This is a Malaysian Chinese BBQ place which also has some Malaysian dishes (as well as Hakka yong tau foo). Malaysian Chinese BBQ differs from the usual Hong Kong variety in being less sweet. The chef is from Ipoh & lived in Singapore (Toa Payoh) for 3 years. Malaysian fried ho fen was, the chef said, almost like Penang Char Kway Teow. It was great. The shrimps were big & fresh & there were a lot of them. There was a lot of egg in the noodles (something rare here) & there was a good wok flavour. Indeed, it was almost like Penang Char Kway Teow. The chef proudly said that there was no onion in it (as it should be). There was a slight spicy kick. The belachan was not too strong. Got $10 of roast pork. It was pretty cheap & it was great: a good mix of fat, meat & skin. The skin was light & crispy & tasty. The meat did not have too strong of a flavour.

The perfect spot in Guelph for Chinese BBQ, even if they're aren't that many options in the area. Terrific Roast Pork - expertly prepared for that juicy, savoury meat and crsipy skin! In addition, the BBQ pork is just the right level of sweet. I'll be heading back to try more items, for sure! Friendly counter service and they were takeout only when I visited (April 2023).

Best authentic Chinese BBQ in Guelph. Beef ho fen, roast pork, and charshu are a must.

The next time I tried the blue cheese one... It was also very good... But I think I liked the first one. It's the one on the third level... Kind of wild toppings. I just remember it had maple flavor... And I want to see fried cheese curds on it or something. Sorry I should've written it down. Anyway you'll enjoy this place. Feels kind of like a college hang out. On both nights, the server was very attentive. Check them out they're worth it.

However, the last time we were in, we had a new waitress and we went for the specials deal (Monday-Friday, 2pm-5pm) $5 for certain beers, and $10 (or 3 for $25) for appetizers. We clearly told our waitress that we were interested in the deals by asking her questions and pointing at the menu. She then states that we are able to do that and took our order without any other information. We told her that we wanted the 3 appetizers split between us and ordered 3 plates of wings. She brings out two plates (one with 8 wings and the other with 16) she brings the bill and she only then informs us that she cannot put the deal towards the 16 wings and can only do it for the 8 piece. To my boyfriend and I, this did not make sense but still continued to pay. From this mishap we didn't even realize she did not give us the discount price ($5) for the beer as well.

I've come here twice and I haven't been disappointed yet…read more There's so many choices that it might be a bit overwhelming but everyone is very helpful with suggestions. If you want to try something new or if you want to stick by your old favourites, there's something for everyone. The first time I was here, I decided to try something new. I had the seitan platter which was the perfect introduction. The seitan was cooked in four different styles so it was great to see which type you like. The second time, I just had a seitan appetizer which looked like a good imitation of roasted duck but it had a smooth texture and it was flavoured well. Keep in mind that the portions after the appetizers are big. You can either share it or have some to yourself but regardless, there is a chance you might take some home. No complaints though. Both times I have ordered fried rice with different toppings that are mixed in with the rice. I love the way they make this because they don't cook it like other restaurants where they fry the rice and you feel bloated and heavy. Zen' drive is cooked perfectly so you don't taste that fried feeling and though you will get that filled feeling, you won't feel lethargic after. I also order tea both times. My recommendation is the rose tea. The teapot is so small and cute but you can smell the tea and it leaves you feeling relaxed. Side tidbit: the place is a legit house but they converted it into a restaurant. They kept some of the features like a fireplace that give it a cozy/homey feel. It is such a cute and ingenious way to go about a restaurant business.

Unlike the Toronto area that has night owl establishments prepandemic open from 11pm to 2am, Guelph does not offer these services. So one of the few places open was this establishment, when you walk in, you're invited by a hot serve bench, ayce options starting at $4 (if you est two kinds it goes up to $5 and incrementally increases by $1 with more selection. I did not try this. There are some seatings around for 2 and 4 patrons. We ordered the red bbq pork with pineapple and baby bok choy with rice. The rice tastes like it was recooked from yesterday (not spoiled but certainly would not last night -could be from sitting on the rice cooker all evening), the bok choy some had some...squishy sides and it could just be bruising from handling, it was garlicky and slightly over cooked. The red bbq was edible, more on the sweet side. The whole variety came up to be $20 easily feeding 3 to 4 people. I am an Asian patron, ordered in english, maybe I'll try in Cantonese next time? Its definitely a hidden gem if you're looking for a $4 bite that's an ayce Canadian-Chinese, as an alternative to pizza, burgers, poutine, sandwiches...
