Well, there's not a lot of nice things to say about this place. Basically this is a private party…read morevenue with a cash bar and someone Dj'ing. Not a lot for staff to do, but serve drinks and er...not much else. It was loud, but it's what you'd expect from a party atmosphere, so this isn't a negative really. Good points...Looks nice from the outside, and looks nice on the inside too....that's about it for good points! Listing the bad points is a little bit longer of a list. Firstly there were no real staff outside the bar area and I had to ask a random person about toilets. Once in the toilets er, it was not pleasant. The ladies toilet had more than one stall without locks on the door and neither had screwed down toilet seats! The men's was better maintained, but smelt strongly of urine basically because of the slick of urine on the floor. I'll try to fill in the background a little of why were at the club. We'd just went to my younger brother's wedding and had a big meal at a Pissarro's in Hastings (yeah I'll be doing a review of them too.) then we went to Black Market VIP to have the reception and celebrate the marriage. It was a very long day for all concerned, where it rained constantly from when we left the church at 2.30pm until 9pm. Which leads me on to the next problem which is a more major one I believe. The bar and bar-staff; My sister offered to buy myself and my wife a drink from the bar, we both said "yes, that would be awesome!" So I chose a cider, and Elle wanted a cocktail, but wasn't sure which so went with my sister to the bar to choose. Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, if you work in a bar, a cocktail lounge, or a pub, you're supposed to know how to make a basic cocktail? Well they didn't. Elle went to the bar and asked for a cocktail, their response was to say "Sorry, we're not doing cocktails today, cause if we have to stand here and mix cocktails it'll cause too much of a fuss...."! Elle was getting a little emotional now after such a long day and the staff basically agreed that they would make a cocktail. Elle asked for a cosmopolitan, they said "Ok, what are the ingredients?" To this Elle was pretty shocked. So decided on something easier when she saw some absinthe sitting on the shelves behind them, and said "ok, you don't know how to make that, how about some absinthe instead?" To this she was told "We don't have any absinthe!" To this she pointed to a bottle of Pernod saying "That's absinthe over there!". So they poured her some neat! "This isn't how you serve absinthe, she told them!" The bar staff looked at each other saying "ok, how are you supposed to serve it?" Elle explained that it is served with water poured over a cube of sugar into a glass. To this the bar staff said "You want it with water?" Elle found this infuriating and very upsetting and told them to forget it! Went back over to where I was sitting and burst into tears. My sister followed and gave me my drink which was warm. Apparently they haven't heard of cold cider in Hastings. If you run a bar, you need to know how to serve the drinks that you're selling. The staff weren't trained for anything other than pulling pints or taking the lids off bottles. Avoid them if you want a have a good time or a cocktail!

Apparently this pub is more of a Londoner's pub, and we were Londoners down for a day trip - so…read morethis was the perfect lunchtime stop. The Crown is just the right size to feel cosy without being too crammed, a bit dark on the sunniest day of he year perhaps, but then it's only sensible to take shelter at midday. I always insist on having fish and chips when by the seaside and was almost disappointed to not find this basic pub grup offering here ... the menu is a lot more sophisticated and I had my cod served served on a bed of sweet potato. The fish is caught locally and was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a taste of the chips as a starter along with freshly baked bread (on the premises!) and pickled eggs (I was too squeamish to try those, but apparently they were delicious and definitely not of the turned-blue-on-the-counter type). And we didn's stop there, the pudding menu was just too tempting. I decided to stick to ice cream (bakewell tart flavour!) and soon had food envy as other's plum compote, tarts and cakes arrived - everything tasted just as wonderful as it sounded on the menu and looked on the plate. Lunch at the Crown Inn alone is reason enough not to leave it too long till the next trip.

Lovely food, good atmosphere and friendly staff. A no. 1 gastro pub for real! Tried soup of the…read moreday, a vegetarian main dish and a lamb main dish, all delish.
