Teddy's Beach Diner - Couldn't get any more 'seafront'

Teddy's Beach Diner

A friend and I were spending a long weekend in Hastings, joining others to stay in St Leonards on…read moreSea where we were renting a holiday home for a few days. We arrived into St Leonards Warrior Square station around lunch time and were planning on having lunch before checking in to our accommodation. The point of which is that we walked from the station to the seafront (downhill to the sea, then turn right along the waterfront) to Teddy's Beach Diner. We were here in early November and it was forecast for rain a couple of days before, but on the day it was blue skies and sunshine. Which as it turns out meant that the balcony of Teddy's was a perfect place to perch for a pre-lunch drink and then food in the sunshine. And being on the 'beach' side of the road, the unobstructed views over the water are just amazing. The staff here are just lovely; they were engaging and we had brief but meaningful conversations - even about as mundane a topic as our choice for wine. For one server it was their first day at work. The service was uniformly friendly and efficient at every point. We sat outside but the service included keeping in regular contact with us to ensure that we had everything that we needed. The menu is as the name implies, a Diner style i.e. informal and American influenced. There are some seafood choices available given the seaside location, but as we were planning to have seafood at dinner I went for the more standard burger for lunch. It was very tasty indeed, served on a wooden chopping board. Brioche bun, high stack of (homemade) burger meat with tasty bacon and lovely pickles, and a little tin of fries to the side. My friend had a half rack of ribs, which was plenty big enough for lunch - covered most of the plate! We returned here twice for drinks over the course of the weekend. Sat indoors then as it was later in the day. Tables are a good distance away from each other so no crowded feeling. We even scored some free homemade popcorn with our drinks. Don't often find something for nothing. Prices are very reasonable too - both food and drink. In short this place ticks every box - comfortable, friendly service, amazing views, tasty food and it won't break the bank. Definitely recommend.

It…read morehas a "Michelin Bib" which, for the uninitiated (like me, prior to googling it), denotes good quality food at moderate prices which is a nice touch, as it allows reasonably priced restaurants to gain recognition next to the big boys. Hmmm, that was a rather long sentence, there will be less of those as the review goes on as they can often make paragraphs look intimidatingly drawn out and give the impression they are a bore to read, despite the content, which I can promise will be nothing short of fascinating. 51 words. Get in. Anyway, I'm sure you'd rather hear about the restaurant then have me waffle on about sentence length, and I have to say it is outstanding. First off, I recommend booking, certainly on the weekends as it can pack out. There is a lovely, little pub next door called the Horse and Groom which acts as a 'feeder' (not my words!) for St Clements, which makes choosing where to go for a drink beforehand a very straightforward process. The staff were friendly, and 'well paced'. By this, I mean they gave us enough time to peruse the menu and didn't clear the table before we were done, which is a sign of good training and an experienced team. They offer a set menu at £26.50 for three courses which has three choices per course. One of the mains is vegetarian, however the starters were all meat and fish dishes. Sinfully, there was NO chocolate option for dessert. Quite why I stayed is a mystery. The full menu is around £16.50 for a main, with starters coming in at the £8 mark and desserts at just over a fiver. I went for the Pork Terrine with Sourdough and Picalilli, Seabass with lemon, corriander and Thai Salad and Chocolate Truffle cake with cognac soaked raisons and pistachio ice cream. It was all delicious. Like insanely good. With the wine (some chilean thing I picked to impress my companion. I find the trick with wine is that you don't have to know a lot, just more than your date), it came to around £100 for two of us. Since going, St Clements has become the place I take anyone I want to impress whenever I'm in this neck of the woods.

Will be top of my list of local recommendations, take aways and home catering (have added their number to my mobile, was so fantastic). The depth of flavour of their lovingly-prepared jerk chicken, goat curry and fish curry (unlike you have ever tasted before - seriously moreish!) will seriously surprise newcomers. The sypmphony of flavours of the fish with chilli and scotch bonnet pepper sauce was SoooOOooo unique, asked to buy a batch of the sauce to take home!!! They really ought to bottle that sauce! 5 stars as a new local restaurant with the courage to try a new concept. Keep up the outstanding efforts!!! It was highly recommended to us through word of mouth. Absolutely worth a meal here!!!! It will be unlike anything you have experienced for quite some time. African passion on a plate.

Highly recommend .. A must before you leave Hastings!

Between the characterful setting of Pier Nine at Zanzibar and the delicious, unique combinations of…read morewell presented food it feels alien to not recommend dining there. I attended with three others for a Sunday dinner, which is a set menu with a choice of six or seven dishes per course, at the reasonable price of £14 to £37; dependent on the number of courses and dishes selected. Starting with a cocktail selected from a slightly unorthodox and restrictive menu (martinis will always be served a la James Bond, without asking), I opted for the Shady Grove Cooler; gin and ginger beer, which had a distinct and pleasant crispness. Sadly the wine menu as a whole could have benefitted from being replaced, as it was sticky and dogeared. On a more personal note, the descriptions of the wine were written in an overfamiliar tone, in the style of an innocent smoothie bottle. The description of Laurent Chardigny [sic] Pinor Noir as "like a nun on a tightrope" was particularly grating. For my first course I ordered gazpacho, served with a generously sized bunch of grapes stirred in. Despite this choice, it proved to be a refreshing flavour, pairing perfectly with the almond and watercress garnish. Once I had finished this, I encountered the first of my issues with Pier Nine; the wait for my main course to be served. Whilst I understand that a busy restaurant may lead to delays in service, when our orders were placed there was only one other group of four in the restaurant. Of course, having dishes arrive in rapid succession is undesirable, but I'm thankful that I was accompanied by skilled conversationalists. After a thirty minute wait, my main course arrived. Once here, the spinach and caramelised onion strudel - closer in presentation to being a filo pastry fajita - was delicious, and served with a sweet Greek salad, the feta providing much needed salt flavours whilst tomato and cucumber kept the dish moist. My companions however, were not all as lucky. Both the lamb tagine and roast poussin were served on a wooden paddle, but as this was impractical for the actual eating of these dishes, a separate plate was provided. In the case of the poussin, the dish as served was served dry, with no gravy provided until requested. I fear this points to awareness of how the dishes will be eaten lacking somewhat. My dessert, a frozen vanilla parfait with strawberry compote and stem ginger shortbread was exceptional. It is, sadly, rare that vanilla is able to be a standout flavour, and always welcome when it manages to be something more than shorthand for neutrality. The shortbread was crisp, embedded with wonderfully chewy stem ginger. The strawberry compote was accompanied by fresh, succulent strawberries and provided the perfect mid-note to the chord. Sadly it was also served alongside a 25 minute wait. Finally we were able to select from six locally sourced cheeses; including unpasteurised, goat, and sheep's milk cheeses. These were served with "artisan" crackers, and membrillo; very beneficial to some of the selection. The highlight was the beautifully mild Molcomb blue, combining the mature tart of blue cheese with a beautiful creaminess. I would also recommend the Winterdale Shaw - a clean-tasting hard cheese and the Flower Marie - a sheep's milk cheese which bucked expectations by tasting of something other than lanolin. The environment is interesting, decorated with a variety of coastal themed shabby-chic dressings, and hefty raw wood tables. Combined with the chandeliers and the soundtrack of royalty-free chillout classics gives an atmosphere which is as unfocused as the menu. A good example of the style-over substance nature of this restaurant is the serving of salt and pepper in Chinese soup spoons, which looks beautiful but is also prone to constant spillages. Whilst I enjoyed my meal here, I feel that the price and the erratic nature of service detracted from my experience enough to lead me to hold from advising booking a table here. I regret this, because my experience was very pleasant for the most part, but marred by minor errors.
