This is my first full winter with a woodstove. I never had one in my house as a kid and my parents…read moredidn't have any guidance for us (it's their house). So in an abundance of caution I decided to get the chimney inspected to make sure we were all set to burn firewood all winter. I bought a cord of wood and ready to do battle with learning how to keep the house warmer more efficiently this winter. I'm not sure why our chimney tech was in a bad mood, maybe it was the rain maybe I was his 4th call of the day but it started off sullen with an already blackened dirty face. He didn't introduce himself and just marched through my house with his wet dirty boots on over and over again to get more tools from his truck. I was told on the phone that the $99 full inspection service would have him check everything including going on the roof to check the chimney stack and everything to make sure we were safe. He didn't do that but just looked up at the chimney from the deck to "visually" check and had some sort of camera with a 3ft long extender. ummm not really worth the extra fee but fine. Then he had a hard time taking apart the pipe that goes from the woodstove to the wall. fine. then the real attitude came. He started reprimanding me about the type of wood that was burned, the amount of creosote (god help me if I used a layman's term like soot or ash, I was corrected everytime) in the chimney and that my wood was wet and I was doing everything wrong. I've worked with a lot of technicians from many fields like plumbers, electricians, installers, insulation, windows, roofers, hvac and propane (ie I checked everything in this house). Every one of the experts that came to house always had tips of how to improve but it's usually said in a way like "keep it in mind for next time" or "how to prevent more issues next time" or "what to look out for" but this guy seemed to personally offended by the wood. we store it outside on a firewood rack and have it mostly covered by tarps or manufacturers cover. we live on the water so there is lots of wind and it's been really difficult keeping the tarps from flapping (even with rocks). So after he sees the amount of creosote in the chimney, he quotes $400 for a level 2 cleaning. I have to call the homeowners to convey this message and to convince them to move forward with the service. I dunno if he is used to people just saying yes or having no hesitancy but it took 20mins for me to convey all this information to people that were not present and could not see anything and are also new to owning a working wood stove. he was given to the ok to proceed but good golly the attitude of sullenness that came from him like I personally offended his entire craft of cleaning and chimney sweeping I will never use this company again. the chimney is cleaner so that's why they have some stars but WOW I don't want or need that attitude for a SERVICE YOU ARE PROVIDING in my house.
