Coach miles always makes laugh and enjoy my workout, coach Hunter is the best and I definitely push myself the hardest in her classes. The front desk staff are great too. Ryan and Bella are so cool and friendly and they always have something nice to say and are chatty. Charlie recently helped me out big time with some billing issues. Can't say better things about this gym. It's worth it and has been something I look forward to now during my hectic week.

4 months in, and this is the fittest I've been since high school PE. One day, my daughter told me…read moreshe had to run a mile in her PE class and I asked what her mile time was, and she said 8:08. Pretty good! Then I thought to myself, "wow, has it really been 19 years since I ran a mile?" Yes it was, so I then looked for workout classes around the area that fit into my schedule, and that's where Orangetheory Lafayette / Lamorinda came in! It was a breeze signing up for my first class (free!) and instructions were clear- come to class 30 mins early, fill out paperwork, get a walk through of the studio, and brief chat with the coach re the workout style and how to use the treadmill and rower. Took that first class and felt pretty good, so I took the plunge and signed up. Amazing variety of cardio and strength. Despite not doing consistent exercise over the past couple decades, I've already noticed a lot of improvements after doing Orangetheory workouts. My endurance has gotten a lot better since day 1, and I can carry a most grocery shopping bags within one trip! Most classes are a mix between the treadmill, rower, and floor (body weight and exercises with weights), and each consecutive day is different. I love choosing whether I want to run or power walk on the treads, go a bit heavier or lighter with the weights, etc., depending on how my body feels that day. The coaches will say what to do, and you do that at your speed. I really need that, cause otherwise, I wouldn't be getting anything done! Another selling point for me was the data. If you use their heart rate monitor, you get a report of where your heart rate was during the duration of class, how much distance you've accumulated, and so much more. All that data per workout on the app is intriguing. Thanks to everyone here, especially the amazing coaches and team for motivating me!

Elliot and Jon always find a way to get me hyped up and ready for my all outs! Sonia has also been a great addition to the studio, since she joined a little over a year ago. The front staff - Dior, Kam, and Marcos are always very helpful. The workouts have helped push me to improve my mile per min time and overall endurance. If you are considering OTF and want a fantastic workout surrounded by nothing but positive energy this is the place to be.

I've been a member at Orangetheory Montclair for about 5 months and usually enjoy the workouts and…read morecoaches, but my experience on October 24th at the 8:30 AM class left me really disappointed. Before class started, I told the front desk that my heart rate monitor wasn't showing up on the screen. They told me they'd handle it and to go ahead and start class without it. Twenty minutes passed without a working band until I waved over the coach, Elliot, who kindly stepped in to help. It's very likely I would have gone the entire class without a monitor if he hadn't intervened--twice. First, I was given my own band back and told it would work, but it didn't. Then Elliot had to tell the manager to give me a loaner band and comp it. By that time, half the workout was over. Since the heart rate data is such a core part of what you pay for at Orangetheory, this really undercut the experience. After class, the manager suggested the problem was with my band, but it synced perfectly to my phone both before and after class. When I asked for a replacement class (since I'm on the 4-classes-per-month plan), she was resistant and said she'd get back to me. I never heard back from her or from corporate customer service, despite reaching out through the official website. What's been most disappointing since then is that the manager hasn't acknowledged me at all when I've come in--no hello, no follow-up, no recognition of the issue. That lack of accountability and basic customer service doesn't reflect well on the studio or the brand. I want to emphasize that the classes themselves are excellent and the coaches are consistently fantastic, which is why I'm continuing to go. They make the workouts worth it. But I hope the studio's customer service and follow-through can start matching the quality of the coaching team.

Ok buckle in and get comfy because this is gonna be a long review. I have always been a notoriously…read morelazy person that will not move unless I absolutely have to. But every few years, I'll start feeling bad about myself, sign up for a gym, and pay for it every month and go once or twice a year. So when my friend asked me if I wanted to do a trial class at OrangeTheory and I loved it and signed up, my husband was very skeptical. That was over two years ago. I'm still consistently going, minus one month where I had some health issues. Let me spill all the deets. There are three plans you can sign up for - 4 classes a month, 8 classes a month or unlimited. Let's get the cons out of the way first. If you sign up for a class and don't cancel more than 8 hours in advance, you either lose the class (if you have the 4/8 class plan) or you have to pay $14 (I think) for the unlimited plan. Honestly, this works in my favor because it's very motivating to go. They also have their own heart rate monitor that connects with their system - you can't use your own monitor. Their monitor is over $100. You don't HAVE to have it, but for me personally, this monitor gamifies the whole workout so I feel like it's a necessity. Now for the actual structure of the workout. You have different zones depending on your heart rate. The zones go from blue to green to orange to red as your heart rate increases. The orange zone is where ORANGETheory gets their name. You can ask them more about the science, I don't want to fake news you. There is a coach and then there's you and other people like you that are not the coach. There are treads, rowers, and the floor. The floor is strength - weights, resistance bands, other things. Usually, you start either on the tread or the floor and then alternate to the other halfway through the class. When you start on the floor, you warm up on the rower. On the tread, there are three categories of you - you are a power walker, jogger or runner. Then there are different levels - base pace, push and all out. Depending on this 3x3 matrix, there are windows of your pace + incline. For example, a power walker's base pace is 3.5 - 4.5 speed and 1-3% incline and their all out is the same pace with a 10% incline. A jogger's base pace would be 4.5 - 5.5 with no incline (don't quote me on these ranges). A push basically pushes you (there are ranges) and all-outs are supposed to kill you. The coach will tell you how long you need to stay in each - for example: 1 minute base, 2 minutes of push and 30 seconds of all out. And will tell you when to switch between each. These ranges are suggestions, the coaches will never call you out if you decide to take it easy some days and go lower than the range. On the floor, you choose the weights or resistance, and there is a screen showing you what workout to do and the range of reps you need to do. The coach will demonstrate the forms and walk around and fix your form if necessary. Sometimes you will go on the rower in between floor exercises. Then there are events and challenges that gamify the whole workout. There is an event called Hell Week for example around Halloween. They are more intense workouts and if you get 4 workouts in an 8 day period, you will get a shirt. These are usually $15 extra, but I always like to sign up for these. There's a workout called Capture the Flag where you and a partner are on the rower and trying to reach certain goals to capture different flags and this one always makes me feel like I"m going to die, but in a good way. There are many many others, and for the single day events, you usually get a metric so you can compare this metric to the next time the same event rolls around to see how much you've improved (or not, which is cool too) I realize it's not for everyone, but for me personally, I (and everyone else who's known me for a long time) can't believe how consistently I work out now. My husband was astounded, and to this day, my friend who dragged me to the trial class is incredibly proud of herself (which she absolutely should be). I at least recommend a trial class (hit me up so I can take you and refer you!). Even if you don't like it, it'll be such a great workout. Also, it's easy to burn 500+ calories in an hour.

They followed up with a discounted class, and my friend pushed me to join with her again, so boom. The 60 minute workout was half tread and half rowing/strength. The tread pushes me because I don't normally run. I do wish there was more of a focus on the strength portion, although do know have solely strength classes, but not many. I ended up buying a 5 class pack, which honestly I don't know if I would have done without having a workout buddy that's into it. But since I do, it's a great workout. The staff has been so friendly and accomodating. They have a shower, a few bathrooms and a few lockers. Overall, I have enjoyed OTF to push me to do longer, more intense running workouts. I look forward to trying the strength classes.

Due to me being completely new, I decided to get a wearable with my membership. It was originally $199 but I asked if I can get a student discount which brought it down to $189. The wearable was a pretty steep price and the person who checked me out did not tell me about the May promo they had going on (iirc half off a wearable) so I decided to get the wearable, towel, bag, and OTF water bottle pack which was around $129, which I would not have done without the wearable. I saw the May promo on the back of the bathroom door after class. There were times that I needed help same day so I texted the front staff hours before the class and they disregarded my question, which was disappointing for my first good impressions of the staff. Looking out from a monetary perspective (not informing a new joiner about promos) vs actually caring about a member (informing new joiner about promos and texting answers back to questions) would have made me return to OTF in the future, but as the saying goes, you can only skin a sheep once. I would join with the South Bay OTF studios as they seem less opportunistic, but again, the coaches here were amazing!
