Plantables is a wonderful destination place within the city of Redding, if you like plants,…read moreflowers, interesting yard or landscape design or garden art, iron work, antiques, night lights, music, really good wine, and economically priced light entrees this is your spot! It's the perfect place to enjoy the company of someone special or lots of good friends. I'm Bob Henderson and many of you know me as Bonsai Bob. I must confess, when I first heard about this not-for-profit opportunity for students, I was intrigued but hadn't made it over there to check it out, until I met Kirkwood one evening by chance, on a difficult plant extraction expedition. We have become friends since and I fell in love with Plantables. That said, I would not be endorsing the business if there wasn't something special about the atmosphere created by Kirkwood and Donna the owners, and the vision they have for investing a life savings into a business model designed to benefit young people. One of their main focuses is to teach young people how to serve customers in a public environment, operate parts of the business, as well as care for and grow a variety of plants to sell to the customers. Kirkwood (a landscape design architect and plant educator) and Donna, have a history of working in many places around the world, creating rich garden experiences for others and wanted to bring something special back to the Redding community. If you ask them, I'm sure they would love to tell you about the things they have been involved with Globally. The atmosphere is always wonderful with medium-to small seating areas around for semi-private conversations surrounded by pockets of bushes, flowers and unique art garden. Everywhere you turn there is something interesting to see. While the menu is not large, what is served has been really good! I love the pinenes with extra basil spread? Additionally, for several weeks of the year, Kirkwood and helpers teach a number of plant enrichment courses through Shasta College. When I retire, I can see myself volunteering there because of the mission to the students and the community.

This location is on Churn Creek, just north of where it crosses the 44 freeway. Just go north past the McDonald's an it's on the left, can't miss it! Parking was easy enough. We go in and OK, where do we look for what we want. There supposed to be some staff or something to help out but couldn't get anyone. So we wander down some asiles and don't see what we want. OK, I see the tool area, so we go over there. No one to help either. I did manage to find the chain saws, really big ass ones too that might chop my foot off with. I just wanted a little hand held job. I found a couple of options, but wow, these prices are a bit high, OK, higher that I wanted to pay for something I'm gonna use just occasionally. I'm not some pro landscaper. I did look on Amazon and those prices seemed more in line for an occasional user like me. Oh, well, we outta here. I'll say service is severely lacking here, but I guess you know that going into it.

I've been buying from Vic for years... well over 50 visits to his place. All good... but Recently…read moreI started having bad experiences. 1) went in for decomposed granite. Didn't pay attention to what actually went into trailer. Trusted the quality of what I was getting. Get home only to find out it's full of rocks. Rocks big enough to make it unusable to fit in between crevices of stepping stones. I had to return it.. which was something I've never done. Vic took it back, helped me unload it and was apologetic. Vic personally told me he "owed me one". 2) a month later I purchased 2 yards of concrete mix from Vic... was pouring concrete that day and found myself short about 1/16 to 1/8 yard. I went back to Vic.. kindly showed him photos of how I was a quarter wheelbarrow short.. and politely reminded him how I had to return the decomposed granite a month back due to all the rock that got scooped in with it. I thought Vic would Comp me such a small amount of concrete mix.. I was asking for 1/8 yard.. which at $38 per yard the math works out to be $4.75 of mix.. Vic proceeded to overcharge me at $6 .. I'm not upset over the price.. it's the principle of him "owing me one". I will start going to axner excavating even though it's 3 times the distance from my house. Vic lost a customer based on his apparent "word".

They have really great products, but our favorites are there organic soil mix and mushroom compost. The organic soil grows really great vegetables and Vic is very particular about not getting pesticide and chemical ridden material for his soils like most places in this area. Every three or four years if you add mushroom compost to the surface of your garden it will continue growing and producing in abundance. We found the mushroom compost to be very good or fruit trees as well. Put it around the base of your peach and nectarine trees to stave off leaf curl and produce sweet juicy fruit. Thanks Guys!

It's got cement floors and isn't very attractive inside (no carpeting, few windows, etc.). This could account for some of the messiness. But I found the staff helpful and knowledgable, as per the first review by Brooke. After I got past my first uncomfortability (I'm an older lady now, and feel a little out of place around younger service staff anymore), I was able to get good advice and was able to do some comparison shopping -- I've researched my materials ahead of time, and know what the wholesalers would sell to the public for, and the prices are fair. I didn't notice that the customers or staff were dirty, although the young'un at the counter appeared to be trying to grow a beard. As a customer, i'd like y'all to know that I'm a stable, middle class older woman, and I shower daily, wash my hands regularly and cover my mouth when I sneeze. I participate in several community volunteer activities with children, local churches and schools, I work, pay taxes and donate regularly to good causes, and I don't smoke marijuana or take any drug stronger than asprin (although I'll occasionally have a glass of wine or on occasional mixed drink with my girlfriends). I'm just letting you know this because I'm probably not the 'worst element' around ~ hahaha. When I was there, the other customers were mostly in my age and income range (by appearance). Meanwhile, if you don't know what you want before you go, it could be really confusing, since they have a huge selection and it's not real obvious what everything is for. So get someone to help you -- they'll be able to give you suggestions and answer your questions.

I called the shop to get help with their online ordering process, in fact, I called the shop a few times regarding my order and they were really nice about it every time. I had just had a stressful experience with another florist in the bay area and being that I'm in Southern California and unable see the arrangement before it goes out, I was a little nervous about ordering. I wish I could remember her name but she was so nice and even though she had some of what I wanted in the arrangement, she was honest and helpful by suggesting that instead of doing the arrangement that day, which she could have easily done and Im sure it would have been lovely, that we send the arrangement out the following day after she receives her morning delivery so that the flowers would be "hydrated & fresh". I really appreciated that and since I wasn't in a hurry, I agreed. The flowers were delivered mid day and they were so pretty. My Dad immediately called me and sent pictures, he thought they were so beautiful and he even commented on the lovely vase. I was expecting a standard clear vase but they put the arrangement in a lovely gold trimmed one that complimented the beautiful arrangement. She also was able to fit my somewhat long message onto the card very nicely. This arrangement was so important to me because it was for my Dad who has just lost his little brother and I, my uncle, unexpectedly and tragically. The beautiful white roses with white lillies that will open up and bloom so beautifully is a wonderful and touching homage to my beloved Uncle and West Side Florist did an incredible job of being able to capture my feelings and be the messenger of my deepest sympathies and love for both my uncle and my dad.
