They are an excellent company to work with for the following reasons: QUALITY - paver layout is beautiful, & they installed extra gravel & drainage pipes to address my "swamp" COMMUNICATION - I always knew exactly what was happening, when the workers/trucks would be here. Before work began, Jose responded promptly to my requests for changes in design, gave detailed drawings &estimates PRICE - it was a very fair price, and lower than the other bid I got for a simple rectangular design DESIGN - my requirements were a bigger patio that covers up the swamp. Jose came up with a plan that has curves to fit in well with the curves in my existing landscape, plus the swamp is gone! He gave me advice on which sizes of pavers would work well in the design. PROFESSIONALISM - every day the team was on time and left the area cleaned up. They laid and re-laid pavers until they were satisfied with the look. After 2 years living in our Issaquah rambler, we were tired of our grubby back yard. With a very sloping hillside slumping into it, the constant roll of rocks, and puddling of runoff made the space not very enjoyable. Our small deck, and a big dirt patch was also not a clean or functional space for us or our dog - so it was time for a change. Once we set our minds to investing in a renovation, I met with 7 (yes 7!) concrete, rockery, and paver providers to discuss the projected heat their ideas, and solicit quotes. A number of the providers were visionless, one was rude, and another was wildly expensive (twice as much as any of the others). Enter Jose and J Zamora Construction. While my initial vision for the space was admittedly to have a concrete patio, with a paver retaining wall - after meeting with Jose, my mind changed. In the most genuine and non-pressuring tone possible, he educated me about the benefits of using pavers (repairability, less cracking risk, better drainage, etc). That, combined with both his understanding of the challenges of my property, as well as his unique lense on a design for our space - made Jose a stand out. I also greatly appreciated that when I expressed specific wishes, he did not take offense when those ideas didn't align with his initial recommendation. When some providers acted put-off when I said "I don't want to take out this tree" (etc.), Jose took it in stride and offered solutions rather than trying to convince me that my preference was unreasonable. After viewing our property, he was prompt, kind, and fair in his quote to us. His documentation was thorough and clear. That, along with his truly aesthetically, and functionally minded vision for our space convinced me to completely pivot from "I'm doing concrete", to "let's go with pavers". After hiring Jose, he recommended products that suited our combined vision for my yard, was transparent about potential overages, and ultimately executed a project that is beyond my dreams for our difficult space. His crew of 6 busted their behinds for 4 solid days to crack it out. They were prompt, respectful of my property and neighbors; and thorough in their daily, and end of project cleanup. They even went above and beyond to carefully re-lay our dog's invisible fence line, which was displaced in the underground drainage portion of our project. Ultimately, we're left with the addition of nearly 1000 square feet to our livable space. An area that started as a grubby dirt patch has become a clean and stunning use of space. It flows with the natural landscape, and looks cohesive with our very mid century home. We have had neighbors (known to us and new introductions) stop by with their jaws on the floor - one even saying "you've made this yard the showpiece of the mountain". A friend passed along Jose's company to me and I am SO glad I went with them build my retaining wall and add pavers to my front walkway! Great communication, straightforward estimate, licensed/bonded & certified on retaining wall requirements, answered my many questions, helped me make a few adjustments to meet my budget, arrived super punctually, were very careful and hard working, efficient (stayed on my job until completion and didn't bounce off to another one) and were very courteous. The original front of my home was a notably sloped lawn, that was very difficult to mow, and even harder to keep the grass green as water ran right off, and it didn't have any steps up to the front door. People would inadvertently park on the grass slope too because the eco-friendly edging didn't deter them enough. Ugh! Walking up the short and steep driveway was the only option to get to the front door, which was a nightmare in the snow/ice/rain. I had a few bids where guys tried to tell me I didn't need drainage, etc. and I knew that was not accurate given the slope. I'm so glad I didn't take any shortcuts- this was a big investment that had to be done by a knowledgable and trustworthy crew. The work was intense to watch! The crew was very careful as they removed big chunks of the soil/lawn, and did everything by the book to ensure proper drainage and support. J Zamora Construction helped add value to my home, gain additional parking, and made it so much better looking overall! Jose and his crew also helped add a few large pavers leading up to the front door, which also adds a really nice finishing touch. TL;DR: The JZamora team is amazing. Hire them. Our project in a nutshell: (1) Multi-tier retaining wall (2) Synthetic turf (3) Expanded driveway/walkway/stairs in pavers My wife and I counted our appointment book to make sure we weren't exaggerating - we inquired with 21(!) different contractors (half being unresponsive or quick emails). JZamora was absolutely the best choice for us. José spent the most time on-site with us at our initial appointment, making sure he understood our goals and wishes. He offered his expertise and opinions without steamrolling ours. He provided the most detailed quote out of all the contractors with pricing, names, and product links for different materials, per square foot breakdown, a diagram with accurate measurements that made sense. His background in Accounting paired with almost 30 years of industry experience through his dad, Blas, made us comfortable knowing where every dollar would go. José runs an impressive operation, managing and working alongside his dad and crew. They were very mindful and considerate of our neighbors. They cleaned throughout the process, ensuring rock and debris stayed out of the road. They parked their equipment out of the way and covered up the work site at the end of the day. We had a specific paver picked as our top choice, however the reserved stock unexpectedly became unavailable. We gave José the ok to proceed with our second choice if he had to. While he could have easily just settled for the second choice, he went above and beyond to search around, as far as Spokane, to find stock of our first choice and he made it happen! This paver was used on our walkway, driveway, and stair landing. Hands down, it's our favorite part of the entire project. We don't expect things to always go as planned so we appreciate that José communicated and consulted with us every step of the way. Some contractors we've dealt with in the past would proceed with their decisions and then tell us after-the-fact "that's just what we had to do; there was no other choice." José will take the time to brainstorm options and backup plans with us and make a true effort to accommodate our requests. If there was really no other choice, he would at least answer our questions, no matter how silly they are, to alleviate any of our concerns. It means a lot to us that José and Blas actually cares. We didn't consider some things in the original plan, but they kindly worked with us to stay as close as possible to our budget and churned out an awesome result. We contracted Zamora Masonry to build a rather unique fence in our front yard. Because of so many underground utilities using cedar fence posts 24" deep was a problem. So we opted for stone posts instead. I'm glad we did. Another advantage of stone is that they don't rot over time and are virtually maintenance free. Jose came out and showed us samples available from his supplier and we settled on Capstohn Masonry Products. These are made with 100% concrete and are as solid as a rock and very heavy. Jose and his crew put bases under the surface that only had to be about 8" or 9" deep avoiding all the utilities. Each post is 24"x24" and 45"H with the capstone on top. Several custom cuts were made to each column to accommodate the cedar rails which were 6x6 smooth cedar timbers. Entire job only took two days to complete. Jose was super easy to work with and very trusting. I highly recommend Zamora Construction. When we get ready to replace our existing driveway with stone I'll be using Jose again. read more
