In 2014 Grounded did a $46K project at our home. It's been a while and the true "test" of landscape design is how the project ages as the plants mature. First of all, the layout design was good and we've been pleased with that. That said: 1. They planted "street trees" in the shaded area off our deck. The Chanticleer pears are ugly and messy. They get black spots on the leaves and branches break off constantly. In fact, we just lost all 5 of them in the recent storm - poor choice, wrong spot, ugly trees. It seems that most of the plants they selected for our yard were "junk" plants/cheap for them to purchase, and bland and unimaginative in a yard. I trusted and didn't know better. Slowly we're working at replacing most of what Caleb picked. 2. They suggested and installed a dry well near raised garden beds and planted arborvitae along a fence near it. A trench drain from our driveway feeds into a pipe along that side. The arborvitae roots have totally infiltrated and clogged the drywell and now I'm looking at a huge expense to have everything torn out and done correctly. Multiple experts pointed out that arborvitae should never have been planted near a drywell because of their root systems. 4. A whole section of the front lawn was graded incorrectly so water pools and it's a perpetual issue with mushy soil and thin grass in that area. 5. As experts they should have counseled us differently about the size and width of raised garden beds. They're too wide for practical use and they're falling apart. 2. The deck has many issues. The installation work was shoddy and the stairs and rails feel loose and shaky. Boards were lined up across much of it without staggered ends - in fact, along one section the seams are in a straight line. There are also cheap shims wedged under stairs. The rails were poorly cut and pieced together. I know another family who used Grounded's services and since then, they've had most of it redone by another company due to issues they also experienced. It looks "good" but doesn't hold up as quality work. I can't say enough good things about Caleb and his crew. Caleb came for a consultation and right away he understood our vision. Our goal was to remove all the grass from our large backyard, and fill the space with native, easy-maintenance plants and trees. The design was ready for approval after only a week or 2. It included a huge variety of plants, trees and grasses, as well as a fire pit, arbor and walking paths throughout. Caleb's goal was to give us a multi-use outdoor space, while also giving our son a fun place to adventure and play. Caleb was easy to work with and listened to our needs. The project took about 4 weeks in total. The crew were friendly and courteous, always on time, and took real pride in their work. The attention to detail was top notch! We've had our new backyard for about a week and are so thrilled with the results. I have nothing but praise for Caleb and the crew. Job well done, and money well spent! read more

We had great experience with the driveway and landscape project by Grounded Landscape Design. It was a complete replacement of our old driveway with pavers, rebuild of our backyard patio, and installation of all the landscape and lightings throughout. Initially, we were stressed out by the size of the project, and worried whether the project would be over our budget, and its disruption to our daily life. We were pleasely surprised by the result! The final outcome of the project by Grounded Landscape Design, driveway, patio and everything, look beautiful besides being very functional and serving our day-to-day needs. During the project, the Grounded Landscape Design team were very efficient and friendly. We really enjoyed working with Karen, who came up with the great design within our budget, with Francisco and the construction team who did a great work and always cleaned up after each day's work. UPDATE: Not long after posting my original review, I did finally receive an email from Jesse, apologizing for the lack of response. I also received an email from Kathryn apologizing and offering to still meet with my husband and me. While we appreciated their apologies, unfortunately, after 23 days of ghosting, the whole affair left enough of a negative impression that we politely declined. I have, though, increased my rating up one star as a reflection of their eventual responses. We have since found another company and are looking forward to our new landscape! 6/2/22 After reading good reviews, then contacting Grounded through their website and receiving a prompt response, I had high hopes for this company. We are in the final stages of a complete and total exterior remodel of our house, including expanded outdoor spaces, and are in need of a comprehensive landscape design and installation. I talked at length with Jesse on the phone about our project and he followed up with an email connecting me with their lead designer, Kathryn, who was to then contact with me about scheduling an onsite consultation. That was the last time I heard anything from anyone at Grounded. After 23 days and follow up emails on my part to both Jesse and Kathryn - nothing. Completely ghosted. We are talking with other companies, and we will, I'm sure, find one for our project, but unfortunately, I have little good to say about our experience with Grounded. Caleb and his company were a huge disappointment. I think many of these other reviews were written before he hired his new designer, "Jacob". We got stuck with the new designer and he made one mistake after another. We kept contacting Caleb hoping he would fix the problems, but all we ever got were excuses. In the end, we ended up with a fire ring with an area that was only 60% of the size it was supposed to be based on our contract. We tried to withhold ten percent of the final payment as a means of getting him to address the problem. Instead, he threatened to put a lien on our home and charge us interest on the balance. In the end, we paid the balance just to have it over with. We are extremely disappointed with our experience and would advise great caution to anybody considering working with him in the future. read more

Our experience with Caleb and the entire crew at Grounded Landscape Design was incredible from start to finish. Our project was complex - basically an entire overhaul of our large backyard including a pond, patio, deck, yard space and pathways. From the get go we knew that Caleb was the right person for our job. His vision and ideas are like no other landscape architect that we met with previously. We loved how his ideas meshed with meeting our needs. There were a few moments where I was unsure of the direction and he was always willing to walk me through the process and help me understand where we were going. I really cannot say enough positive things about our experience from start to finish. They were on our property for at least 6 weeks and we loved working with them. What a first impression! Caleb came out for a consultation and it was immediately evident he was unlike the other landscapers we spoke to. He freely gave ideas on what we could do with our challenging space which helped us know our visions aligned and he would be a great fit for our project. He really embraced the challenges of our yard and turned them into perks. I loved getting to see the entire plan drawn out for our yard before we went ahead with the project. The guys came out in rain or shine and worked so hard. They are incredibly hard working and respectful, cleaning up at the end of each day, making sure our gates were shut and fence panel secured since we have dogs. The price was reasonable, the work done in a timely manner and the results are amazing. Our yard looks so beautiful, I would have never thought of everything they put into it. The arbors, patio and natural looking rock steps all just blew me away! The plant selection was just what we needed, wanted and then some! We hired Caleb because we thought he could give our major landscape re-design project his personal attention, being that his company was smaller than other companies we researched. What a mistake! The project dragged on for over a year, was over-budget, and unfinished. On several of the most important days of the job (the pouring of several huge, curving, concrete walls & concrete retaining walls/beds and electrical), he wasn't even here! The wall came out several feet too tall. He also failed to get proper permits for this project, even after we continued to request them. The project was way over budget and he failed to factor into his budget concrete stairs and WE had to ask him "what about stairs?" on what was a dirt ramp after the concrete guys left. So, then that amount was tacked onto our invoice and a different concrete company had to come out which equaled more expense compared to doing it all at once. Also, his final design was unsafe. A child, elderly person, or anyone not paying attention could easily fall right over the stairwell onto the concrete patio 8 feet below! He offered to put a railing up, but with the budget he wanted to apply to it, it would have looked cheap. Not to mention that we he had lost our trust by this point. We opted to just take care of it ourselves. We are happy with the railing - it is sturdy and has the right look, but the original design Caleb proposed to us was clean with no railing and THAT was the look we really wanted. Other areas of dissatisfaction include: *being charged $800 for the planting 6 bamboo plants to provide privacy. These plants are all under 3 feet tall, look like they are dying, and have provided no privacy whatsoever. Caleb has not come out to look at them. *Our project began in September of 2013! In fact, almost half of the plants Caleb planted have died...and he has never come out to look at his plantings, which he promised us he would after one year and offer replacements. So many of the plants weren't even planted deep into the ground. From the beginning told him we wanted more color - plants that would attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds - he brought mainly grasses & ferns. We do not feel we got what we paid for. There was no thought to the plant groupings - basically, we will need to re-do it at some point when we have the budget to do so. *There is a water feature in our yard and he installed a pump to created circulation in the reflective pool - it doesn't accomplish the job at all. Caleb promised us a thick, dark black pond lining...we had to insist on his fulfilling this promise...he was happy with a spotty looking liner that showed cracks. *One of our cars was dented in two spots on the day that one of his workers installed a screen wall/sliding door on our carport. We had asked if we should move the car beforehand and the answer was there is no need to. The car even had the same color paint of the door frame on it. We brought this to his attention twice, but he never responded! *There were so many days that Caleb didn't even show up...he would often blame the weather, but you can only do that for so long. This project took almost a year to complete when it was projected to be completed in 4 months. We have been homeowners for over 17 years and this is the first negative review we've ever written about anyone we've hired. We waited to write it, to give Caleb time to respond/take interest in his project/ make things right. He has not. He says he offers "healing gardens' but sadly all I feel when I look at my yard is regret. read more
