For years I've been solely going to The Barn on Friday or Saturday nights, when it's generally pretty heaving and you'd be very lucky to get a seat. The plus' being for me that it's over 21's on weekend nights and a perfect half way stop when travelling up or down the hill that is Mt Pleasant. I have, however, recently tried The Barn during a sunny weekend afternoon and for the first time sampled the delights of it's lunchtime food menu. I am, to say the least, impressed; the garden is a sun trap, and a definite addition to my Pub Garden Summer Faves. The food was also perfect for a lunchtime bite. I had a couple of items from their Tapas menu, but they also have a range of sandwiches and burgers, and the neighbouring table were digging into a large bowl of mussels, which looked delicious. The drinks aren't the cheapest you'll find in the area, so I was also pleasantly surprised by how cheap the food menu was. Most main lunch courses were around the £4-6 mark, which for the look of the size of those mussels seemed pretty damn reasonable. I was also served a Pimms with more than just a single strawberry in the way of fresh fruit, which is always worth an extra star in my books. read more

Husband's chip butty resembled something out of a 1970's frozen fish finger ad, my Nachos "a la Casa" was basically a bag of Doritos with solidified cheese like product congealed on top. Daughter's chips were slabs of stone cold mediocrity. Bad staff. Bad food. Don't go! Subsequent to the above review, the General Manager posted a reply which infers it was our fault for not choosing the correct dishes to order! This was not the case and clearly the fault in the restaurant lies with the management in the quality of food and the lack of good staff training. As an addendum, I come from England and was showing my new American Husband around my Home country. We travelled around London, Kent and Sussex for two weeks. The meal we had at the Barn was BY FAR the worst meal we endured. Mr Manager, I think, rather than blaming your clients for the bad service and food, you look within and question whether you really should be in a good and hospitality career. read more

The Barn is a fantastic restaurant that I have visited often. The garden area is beautifully kept and makes a wonderful setting in the summer for drinks and dinner. My particular favourite meals are the home made burgers, the steak, and of course - the chocolate brownie! read more

The pub is definitely spoiling it for the restaurant! I had a pint in the pub last night, the Guinness tasted pretty average, the place seemed sticky and dirty but worst of all was the service. The girl who served me was actually friendly enough, the main issue was what appeared to be the bar manager (just an assumption, he was dressed differently to the rest in a grey shirt) who was offensively loud behind the bar and used language not appropriate for someone in his position! I'd avoid the bar if you can, but can't vouch for the restaurant having not eaten there for a couple of years now. read more

I make no apologies for this - somebody needs to be told... The Barn is a centrally located pub in TW and benefits from the local businesses in the area so is usually busy at lunchtimes (when I've been as it's close to our offices). I can't comment on the evening trade however. On each occasion the food has been appalling - not just 'below average' pub grub but flat out disgusting. On my first visit the pizza I ordered ('Spicy pepper') was actually wet...don't ask me how they did this...and the (cheddar) cheese topping was hardly melted. Under this vulcanised crust of Cathedral City lay AT LEAST 2 raw bell peppers sliced into chunks. As a final flourish the kitchen had garnished the entire (tepid) topping with the entire contents of a jar of Jalapeno chilies. On collecting my barely touched plate the waiter kept a stony faced experssion of total dis-interest and whipped away the plate before i could open my mouth and mutter 'withold my compliments to the kitchen'. I have been back several times since on 'corporate' get together lunches - last week the seasonal menu was launched and now features the 'All Day Breakfast Pizza'. My homemade burger with stilton came with a side of carbonised chips (as did the other 3 we ordered) and a burger made from low-grade watery mince which oozed industrial grease as you picked it up - tasted of nothing - and was topped off with the crusty arse end of a stilton wedge which hadn't even melted. Oh - a colleague who went for he 'safe' option of a caesar salad was intrigued to see the kitchen had - in typical signature style - tipped the entire contents of a jar of capers on top of the salad rendering it inedible and soaked in bitter vinegar. It can't possibly get any worse...but I'm going back only to see what the Christmas menu promises! read more

I'm in a pub, waiting for my beautiful wife and just had the most disgusting meal. Simple fare: sausage inna bit of French bread, some fries and a side salad. Was served by a preening 18 year old, proudly displaying his chest-based tattoo (and very little in the way if intelligence). He was do busy posing, he allowed my Guinness to overflow. Slow reactions= pint with no head. No apology proffered. Food arrived. Bread was stale, the sausage was more like herby sawdust. Salad was limp. No that does not do limp justice. The salad was liquid. Liquid. I almost drank it. The fries were not. They should be called "baked". All so terribly disappointing, dispiriting and dissatisfying. And probably other words that start with "dis.....". "How was the food, sir?" "Er, the chips were cold and the sausage had no moisture in it". "did you enjoy it, sir?" "Er, not really" "Oh. Do you mind if I ask why?" "Um. I've just told you" "Oh. Are you finished?" "Yes. Yes I am" " ......so can I take it away then?" "By all means, yes". We had a lovely meal here in the restaurant on Saturday. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. We had a three course meal for £16.95 and for our main course had Torbay Sole and slow roasted Duck. We will be back! read more
