    Wagamama - Pork ramen

My only fear is that people think this in any way represents Japanese food. It really doesn't…read more Wagamama is a chain restaurant started in London in the 90's, which makes it similar in its history and level of success to Yo! Sushi. I'm not a huge fan of the non-stop self-promotion of Yo's creator, but the sushi they make is passable enough. That's not the case with Wagamama. The noodles it serves up -- and for all the additions to its menu, it's still fundamentally a noodle restaurant -- are unlike anything you'd ever get in Japan. The texture, the taste, the bizarre choices they give you (chilli chicken ramen?)... completely alien to the experience you'd get were you to have the real thing. I'm not a foodie and certainly not a food snob, but if you're after an authentic bowl of ramen, look elsewhere. Since going to the London restaurant in the mid-90's, I've occasionally gone to their other restaurants -- including the one in Tunbridge Wells -- to see if they've changed anything around. The expanded menu, with stuff like katsu curry, is fine, and the service is always okay. But there's no getting over the fact that their noodles are pretty rank.

As good as any of the other Wagamamas, and as far as I am aware, the closest one to my house. Great…read morefood served quickly and very reasonably priced, what more could you want. My personal favourite is the Ginger Chicken Udon, but could quite happily eat anything off the menu.

The plus' being for me that it's over 21's on weekend nights and a perfect half way stop when travelling up or down the hill that is Mt Pleasant. I have, however, recently tried The Barn during a sunny weekend afternoon and for the first time sampled the delights of it's lunchtime food menu. I am, to say the least, impressed; the garden is a sun trap, and a definite addition to my Pub Garden Summer Faves. The food was also perfect for a lunchtime bite. I had a couple of items from their Tapas menu, but they also have a range of sandwiches and burgers, and the neighbouring table were digging into a large bowl of mussels, which looked delicious. The drinks aren't the cheapest you'll find in the area, so I was also pleasantly surprised by how cheap the food menu was. Most main lunch courses were around the £4-6 mark, which for the look of the size of those mussels seemed pretty damn reasonable. I was also served a Pimms with more than just a single strawberry in the way of fresh fruit, which is always worth an extra star in my books.

We were feeling a little peckish but not massively so, so Scott and I decided to get a few small plates to share. Hummus and Crispbreads with walnuts: it was okay, nowhere near enough Hummus and the Crispbreads weren't great. I wouldn't have this again. Chicken wings: can't go wrong with chicken wings, they were crisp and full of flavor. The ailoi was nice too. Yerba Smoked Beef: now this was a delight! Portion was quite small but it more than made up for it in flavour. I think this was my favourite out of the dishes. Empanadas. We had a ground beef and and chorizo and cheese Empanada and they were both divine. Decent size, the pastry was thick but light at the same time and didn't give us a heavy feeling afterwards. Highly recommended. I had a drink of the homemade lemonade, which at £2.95 I thought was outrageous. It was essentially a glass of water with a bit of lemon squeezed in, plus a stick thyme as a garnish. Tasteless and not worth it. Overall I'd give Cau 3.5 stars. It was good, but my experience at the one in Amsterdam was excellent.
