Visited the Grims Dyke bar/restaurant with a big group today for a birthday, we had seats under a canopy outside in the garden. The surroundings are beautifully kept and tranquil and fabulous on a sunny dry day.
Orders were taken and paid for at the bar, the service was slow and disorganised, and as they didn't have enough shot glasses for 8 people so we had to wait around while they tried to gather enough glasses! Finally after scraping together an odd bod lot of glasses we proceeded with our order, at this point we just wanted our drinks and to be sitting in the sunshine.
Between our table we ordered burgers and chips, fish and chips, afternoon cream tea, waffles and ice cream, sandwiches and salads.... everyone enjoyed their meals which were fresh, well presented, tasty and good sized portions. I was pleasantly surprised as based on the service I wasn't expecting much. My afternoon tea looked good on arrival, although the sandwich fillings were a little sparse which unfortunately let the afternoon tea down. The cakes and scones were nice, I especially enjoyed the chocolate eclair and carrot cake, we received a fruit and plain scone each which were big however there was not enough cream and jam for 4 scones but the staff happily supplied another batch for free. We had to chase down the side plates and tea which was very annoying as you would expect them to bring these before the cake stand of treats.
The hotel itself is clean and had fresh airy, clean toilets. Whilst there we had the beautiful sounds of the music room coming through the windows which was opera and classical in nature.. perfect with my glass of Merlot.
Overall I enjoyed the day, the food was good but the service needs working on. Will definitely return although more so for the lovely, peaceful surroundings and nice gardens. read more
