a few fried plantains and two hunks of meat that I am pretty sure were beef (but could have been goat I suppose) cooked in a tomato sort of sauce. Surprisingly not very spicy at all but it was certainly filling and it was absolutely a friendly experience. Bummer that they only have a cooler of Coke products and a few ginger beers. I'd have really loved to have a good African beer with this.

Had Egusi Soup w/ goat and fufu. My tastebuds and stomach are very happy now, although I was a little disappointed they don't have chicken. Not everyone knows how to cook goat correctly, but here they do it right. The fufu was perfect texture/consistency and the serving (ball) was very big for one person (but I'm not complaining). I'm VERY PICKY about West African food, especially Nigerian and Ghanian. I've spent time in Nigeria and developed a love for (most of) the food. So whenever I'm traveling to a large city the first thing that I do is find a good W. African restaurant. And Toyin doesn't disappoint. I was spending a week here in the Atlanta area and found this place on Yelp. I drove 30 minutes to get here and I'm glad that I did. I'll add it to my list of "must eat here" places whenever I'm visiting ATL. There are NO West African restaurants in my hometown (Portland, OR) so I'm always craving :(

I LOVE African food and was happy to find a new place to try since I was further away from home. The staff was very unfriendly with me regardless of how friendly I was the whole encounter. I asked what they had since the computer screen with the menu display wasn't showing the menu. He pointed to the screen and said, it's there. I waited for it to change and it never did. So I asked if they had few traditional dishes (by name) all of which he said they didn't have. He said they only have vegetarian options and no meat dishes of any kind and that they are still working on it ( it was still a few hours until close and it seemed like they were already out of food) When the next guest comes in, he asked what they have (because the menu still wasn't to be seen any where). He lists off a fish dish, goat dish, and beef stew. Right in front of me like he didn't just tell me they didn't have any lol I had to laugh it off because it was so ridiculous. I finally ask for the Red stew with beef and asked him if there was any fish in it at all since I'm allergic. He said no. So long story short, I paid a crap ton for a box of rice. LOTS of rice and 2 tiny pieces of beef that were 80% bone. To top it off, I believe he used a spoon that had fish on it because my lips swelled up like a puffer fish from the cross contamination. They only got a second star because the stew actually did taste really good but I wouldn't go here again due to all the other issues. Just felt like I wasn't wanted there :/

My favorite Nigerian restaurant! I drive all the way from Gwinnett here every other Saturday. I wish she was open on Sundays but man must rest abi?! I like pretty much EVERYTHING she makes and since she's Yoruba, its Yoruba style. I think my fav is the moi-moi although i wish hers has hard boiled eggs in it but thats ok. Would probably make it less available than it is now which is already not very available. lol. I also like her Efo riro and Egusi soup. Her Ayaymase stew is also great and i like to order at least 2 puff-puffs to eat on my journey back home with a bottle of Vita-Malt. I brought my friend who was visiting from London here and she was amazed. I must say Nigerian food in London is amazing but Toyin's is just as good!

Fantastic, absolutely authentic I had the efo riro and the egusi the owner Aunty toyin let me get half and half. I'm Nigerian so I know what the food is supposed to taste like. I was visiting Atlanta and I had to try this place, it has the highest rating for a Nigerian restaurant. Aunty toyin was pleasant and accommodating she interacted with all customers as the owner should.

If you aren't paying attention you can miss the place. The neighborhood is on the sketchy end of Austell road across from some shady looking apartment complex. There is a neighborhood corner store next door with some unsavory individuals posted up outside so beware! The restaurant is small but it has about 5 - 6 tables for dine in. Their food score was a 85 B, that almost discouraged me but the place was packed. these rude ass Africans ahead of me giving the Spanish lady (who was fixing the to go boxes and ringing people up) a hard time ordered $50 worth of food so that's why I stayed. Africans are cheap and will needle you to death on they shouldn't pay full price on something lol hey don't be mad at me take that up with Nigerians lol I've been to Africa many times and it's true! The Spanish lady was very pleasant and there was a Spanish lady cooking in the back, I WAS BLOWN AWAY but then again us Latinas can do it all. **shrugs** hey Im puerto rican in a west african restuarant and know the food as good as any west african. I saluted her for her service and left a tip in the tip jar. The food looked fresh and smelled good. I ordered the vegetable with tripe and goat. She gave me two meaty pieces of tripe and 1 huge hunk of goat, it comes with pounded yam. My order was like $13 and some change, not baf considering if i made it at home it woulsve cost more than that. I got home, heated up my food (suprisingly it was still warm from the restaurant but I wanted it steaming hot) The pounded yam was so billowy and smooth, it was like someone's grandmother made it! The vegetable was to die for!!!! THE BEST I'VE HAD IN ATLANTA THUS FAR BESIDES WHEN I MAKE IT AT HOME. it was seasoned to perfection and spicy! This is true west African food! I can't wait to try their other dishes. I got great food and great customer service. Very impressed, I had low expectations but they went above and beyond with the food and the service! I will most certainly be back if I'm in the neighborhood.

The best part of the meal was probably the seasonings they have sitting on the side of the counter where you order. I do not really know who works there. First there was a lady, then there was this kid, but the kid was sitting in the lounge when I first walked in and stood there for about 5 minutes at the bar before the lady in the back who was having a conversation with the lady who makes the food I guess came from behind and walked around to the register. Their menu has absolutely no pricing. I had the peanut butter soup, which was good, but a little disappointing because the majority of the meat was nothing but fat, and there was not that much meat in it honestly. The potato that was in it literally looked like that had just cut it in two and threw it in the soup. It was good, and not that bad portion wise, but if I had known it was almost $20 I probably would have gotten something else. I was hoping to try the hookah while I waited, but evidently all of the hookahs were in need of maintenance, so that was a bust. Would like to go back in the future, maybe when they have a crowd of people or something, but overall I was disappointed.

In fact, they said they ordered from Uber Eats from them a few weeks ago and the food never showed up. They called and couldn't get an answer and when they drove over, the place was closed. I'm sympathetic to anyone who is having trouble running their business due to Covid staffing shortages. And I'm even more sympathetic to anyone that has to close their business due to death in the family. I just don't think it's too much to ask that people update their voicemail greeting, social media pages and / or website when they have these emergencies. It is very hard to support small businesses when the business hours are unknown / inconsistent. Tip / Note to anyone trying to find the building. The signage out front (close to the road) says ' 1644 Tattoo Grill & Lounge .' The word "Tracxx" is very small and beneath the logo. And the '1644' refers to their address. The word "Tattoo" is on the sign because of the tattoo shop residing in the same 'plaza.' We actually drove by it the first time because the navigation was garbage and we thought the sign was for a spot called Tattoo Grill and Lounge. Lol. Don't laugh - remember Tattoo was Mr. Rourke's sidekick so I'm sure there are people with the nickname Tattoo. Lol.

I've been to Nations Cafe a couple of times and I've had pretty good experiences, though there are definitely some areas for improvement. After speaking with some of the employees, I've learned that the main cuisine of the restaurant is Nigerian food. This was super cool to me, there are not many Nigerian restaurants in the area! This place gives you the full Nigerian experience. There are stews, soups, fufu, meats, seafood, vegetarian options, you name it! The menu is large and gives you plenty of options. I tend to stick with the stews when I order. The first time I visited, I ordered their beef stew and it was absolutely delicious. The stew itself packs a ton of flavor, there is definitely tomato, peppers and a whole lot of different spices in it. The beef was tender and flavorful as well. Each stew comes with two different sides. The jollof rice is a must! The rice is cooked perfectly and has so much flavor as well. When you combine the stew and rice together it is a flavor explosion, in a good way! Some other sides that I think are decent are the fried plantains and the cabbage. Those sides don't each touch the jollof rice in terms of quality. I tried to get the collard greens on my last visit, but they were out. Sad! I also recently got the hen stew. The stew was great yet again, but the hen was definitely dry. I definitely prefer the beef stew. While the food is generally good, the big problem of the restaurant is the service. Don't get me wrong, the people working there are super nice and pleasant to speak with. However every time I walk in, there isn't someone to accommodate me. My guess is that they are just surprised that I actually want to eat there, so this will get a slight pass. Throughout the meal though, the servers never check up on me. They are basically there to take my order, deliver the food and that's it! They could definitely do better! Another problem in my eyes are the prices. I spend about $30 on a single meal there, it's a bit hefty of a price. They also charge for water, which I didn't realize the first time. Again, this would've been helped on with better service! Although the restaurant does have some problems, I think the uniqueness of the food and its quality will have me going back. I certainly think you should give Nations Cafe a chance, it is so much better than the rating would suggest!
