It's also located in a dump of a town, Sheffield, which has little or next to nothing to offer. With the exception of the first day of deer season, which can be a fun time to stop in to hear various hunting stories, the patrons are generally comprised of beer swilling, baseball cap wearing oil rig workers, factory types or those unemployed but looking for jobs were few if any exist. Indeed you'll find that a lot of the patrons seem to be stopping by more often to purchase 6 packs to take out. Towne Tavern is basically a beer guzzling dive bar and unfortunately not one of a higher order, but being situated in Clarendon, a remote sort of has been, "seen better days" type of town, one really couldn't expect much more. I've been here a few times over the years, and because of its generally depressing "down on your luck" atmosphere, haven't really got much good to say about it. Though not all that bad looking on the inside, the customers it attracts tend not to be the most savory of characters. The bar and, for that matter the town itself has a reputation for having had plenty of bar room brawls and street frights, but since it is a small town I think that such isn't all that frequent; you just hear about them more often. And if there is a fight, most of those seem to have been between relatives, a that fact may not be too surprising since everyone in Clarendon seems to be related in one way or another. Indeed, though I can't vouch for the factual truth behind it, Clarendon has long had a rumored local reputation for incest even to the point that one of the most commonly told jokes about it is that Clarendon guys look forward attending their annual family reunions as it's one of the best places for them to pick up chicks. If you go here, your best bet is to park in the dirt parking lot along the side of the tavern as on the main street you might be subject to some logging or oil well truck traffic that often have damaging chains either dangling or swinging from their sides. On the good part, and my reason for going two stars instead of one, is that I've always been well treated at Towne Tavern, but then again having grown up nearby, I know most of the people.

Until my one friend said that it is like a Ponderosa was turned into a gay club. I think that hits it on the nail. It feels like it was a steakhouse at some point, whether or not it was truly a Ponderosa I can't be sure. But it does have that feel of some type of either buffet or family restaurant that was taken over by rainbows and turned into a dance club. It is kind of vibrant in here. We showed up on a Friday night which is their drag show night. Cover at the door and you walk in and it feels like it is super quiet, that is until you get out of the small corridor. We walked right up to the bar and ordered our drinks. Note: this is a cash only bar, so have some cash with you or hit up an ATM on your way here. The bartenders were amazing and handled the surge of customers throughout the night. Since there was a drag show happening we did not get to participate in any dancing and thus we did not move far from the bar area. That was alright by us, we actually got to see a lot of the ins and outs of this place by just sitting there. There is food available, not sure when the kitchen closes, but they do have menus and you can order throughout the night. On drag nights the bar gets hit at odd times with a surge of customers wanting a refill on their drinks. I might suggest you get two and wait for the crowd to dwindle. To me the mixed drinks felt a little on the small side, but they did the deed. I stuck with a margarita the whole night and it seemed like most people in here did not know what a margarita was. For a strip mall gay club, I definitely have had my ups and downs. But this one was an up, we enjoyed ourselves. As for the reviewer that said this is the "trashiest gay bar" they have ever been to in their life and begs to say that those that read the review "can't tell me they disagree." I disagree, I have been to some trashy gay bars and this does not hold a candle to them. Not a dis, just an observation.
