Well that was easy. First off, understand that it's not painful or scary. If you're eligible to donate - you SHOULD donate. You never know if you or one of your loved ones will be on the receiving end of the donation. If needles or blood make you nervous, just look away; you'll feel a small pinch. Laser hair removal, waxing and mosquito bites are far worse, I tell ya. This is the main facility for the GCRBC, but they have donor centers all over Houston, as well as mobile donor stations located here: http://www.giveblood.org/where-to-donate/find-a-location/ So how to get started? 1. Read their FAQs. http://www.giveblood.org/faq.aspx 2. Schedule your appointment online (you can also do a walk-in but there could be a wait): https://www.commitforlife.org/donor/schedules/center_view/1/1411776000/#tabs-1 3. Fill out their basic health questionnaire THE DAY you plan on donating; bring a printed copy of your answers. 4. Expect to be there 1.5-2 hours from start (check-in, paper work) to finish (15-minute waiting period to enjoy snacks and relax). Shamefully, the last time I donated blood was at a mobile drive in 2011, so this time I opted to do the "Automated" donation versus the whole blood donation. It takes longer (80 minutes) but it's the system that better suits their blood needs. Free parking. Free wi-fi. Individual TVs and Dish network at each donor chair. Blankets, snacks, Calcium chews and other items to keep you comfy are all provided. If all that bit of info and saving lives doesn't convince ya, how's this? :: Health benefits of donating blood http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/5-health-benefits-donating-blood.html :: You can burn up to 650 calories from a one-time donation!!!

So everyone that knows me knows that I try an find a way to get what I need at a low cost, or free. Well, in this case, I needed to know my blood type and I didn't want to use my sorry insurance or pay a third party company like LabCorp to tell me. Plus I am too big of a baby to test myself. So after doing a little research, I considered donating blood which will allow you to find out your blood type for me. The red cross dates didn't work but luckily a representative informed me about this place. I am so glad they did. I was literally able to go on the same day I called and was in and out in under an hour. The questions and pre-screening honestly took the longest but the blood part was quick. The ladies working there really put me at ease because I was high key terrified as it was my first time donating. After they collected the blood I then sat around and ate some snacks before leaving. Overall it was truly a great experience and knowing that I helped save a life was even better.

I look inside, there were 8-10 people in line and they were still taking plasma. Not to be disrespectful or callous but the whole thing reeked of bullshit. I understand that things could happen but if it was that bad, why not just send out an email, text, or message through the app and shutdown earlier rather than just keep having a normal business day and then sending security out and writing a note to close 15-20 minutes early when you can't just shutdown and leave anyway? It's a gamble coming there because if they want to mail it in, you basically wasted your time and travel. They don't let you fill out your intake early anymore beyond 30 minutes and you often have to redo it because the wait is so long. According to their own rules, if you're in before closing and you pass your screening, you'll be seen. It's just on you to complete the donation. You also have to watch some of those screeners because they can bullshit you too and defer you just to get you out because they want to chill. You basically have to write off 3-4 hours minimum to donate. Besides the chronic short staffing, you have to factor in employee breaks and people cutting line. When it comes to line cutting, you have to be aware at all times because people will literally walk in and not only try to get in front of you but will cut the entire line. People will also let randoms with sob stories cut or reserve spots for their friends. Waiting for the place to open is even worse since you're outside and line cutting and fighting is even worse then. The employees, management, and security don't pay attention and won't do shit when you try talking to them but they'll throw you and whoever's starting shit out if you stand up for yourself. Hell, I've seen them call the police to throw somebody out who complained out loud when the employees were watching TV instead of sticking donors. There's also been cases before where they'll send security out to try and keep people from coming in well before closing with some crazy excuse but they're still up and running. Another tactic they do is to offer an express pass to come back tomorrow when they're in the mood to fuck off. The problem with that is they don't allow them to be used after 5PM and it only applies to the screening line instead of the full visit like Octapharma designed. Contacting corporate is useless since the communication is redirected to them rather than someone with oversight. They basically get to run themselves.

The…read moreEileen Murphree McMillin Blood Center at Houston Methodist Hospital makes it easy to donate both whole blood as well as platelets. Appointments are required but can easily be made through the Houston Methodist website. The blood center itself is located on the 8th floor of the Fondren Building. This can be a little confusing to locate since the hospital has a number of conjoined buildings so be sure to check signs or ask any hospital employee for directions. Unfortunately they do not have an option to donate on behalf of a specific patient (or provide a credit towards their medical care) but regardless, there is always a patient in need. The staff do a great job with the screening questions and vitals checks before the donation and ensure that your skin is cleaned for the appropriate amount of time following an auditory timer. They also do a great job checking to see how you're feeling both during and after the donation. Snacks and bottled drinks are always offered and they always have a fun free gift. In the past I've been given a fanny pack, a long sleeve shirt, and an insulated metal water bottle like a Stanley dupe. I honestly love this water bottle and each time I use it, I'm reminded of how I am able to help others. Donating blood is something that is important to me and I hope you will consider doing it too!
