Happened to be in Jersey City for a friend's wedding, and my hotel was a walking distance from here so I was super excited to try it out. IMO the popcorn chicken and beef noodle soup were both fairly standard, I also got the chicken luroufan but forgot to take a picture. Their luroufan is great, with a slightly better meat-to-rice ratio than a lot of other places (still a little too much rice, but impressive for the price). The mala fries really stood out here. I ordered them since they sounded interesting, but didn't have high expectations as I feel like adding "mala" to everything has gotten really popular recently and a lot of dishes don't actually capture the Sichuanese mala spirit well. Gulp really exceeded my expectations here! I typically don't eat fries but I gobbled up this entire plate and barely left any for my fiancé LOL. Definitely recommend stopping by at the very least to try the mala fries! Otherwise it's standard Taiwanese bento fare. Service was fairly fast and friendly as well!

Overall: B // 4 stars Reasonably good cheat day food options featuring all your favorite guilty pleasures from fried pork cutlets to popcorn chicken. Its best to order Uber Eats pickup as they frequently run promotions there, as opposed to ordering direct in person. (Daikon Cake: D) - Love the mildly spiced xo sauce, but the portion is unnecessarily small for thebprice. (Fruit Tea: B) - Nothing outstanding, but refreshing tropical flavors that help reduce the heaviness coming from the rest of the dishes. (Sweet Potato Fries: C) - Brilliant flavor pairing of plum salt to enhance the sweet potatoes, but the fries are not crispy. (Beef Noodle Soup: B) - Comfort food with tenderly braised beef and a fulfilling soup. Noodles are kept separate from the broth to avoid soaking it all up, but also makes it difficult to reconstruct mess-free. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: E Overall: 4 stars Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

For takeout, I thought the food retained it's flavor and the fries retained it's crispiness! If you like lu rou fan ( pork belly over rice) then you will probably really love Gulp. Prices are not too bad and the it's a good sized portion! My favorite though was the stewed beef over noodles - that was fire. Definitely try to get that if you can! I also loved how they transport - with separate containers so the noodles don't get soggy!

Made my second visit to Gulp--this time at their Jersey City location! I was once again blown away by how authentic their Taiwanese food is. It tasted just like the street food I remember from my trips to Taiwan. The nostalgia hit hard. They offer daily deals, such as BOGO lu rou noodle/BOGO 50% off lu rou fan, free combo upgrade for beef noodle soup, free sweet potato fries (love it), and more!   Conveniently located near Grove St, this location is more spacious and has an expanded menu. I can totally see myself coming here all the time once I move to JC. I still love their LIC location, which is right next to 929 Bar! *Lu Rou Fan Bento 滷肉飯便當 $14 *** My boyfriend and I almost fought over the lu rou fan--we both loved it way too much. It was loaded with braised minced pork, so every bite came with plenty of meat. I also loved the addition of braised veggies and vermicelli, which added extra layers of flavor. But the real game-changer was the spicy pickled mustard greens. They were dangerously addictive. And they're FREE, so you can pile on as much as you want (sorry but I basically inhaled the whole jar). *Fried Chicken Cutlet 香雞排 $8 *** We were told to try their fried chicken, and so glad we did. We were so impressed that we're already planning to come back for the chicken cutlet bento. Crispy, juicy, and equivalent to the size of my face. Perfectly seasoned with the signature five-spice kick and basils.  *Beef Noodle Soup 牛肉麵 $19 Easily one of the taiwanese spots in NYC/JC for authentic beef noodle soup. The bowl came with four thick slices of tender, braised beef shank. I only wished they could add radish, carrots, and tomatoes to the broth for a sweet veggie flavor. *Radish Cake 脆皮蘿蔔糕 $8 * *Taiwanese Sausage 台灣香腸 $4 * *Fried Platter 炸物拼盤 $14 We grabbed a couple of appetizers to share, and they instantly brought me back to the night markets in Taiwan. My favorite was the chewy radish cake with xo-sauce. *Sea Salt Cream Black Tea 海鹽奶蓋古早味紅茶 $4.5 * *Fruit Green Tea 特調水果茶 $4.5 Their drinks are so cheap compared to many boba spots!? You can add $1 for boba/lychee jelly, or $1.5 for passionfruit popping jelly/sea salt cream. Highly recommend their sea salt cream black tea, their #1 bestselling drink.

Taiwanese spots are a rarity in even the best of times, so I won't be a choosy beggar. Yes, this location of Gulp is in a part of JC where dreams undoubtedly go to die, but what can you do? The Beef Noodle Soup is by far their best offering--and if you dine in-person, you get a free noodle refill. Hoozah! The other staple TW product--Popcorn Chicken--wasn't bad though it lacked the complex seasoning and basil that a truly good version would have. We also enjoyed the bizarre Mala Fries: think disco fries that spent too much time in Southern China. And our side of Braised Dried Tofu was decent. On the other hand, their Chicken and Lu Rou Rice has consistently been under-seasoned. It's made well--the texture of the braised meat is on point--but it lacks salt, like someone at the last step forgot to add it. Sigh. If you decide to upgrade to a combo deal, I highly recommend the Sea Salt Cream Black Tea. Mmm....sea cream....

First time visiting Jersey City and had a lovely experience at Gulp! I forgot to snap a photo of the complementary appetizer but they served some cherry tomatoes that were so yummy we asked for seconds. The popcorn chicken and noodles were both amazing. I'd definitely revisit if I'm in the area in the future!

Great Taiwanese lunch spot with fast service. We made our beef noodle soup and pork over rice dishes combos by adding popcorn chicken and sausage along with beverages. Bottom line, there is tasty food, quick service and reasonable prices.

the small container of chili oil that costs 50 cents to bring home

I heard many good things about Gulp, the original location in LIC, so I was very excited when I heard that this restaurant was opening it's second location in Jersey City. I stopped by with my boyfriend around 8:15pm to get takeout to bring home. There was a group of people also waiting for their take out orders (about another 6 groups) at that time, and a full house sitting inside. I didn't get to sit inside, but I went inside to order at the counter and the decor and interior was very cute. If there was not a long wait, I would have sat inside. We ordered one lurou fan platter and one lurou + chicken platter. We also ordered mala fries and an order of the popcorn chicken. I think we were accidentally given the lurou+chicken and chicken platter, unfortunately. Regarding the food, the lurou fan was disappointing because there was very little meat, only a thin layer on top of a box full of rice. Same with the chicken. I unfortunately felt like this was not worth the money. The popcorn chicken was decent, and so were the fries. The only thing that really spoke to me was the chili oil -- their chili oil was really good. However, you can only eat however much you want if you dine in. If you want to ask for chili oil takeout, it's 0.50 cents per container. In addition, the container we got was barely 1/4th full which was disappointing. I would definitely take a jar of that home though, if they sold it! We had to wait over 25 minutes for our food; we did understand that they were a full house at the time, but as the menu is small and very simple, I don't think I would be very happy to wait this long if I were to visit again. Overall, I believe the price is not justified for the food given. There was also nothing amazing about the meal. However, I do think the interior is very cute and it would be a great place to bring someone for a date if you wanted the retro Taiwan diner vibes. I also really enjoyed the tiny container of chili oil I got in my takeout (that was comped after waiting over 30 mins). However, I don't think I would return anytime soon.

Once we realized that a new place took over the existing space, we were excited to try it out. As part of their soft opening, we ordered the popcorn chicken, some of the bentos and the gulp combo (one of the bentos plus a drink and mini popcorn chicken). Since we tried the food early on, it's been interesting to see how Gulp has been making changes and adding things to the menu as they go. We've now gone several times and have ordered it to go. The main food in the bentos are the rice and protein. The sides are on the smaller side (little bit of veg, noodles and half a tea egg). The glass noodles are actually quite tasty and have an umami flavor (like they were soaked in broth). The popcorn chicken has light breading and is good if you eat it right away. I'd skip the mini radish cakes (they weren't quite what I expected and had a spongy texture) though. I've also tried the zha jiang noodles which I liked but the initial portion was too small to be a meal. They've actually changed this though and it's much more reasonably sized now! Sometimes the lu rou fan is a bit on the salty side but it's still very flavorful so you can just add more rice. We've also tried their beef noodle soup and the chunks of beef are quite thick! This wasn't the best beef noodle soup we ever had but it worked when in the mood for a hot noodle soup. They now also have a braised section where you can get beef and other braised items on the side. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem consistent. One time the beef was tender and the second time it was so incredibly chewy that we couldn't swallow it. We also tried their assorted fried platter and it was alright. We still like their popcorn chicken the best and would probably prefer to just get that on its own. Of the bentos there's also another chicken option, this is slightly less flavorful and is white meat (it looks like they've changed this to thigh meat now and added a sauce on the side since then). In summary, my top picks are the popcorn chicken, lu rou bento and zha jiang noodles. It's good to know that several of my critiques have already been adjusted (not because of me) in such a short time since it seems like the staff is attentive and willing to make changes. I'm sure others have felt similarly so it's good that they'll likely continue to improve over time! We were a fan of their promo which got a lot of buzz, (free tea with purchase) but I haven't tried their boba since it's been added to the menu so I'm looking forward to that as well! We'll definitely continue to order from here!

    Radish Cake with XO sauce

Love the decor of this place very small and reminiscent of old style Asian restaurant. Food was good and the service excellent. For the table we ordered the Taiwanese Popcorn chicken which was crunchy and meaty. The radish cakes were very crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. The Golden bun was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside but I wish they added a condensed milk dip instead of drizzle. The Braised Combo was very good and a lot of flavor the meat in particular was very tender. We all had the beef noodle soup which was great. I love the noodle as it was very good and has a nice bite to it. The beef was so tender it was falling apart when you picked up. Broth was very flavorful and has a hint of spiciness to it.

    Radish with XO sauce

Quite disappointed, upon reading reviews from others about this place. Review on Food: Popcorn chicken bento was quite small, rice was luke warm-cold, the popcorn chicken was pre-made and heated back warm. It didn't taste fresh. The tea egg and vermicelli was relatively bland. Radish cake came in 8 small pieces ( 1/2" wide pieces each) , came with literally a pea sized XO sauce to dip. It wasn't even enough to dip two pieces of radish cake. The advertised photo shown a quarter size of the XO sauce placed on top of the radish . Drink: the fruit green tea was exceptionally sweet with no option of selecting levels of sweetness. Milk green tea was the only item that was decent . I would not recommend.

I was a frequent customer of A-Yo Tea so I was a little sad when they closed but I was so happy to hear a Taiwanese spot was going to take its place. I'm a huge fan of Taiwanese popcorn chicken so I was really looking forward to being so close to a shop that had it. I was nervous it wouldn't be good but I was pleasantly surprised. It's crunchy and well flavored. The chicken is juicy. The spicy version isn't overwhelming and was truly one of the best I've had. I also really enjoyed the Beef Noodle Soup. The soup is full of umami and not too salty. The noodles are bouncy and not overcooked. It was nice that they offer one noodle refill since I shared the bowl and definitely wanted more noodles. The ambiance is very reminiscent of cafes in Taiwan and I'll definitely be coming here more often!

Very Fresh Noodles specializes in biangbiang (hand pulled) noodles. We got the Tingly & Spicy Cumin Lamb (Dry). It featured their signature biangbiang noodles seasoned with cumin, peppercorn, and their housemade chili oil. It's served with celery, cabbage, and tonsss of cilantro. SO GOOD! It was slurped up in minutes. The spice is mala spice, so it's a little numbing, tingly, and hurts just a bit in the best way. It definitely grows, so have a beverage on hand. The chewy noodles, spicy seasonings, and tender lamb made this dish unforgettable. Pro-tip: You can get it either dry (tossed in the sauce) or soupy!

I ordered the beef dry noodles. Their signature noodles are nice, thick, and chewy. They cooled off fairly quickly, but the center was still warm. Oily as expected but not overly so. It was definitely on the salty side. Just a little spicy but even a wimp like me was okay with it. Flavor wise, it was solid and good but nothing super unique or that I'd go out of the way for (for the dry noodles). Happy I tried it and it was tasty, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return or highly recommend friends to try them out. It's pretty pricey for a plate or bowl, but it was a big portion (and I eat a lot!). There's tons of protein, like there was almost an endless hill of beef for me. Not really much service besides taking the order and they seemed busy through lunch and the early afternoon. There's limited bar seating at the storefront or tables near the windows, but you can take your plate and walk to the basement floor for quieter seating too!

I paid extra for more meat, which was a solid choice. it did not, however, make up for the lack of flavor. chew of the noodles was great, though. the only decent item my friend and I had here was the popcorn chicken. super fresh, steaming hot, crispy, and loads of flavor. I would come back here again just for that. ambiance is nice -- solid lighting and fun art around. tables are inches apart so you will definitely hear and be sat right next to others. workers were slightly rude, the restaurant seems to be run by girls in their early 20s/teens. I'm sure the food is more authentic and service is more quality elsewhere.

It wasn't bad but I'm still trying to process whether I like it or not. Service (4/5): Not the friendliest but they get your order done. While we were discussing our order they didn't seem to greet us or help answer questions unless we specifically asked. Ambiance (4/5): Nice well lit store with plenty of seating and tables.

I was sad to see the Manhattan location close down but was thankful there is one in Jersey City!…read more This has become a semi regular spot of mine when I'm in the mood for a dessert.  I often go with a friend and we'll have dessert dates here.  Our favorites include the tofu pudding series or the grass jelly signature series.  During the summer my current favorite is the Icy Grass Jelly Signature C but I've had the hot version on a cooler day.  The hot grass jelly doesn't have as much structure so the cold version is definitely better. The portion size is solid and it really hits the spot!  You have the option to build your own if you don't like the preset options which is great.  When taro is included in the dessert, while good, it's a huge chunk so after I tried it, I usually opt out now since it's not super digestible and is a bit dry (I appreciate the generosity/amount though). This is a fast casual spot so interactions with staff are usually minimal and you can place orders on one of their two kiosks (or directly with a person at the front).  Other items of note, the loyalty program wasn't super straightforward to sign up for and you couldn't do it right away from the kiosk.  It requires you to download the app and sign up before you could get any benefits so that was slightly frustrating since you'd miss out if you didn't have time to do that immediately. I usually go to Meet Fresh for their desserts though I have also tried their drinks.  Some of their specialty drinks are nice (I tried a grass jelly slushie that was seasonal at the time and I enjoyed that a lot) but their other regular bubble tea drinks aren't particularly standout (though they are expensive). Seating is also more limited now than it used to be since the space is shared with another store that sells Chinese smoked meats and cold appetizers.  I'm still a huge fan of theirs and will continue to frequent their location.  They make desserts well so give them a try if you're in the area!
