I tried a snickerdoodle whoopie pie with cream cheese icing inside. The cookies were perfect and the frosting was a bit on the super sweet side but that's how I like my frosting so it was delicious! My mom got a slice of pie- the flavor was pretty good but since it was kept in the fridge, the crust lost a bit of the crunch/flakiness. We bought a take and bake frozen raspberry pie for the next time we have guests over. Mom also got a brownie, which she said was very good as well. The wide selection of pre made salads and sandwiches looked great as well as the large selection of take and bake meals and side dishes. This is my favorite type of a local gem to discover. It's a perfect spot to stop on the way to or from Lake Placid. I actually visited twice in the same day! It's open Friday-Monday (as of when I visited in November'23). I think I'll actually head back to that area next weekend and stop back in to pick up a few gifts and some more baked goods! My sister clued us in on the place and as we walked by shortly before they were closing at 4 pm on a Saturday in August, there was a tent sign outside showing a variety of breads crossed off and two remaining. Sure enough, there were not only just two flavors left in the display case, there were only two loaves. We purchased the sourdough with cherries and pecans. As we were paying for our purchase another customer came in and bought that last loaf. When we got back to my sister's house we sliced the bread to try it. It was absolutely delicious! I also understand that scones and croissants are made on the premises by the owners. My sister actually reserved some for pickup the following day. (Unfortunately, we will have left for home by then.) I did also spy a case with a variety of cheeses - next time. It's my understanding that this is a husband and wife operation. The husband makes the breads and the wife makes the scones and croissants. The wife is also responsible for the operation of the home furnishing store (Pine Cone Mercantile) that you will walk through to get to the bakery. Go ahead, just try to not be tempted to buy something in that store also as you pass through. Their Facebook page says they are open 10 am - 5 pm Thursday - Monday. However, they were closing at 4 pm the Saturday that we stopped in. I suggest calling them before going.

In Vermont corn is practically a cult. Each variety has a name -- silver queen, montauk, providence, honey select -- with a distinctive taste and look, each savored by afficionados. Everyone has their own perfect way of cooking it, which all vary by several seconds but basically follow the recipe above. There are treatises on how to store it after picking: shade, sun, room temperature, refrigerated - unwrapped or wrapped in paper or plastic? OMG... Freshness is everything. Never buy corn that wasn't picked the day you buy it. There are dozens of studies and theories as to how much sugar (ie, flavor)is lost overnight, with the consensus being about 50%. Which is irrelevant since CORN IS ALWAYS EATEN THE DAY IT IS PICKED. NO EXCEPTIONS! Day-old corn is no longer considered corn because IT HAS NO TASTE. In central Vermont, in the Lake Dunmore region near Middlebury, even though everyone and their brother sells corn, there is only one grower who consistently has perfect corn every time: Wayne Kingsley on Route 53, just north of the junction with Route 73 in Forest Dale. What sets Wayne apart is that he loves the food he grows and sells. He farms like a craftsman, using just the right fertilizer, just the right plot, planting on just the right days to sequence the different varieties so that every 3 or 4 days another type comes in, so you are always getting to taste different ones. His Providence corn had so much flavor that it made my mouth hurt. He also grows tomatoes, cukes, squash, beets, beans, all the rest, and his chosen blueberry supplier is also the best. As are his peaches. I have learned about the orgasmic joy of the natural taste of perfectly grown food from Kingsley's Farm Stand. Long may it reign. Who needs friends when there's corn?

Arrived to find chicken in the yard and a little hound dog sleeping right next to the road. Instant thought was this is going to be either awesome or horrible. We were pleasantly surprised. Let ourselves in to the office per the signs posted, made our way into the barn were we met Cory, the owner then his wife. They talked to us for a good bit. Really friendly folks. Showed us the most amazing newborn bunnies, got to meet Burt the HUGE hog, and a lot of other animals. They also had completely natural beef and bacon made local for sale. Can't say enough good things about this place.
