Happened to be in Jersey City for a friend's wedding, and my hotel was a walking distance from here so I was super excited to try it out. IMO the popcorn chicken and beef noodle soup were both fairly standard, I also got the chicken luroufan but forgot to take a picture. Their luroufan is great, with a slightly better meat-to-rice ratio than a lot of other places (still a little too much rice, but impressive for the price). The mala fries really stood out here. I ordered them since they sounded interesting, but didn't have high expectations as I feel like adding "mala" to everything has gotten really popular recently and a lot of dishes don't actually capture the Sichuanese mala spirit well. Gulp really exceeded my expectations here! I typically don't eat fries but I gobbled up this entire plate and barely left any for my fiancé LOL. It tasted just like the street food I remember from my trips to Taiwan. The nostalgia hit hard. I had no idea that the boba shop in the same space had closed and had turned into a Taiwanese restaurant. My friend suggested lunch here when I had asked him if there was anything he wanted to try in JC. We came in, a party of 4, around 1pm on a Sunday. They pushed together two tables for us, which was very nice. You order via their QR code on the table. You can either order together or separately. I had the Taiwanese chicken over rice, but for some reason i thought would've been a cutlet but was actually popcorn chicken. The chicken was very dry. My husband and friend both had the pork luroufan, which was much better. The pork was very juicy and tender. Also, if you get the pork dry noodle, it's basically just the same pork over noodles. Taiwanese spots are a rarity in even the best of times, so I won't be a choosy beggar. Yes, this location of Gulp is in a part of JC where dreams undoubtedly go to die, but what can you do? The Beef Noodle Soup is by far their best offering--and if you dine in-person, you get a free noodle refill. Hoozah! The other staple TW product--Popcorn Chicken--wasn't bad though it lacked the complex seasoning and basil that a truly good version would have. We also enjoyed the bizarre Mala Fries: think disco fries that spent too much time in Southern China. And our side of Braised Dried Tofu was decent. On the other hand, their Chicken and Lu Rou Rice has consistently been under-seasoned. It's made well--the texture of the braised meat is on point--but it lacks salt, like someone at the last step forgot to add it. Sigh. I heard many good things about Gulp, the original location in LIC, so I was very excited when I heard that this restaurant was opening it's second location in Jersey City. I stopped by with my boyfriend around 8:15pm to get takeout to bring home. There was a group of people also waiting for their take out orders (about another 6 groups) at that time, and a full house sitting inside. I didn't get to sit inside, but I went inside to order at the counter and the decor and interior was very cute. If there was not a long wait, I would have sat inside. We ordered one lurou fan platter and one lurou + chicken platter. We also ordered mala fries and an order of the popcorn chicken. I think we were accidentally given the lurou+chicken and chicken platter, unfortunately. Regarding the food, the lurou fan was disappointing because there was very little meat, only a thin layer on top of a box full of rice. Same with the chicken. I unfortunately felt like this was not worth the money. The popcorn chicken was decent, and so were the fries. The only thing that really spoke to me was the chili oil -- their chili oil was really good. However, you can only eat however much you want if you dine in. If you want to ask for chili oil takeout, it's 0.50 cents per container. In addition, the container we got was barely 1/4th full which was disappointing. I would definitely take a jar of that home though, if they sold it! We had to wait over 25 minutes for our food; we did understand that they were a full house at the time, but as the menu is small and very simple, I don't think I would be very happy to wait this long if I were to visit again. Overall, I believe the price is not justified for the food given. There was also nothing amazing about the meal. However, I do think the interior is very cute and it would be a great place to bring someone for a date if you wanted the retro Taiwan diner vibes. I also really enjoyed the tiny container of chili oil I got in my takeout (that was comped after waiting over 30 mins). However, I don't think I would return anytime soon. read more

Once we realized that a new place took over the existing space, we were excited to try it out. As part of their soft opening, we ordered the popcorn chicken, some of the bentos and the gulp combo (one of the bentos plus a drink and mini popcorn chicken). Since we tried the food early on, it's been interesting to see how Gulp has been making changes and adding things to the menu as they go. We've now gone several times and have ordered it to go. The main food in the bentos are the rice and protein. The sides are on the smaller side (little bit of veg, noodles and half a tea egg). The glass noodles are actually quite tasty and have an umami flavor (like they were soaked in broth). The popcorn chicken has light breading and is good if you eat it right away. I'd skip the mini radish cakes (they weren't quite what I expected and had a spongy texture) though. I've also tried the zha jiang noodles which I liked but the initial portion was too small to be a meal. They've actually changed this though and it's much more reasonably sized now! Sometimes the lu rou fan is a bit on the salty side but it's still very flavorful so you can just add more rice. We've also tried their beef noodle soup and the chunks of beef are quite thick! This wasn't the best beef noodle soup we ever had but it worked when in the mood for a hot noodle soup. They now also have a braised section where you can get beef and other braised items on the side. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem consistent. One time the beef was tender and the second time it was so incredibly chewy that we couldn't swallow it. We also tried their assorted fried platter and it was alright. We still like their popcorn chicken the best and would probably prefer to just get that on its own. Of the bentos there's also another chicken option, this is slightly less flavorful and is white meat (it looks like they've changed this to thigh meat now and added a sauce on the side since then). In summary, my top picks are the popcorn chicken, lu rou bento and zha jiang noodles. It's good to know that several of my critiques have already been adjusted (not because of me) in such a short time since it seems like the staff is attentive and willing to make changes. I'm sure others have felt similarly so it's good that they'll likely continue to improve over time! We were a fan of their promo which got a lot of buzz, (free tea with purchase) but I haven't tried their boba since it's been added to the menu so I'm looking forward to that as well! Love the decor of this place very small and reminiscent of old style Asian restaurant. Food was good and the service excellent. For the table we ordered the Taiwanese Popcorn chicken which was crunchy and meaty. The radish cakes were very crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. The Golden bun was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside but I wish they added a condensed milk dip instead of drizzle. The Braised Combo was very good and a lot of flavor the meat in particular was very tender. We all had the beef noodle soup which was great. Lu Rou Fan - sweet and savory braised pork served with vermicelli noodles, cabbage over a bed of rice. My favorite of all the dishes we tried. Make sure to add the sour pickled veggies and spicy sauce (the condiments are free to take and are placed in a small containers in each table) for another layer of delicousness. Braised beef noodle soup - Tender beef shank and noodles with a nice bite. It was a good dish, but I felt the broth tasted a little thin. Plum seasoned sweet potato fries - Freshly made, crunchy, fried sweet potatoes seasoned with sugary topping. It's more on the sweet end and I enjoyed it. They have special promotions specific to each day so make sure to utilize it to save some money! We came on a Saturday and the special promo that day was spend $45 and get sweet potato fries for free. We came in for lunch on an unusually warm spring day and the restaurant was packed. I was so excited to have a Taiwanese café in the neighborhood, but this was rather disappointing. Ordering is confusing. You're supposed to create your own bill by signing into an account and ordering from your phone. But also servers can add things onto your bill. This can lead to extra and wrong charges, which definitely happened on my first visit. The chicken cutlet doesn't compare to Hot Star in Taiwan at all. It was tiny and soggy. I think they gave me the wrong kind of chicken cutlet? They initially tried to charge me for the bento version. Regardless, it was super sad. The bubble tea is very small for the price. Overall, the whole meal felt like poor value for money. There's a lot of potential and promise, so I still gave 3 stars. But in Taiwan, I would never leave a food establishment feeling so empty and unsatisfied. Try harder please, Gulp! read more

Review on Food: Popcorn chicken bento was quite small, rice was luke warm-cold, the popcorn chicken was pre-made and heated back warm. It didn't taste fresh. The tea egg and vermicelli was relatively bland. Radish cake came in 8 small pieces ( 1/2" wide pieces each) , came with literally a pea sized XO sauce to dip. It wasn't even enough to dip two pieces of radish cake. The advertised photo shown a quarter size of the XO sauce placed on top of the radish . Drink: the fruit green tea was exceptionally sweet with no option of selecting levels of sweetness. Milk green tea was the only item that was decent . I would not recommend. read more

I was a frequent customer of A-Yo Tea so I was a little sad when they closed but I was so happy to hear a Taiwanese spot was going to take its place. I'm a huge fan of Taiwanese popcorn chicken so I was really looking forward to being so close to a shop that had it. I was nervous it wouldn't be good but I was pleasantly surprised. It's crunchy and well flavored. The chicken is juicy.The spicy version isn't overwhelming and was truly one of the best I've had. I also really enjoyed the Beef Noodle Soup. I first read about this place opening in LIC and been wanting to go there ever since. Imagine my surprise when I found out that they opened on in Jersey City. On the day we went, if you get the cuttlefish and shrimp pancake bento, a drink is free. So, that's what I got. This was surprisingly good. We liked the fact that it was crispy. The sauce was nice and spicy and it came along with vermicelli, lettuce and egg on top of rice. Hubs said that he'd prefer if the egg was runny, but this was still good anyway. I liked it a lot. For the drink, I ordered fruit green tea and liked. The tea was pretty sweet and good. Hubs ordered the Lu Rou Fan Bento, which is braised pork rice). He said felt like he had this when he was younger. but he remembers the pork being in bite sized pieces and not somewhat minced. He preferred my pancake bento over his, but he still liked his. Vermicelli, lettuce and egg were a nice side but he could've done it without the pickled radish. We also got Mala fries and thought this was a bit disappointing. We got it based on a reviewer's recommendations. I thought it would be mala powder strewn all over the fries. What we got was a small dollop of mala sauce on the side of the fries. My partner and I were so excited to find a Taiwanese spot just around the corner from us. We waited for the food while playing the pinball and checked out their sauces on the table. When we got our food we asked if they added the sauces on the table to go, they said no and that if we wanted them we'd have to pay extra. So we decided to just open the bag and put it on our dishes instead of a take out container which seemed silly to charge. They proceeded to tell us we couldn't add it into our food and we could only use the sauce on the table if we're dining in. What the actual hell? That's ridiculous! It's not like they charged more for the food if we dined in using the sauces. So freakin cheap. Fine. Experience and service sucks. Still wanted to have an open mind on the food since I love taiwanese food. It has one of the best popcorn chickens in JC, ONLY if you buy at the restaurant, but it's so bad if you order delivery (ie the oil tasted stale, chickens were way over starched, and I had food poisoning after eating their delivery - like constant throw up because of their popcorn chicken take out). I was enticed by their half off Uber Eats deal, but I just realized there was a reason for that (duh, they likely gave you less fresh/stale food cuz it was cheaper than if you eat at the store, they have to justify their margin). Cute Taiwanese establishment in Jersey City. I've been meaning to try this for some time. I got here 30 min before closing and we're told they were only doing takeout at that point. I got the combo which you can pick an entree, appetizer and drink. Got the lu rou fan and some sort of pork with dry noodles. For appetizers I got the turnip cake and popcorn chicken. The cashier told us about the daily specials so I took advantage of that. Maybe because I was the last party there, my food came out pretty fast. Everything smelled wonderful. There were just a few things that were misses, one was that the sweet potato fries were really soggy. I know they get soggy if you do take out, but this was another level of soggy that goes beyond doing take out. I got bubbles in my drinks but ended up with none. Other than that, I absolutely loved the drinks. I got the green milk tea, which strongly tastes of tea and wasn't sweet. I couldn't adjust ice or sugar levels though. Also so cute how they put the menu on a pinball toy The service was really fast. Ordered the beef noodle soup and they give a generous portion of the beef and oh man, it's so tender! They also make their own pickled mustard greens and chili which both go so well with the noodle soup! I always think a Taiwanese beef noodle soup can't be complete with the mustard greens. The food was fine nothing special. however the portions were terrible. not sure if this was because it was take out but both meat rice dishes I ordered were 70% rice. I paid 15 dollars each for some rice essentially. Skimped on the meat and sides. I complained via Grubhub and they said the restaurant refused to give even a partial refund or do anything. I'd give it a 3.5/5 if I could, but rounded up bc despite some of my gripes with it, I still go back. In general, it's consistent but sometimes bland Taiwanese street food at Jersey City prices. Beef noodle soup - first thing I tried there. The beef was thick, tender and just outstanding, but the rest of the dish was extremely bland. The broth tasted like watered down chicken stock and soy sauce. If it wasn't that, it was hard to tell. The noodles and veggies were also super mid and forgettable. The price is the real killer. For $21, it's not worth it for just a few tasty pieces of beef. Prob never getting this again. Popcorn chicken - well-fried and seasoned, but the chicken itself was again strangely tasteless. The spicy version just has a bit of extra cumin in the seasoning (at least that's what it tasted like). Bubble tea - suuuuper watered down and yup, you guessed it, very bland lol. Lou rou fan - this is what I get every time now. Never had it before, so nothing to compare to, but it's a hearty bowl of comfort food. The quality is always consistent, the meat is tasty, it comes w some lettuce stems, half a (quite bland but I'll forgive this) tea egg, rice, some glass noodles, and just the right amount of sauce. Plum flavored sweet potato fries - I love this too! It's just really expensive at $8 (typical Jersey City price but still crazy to me) and not included in the combo meal, so I prob won't be getting it too frequently. Food is great, very generous portion. They got me at "free noodle refill" for my beef noodle soup. Staff are so friendly. We were given a welcome drink which was chicken broth simmered for 14 hours. We were given an authentic Taiwanese experience! The tables, musics, overall ambience. Such an amazing first time experience! read more
