It was awkward for a few minutes when my daughter and I first arrived. The bar seating was full and the staff didn't greet us. We just walked around a bit until a few people left, and Dolores greeted us a soon as we were seated. We tried Syrah and cab sauv and chose to buy a bottle of the latter. They're both medium bodied, but I prefer bolder wines. We also got a glass of sweet white wine called Bianca, it was really good. The drive to this winery located just outside of Lexington is stunning. I loved the hills and the big horse farms with their fenced in yards. Pulling into the winery you see it is on the small side but the landscaping is very nice and the tasting room is cozy. They had unique bar stools or tables inside as well as seating outside. There were a few other couples there while we were there and they were very friendly and we enjoyed visiting with them. But the reason for the 5 stars was the manger. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about their wines, as well as the area of Lexington. We did a tasting of 3 wines for $5 which included a wine glass as well. They had a few whites and a lot of reds. We stayed a lot longer than we intended and had a great time. They have a happy hour on Fridays, and I really wish we could have made it back to that. I went here as part of my bachelorette weekend in Lexington and it was probably the best part of the weekend! Dolores, the bartender, was super welcoming and was really thorough in explaining what the wines tasted like and tried to branch us out of our comfort zones! The owner also came by and said hello to us and made it an extra special experience by picking us fresh flowers and gave us food to give to the animals! After going to one winery, I made the decision to go to this one. Grimes. The name sticks out to me. Maybe it's because I like Grimes (the music-Look her up. You probably won't like her but I listened to her heavily through a break-up a few years ago-super helpful and besides, she's dating Elon Musk now). This winery was a little out of the way but I think it was worth it. It seemed more farmlike than other wineries I've visited. Growing up in southeastern KY, I feel like KY farms are much different than farms in other places and this place gave me that feeling. They don't focus heavily on the dry or sweet side so there's something for everyone. They're also dog-friendly and the other people sitting at the bar on that day seemed to be owners and/or regulars. Everyone there seemed like they were ready to have a good time. The bartender was also a nice guy. I could've easily stayed for a while. Bottles were reasonably priced. The wine I remember the most from that day was a blueberry rose wine. I should've bought a bottle but at the time I was trying to cut back on buying so much wine. Current status - I have one bottle of wine to my name so I'd say mission accomplished. Now big beer bottles to my name... that's another discussion for another review. I'd say of the wineries I've visited in Lexington, this is definitely one at the top of the list. You should absolutely go out of your way to visit this place. read more

This was the second of the three wineries we visited on the day, and I think it was my favorite of the three. On the main plus side, it was an actual winery. A stand alone vineyard and winery. There is a decent sized parking lot, if you happen to be going with a group. Inside, there is a cozy little seating area near a fireplace. Tastings happen around the central bar. I like the rustic tractor-seat-y stools. The gentleman working, leading the tasting, was wonderful. Friendly, knowledgeable and ready with recommendations based on your preferred tastes. The fella prefers dry and I tend to prefer sweeter wines. Grimes Mill has both options covered. Tastings are $6 and include three wines of your choosing and you get to keep the glass. I am drowning in winery tasting glasses these days, but I'm not really complaining :-P I opted for the Bianca, Moscato and Fantasia. The moscato drinks more like an ice wine. Very VERY sweet. They have a blueberry wine that is one of the best I have had. Sweet, but still tart. It was a nice surprise. I ended up getting a bottle of the Bianca. Bottles are reasonably priced, and even more so if you join the wine club. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit! Even more because they are also dog-friendly and have two golden-doodles roaming around to puppy-love on you. If you are in the Lexington area, I would certainly recommend a visit to Grimes Mill Winery. read more

Came out for their holiday open house with some friends and was impressed with the hospitality here! The 5 of us girls all did the $6 wine tasting which consisted of 3 samples of our choice of wines. The guy spent a ton of time explaining all the wines and giving suggestions of what we'd like. It was a great experience! I want to come Back in the summer and enjoy the outdoor area! read more

This is on the top of my favorites list (quality and pricing). I have never heard of Grimes Mill Winery. My friend mentioned it awhile back and was excited that we were stopping by. LOVED the tasting room!! Décor, setup and coziness. $6.00 wine tasting includes three tastings of our choice and a souvenir wine glass. The bottles start off at 12.00 on up. This is what I tried: -Tre Vini Delle Sorelle (this is limited)- My favorite red wine on the list! -Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon -Reserve Malbec He even let me try and extra one which he recommend the Merlot. My friend raved about the Edera Deliziosa (Dry whites), so I tried a sip of hers and REALLY loved it that I had to get a bottle. My palate is dry red wines, but open to trying whites. This one is a must try. They definitely serve top of the notch quality wines and excellent service! Besides the wine tasting, they have a wine club you can join. Members enjoys 2 or 3 wines, three times per year. Prices vary from $11.00- $39.00 per bottle plus shipping. Their 2 bottle wine club members get 10% off of their wine purchases and special invitations to Wine club events. Their 3 bottle wine club members get 15% off their wine release purchases and 10% off their wine purchases. The wine club membership is free! I had a great time at this winery, Dolores was really helpful and knowledgeable. The prices were incredibly reasonable as well, you could pay per sip or buy a package of sips and leave with a souvenir wine glass. I paid by the sip because I have enough junk. I tried the Pecan Wine, Edera Deliziosa, Fiore Rosso, and the Moscato. I am not sure if I should capitalize those or not but they're capitalized on the menu. We will all live. Everything tasted good to me - Kathy is the expert on wine so I will defer to her judgment. This wasn't far from the road but it comes up QUICK. I thought I was pulling into someone's driveway. I mean, it was, but it was awkward. I would go back and you should try it out. They have a great staff and a great product. read more

This is a little quaint winery just outside of Lexington. We did a wine tasting (3 wines) for $6 and they gave us the glasses to keep (sweet deal). They had a few whites and a long list of red wines. The service was great, and it was a fun and relaxed vibe. You can drink wine inside or outside, where they have a few outdoor chairs and tables. Recently my wife and I visited several Lexington area wineries on a very rainy Sunday. Our first stop was a non-starter due to some flash flooding. Our second stop was nice except for the winery hosting two private parties which made for parking issues and use of some of the facilities. Our last stop was a refreshing visit to Grimes Mill Winery. Like most of the Lexington area wineries Grimes is located in farm and horse country. The winery grounds were pleasant for what we could see given the rain. The tasting area itself has a square shaped tasting bar and is rather an intimate setting for conversation with friends or to make new friends. I think it sits about 12 people total. Our hostess was very polite and attentive. I wish I would have gotten her name for this review. We tasted about three or four wines which also included the glass as part of the cost of the taste. We tend to like the dryer variety of wines and Grimes had a nice selection. We enjoyed the atmosphere so we decided to stay for a glass of wine, enjoy the window views and conversation with some of the other tasters. Grimes Mill Winery is definitely on our "visit list" next time we are in the Lexington area. read more

We Enjoyed the wine & it was delightful. The wine bar associates were very pleasant and engaging. The animals and the atmosphere was charming. However,.. what ruined my experience was the owner tried to make an impression & I wasn't impressed. He was very rude to one of the guests due to the fact that he lets his dogs run all over the driveway even though it is a PUBLIC path to the tasting room. I felt so sorry for the young man & young lady because we came in behind them and we did not think they were in any way driving above normal in a drive way. He tried to "shame" them and it made everyone feel very uncomfortable and I thought it very unprofessional. I would recommend the wine however. A tasting consists of three pours and a glass. Are they serious?! Yes, my review is based on those three tiny pours and my opinion of the atmosphere. Usually I wait until I've tried a local place out a few times before reviewing it, but I seriously don't see myself going back. They were having some sort of Chardonnay/awakening the vines event, so I decided to try their Chardonnay as one of my tastings. It seemed a bit cloudy and wasn't that good. Then I tried a barrel aged Malbec which was a bit different, especially for a Kentucky wine. I can't think of any other Kentucky winery that even offers Malbec, so that's worth a star by itself. My last tasting was Cab reserve. It was ok, very dry. None of three I liked enough to stay and sip on a glass. Maybe it was an odd day, but the patrons were of an older crowd, like 60+. Everyone seemed stuffy. By that I mean, one lady gave me the stink eye when sat down at the bar beside of her, that wasn't a good first impression, so I was hoping to be knocked away by the wines, but as you can tell, I just wasn't. Maybe if I'd have tried more, then I maybe found one that I liked, but I guess we will never know. It's right down the road from Jean Farris Winery, so I'm glad that I was able to head over there and enjoy a glass on their patio. read more

We were visiting Lexington from out of town for a day and decided to try out a couple wineries in the area. This was the first and by far our favorite that we stopped at. How could you pass up the $6 tasting (3, maybe 4 if you're nice, small pours and you get to keep the glass!) The service was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and wine making process. They also had a wide selection to choose from. I ended up buying a bottle of the Malbec Nouveau and my friend got the last bottle of the Eldera Deliziosa, both were delicious! It's a quaint little place with a cozy and welcoming ambiance. There is also a nice outside area to enjoy as well. If I ever find myself back in the area, I will definitely be sure to stop in! Ivy (a golden doodle pup) was in the tasting room greeting each customer .. she was a cutie & very playful & friendly. They also have 3 horses grazing the property. Delicious Kentucky wines. Hands down our favorite winery. First, they are super accommodating for our children. Second, they have a lengthy list of wines that they make there on the property. The owner is very nice and very knowledgeable about wines. He will also never hesitate to tell you about what is new or what's on the horizon. The employees are all very knowledgeable about the wines as well. My husband and I are wine club members and enjoy getting the new wines for each release. When you are a wine club member the tastings are free! When we go in we always try the new stuff before buying a bottle. One of my favorite parts of this winery is that it doesn't feel stuffy and it doesn't feel commercial. It's definitely locally owned! If you've tried it before I encourage you to try it again as the wines are always changing! read more

This place has the feel of a neighborhood bar (in a good way!) in that it seems to attract "regulars" who come hang out and enjoy a glass of wine after work. I did a tasting and their tasting prices were ok, but not great. A tasting does include one of their glasses that you get to take home, but I didn't really need or want one, so it'd be nice if they'd offer a discounted tasting that didn't include the souvenir glass. Their wines that I tasted were fine, but nothing seemed particularly great or unique so I didn't buy any bottles. Also, the prices seemed high for the wines that I was tasting. Their tasting room is pretty and comfortable, and their grounds are pleasant, but not as attractive as the other wineries in the area. Today was my first trip to Grimes Mill and I'm almost certain it won't be my last. I have visited many of the other wineries around the area but few have came close to this one. I often find myself saying "this is good...for a Kentucky wine" while drinking others that just seem to lack something, be it acidity or balance. This wasn't the case at all here. I tried four very different wines and each one I loved in a different way. They were approachable and I found myself wanting to tell my non-wine drinker friends about it because there's no way they wouldn't enjoy at least one of these. We wanted to check out the winery near us, and were happily surprised. Wine was very good and the tasting room is cozy.

There were mouse turds in our cracker bowl. We showed the man who was pouring our wine who quickly dumped them into the garbage without saying anything then began to tell us about events at the winery instead of addressing the issue. We were out of there as quickly as we could pay our tab. I cannot believe someone would be okay with serving customers in this manner. Completely disgusted and now worried about my health as mice carry diseases and I was eating the crackers out of the bowl!!!!! read more

My husband and I stopped by for a quick diversion on our road trip home. We were impressed with the quality of the wines from this family. The pourer was knowledgable and answered our questions. The owners were also available and provided some additional insider info about winemaking. We were surprised by the difference between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and the pourer explained the reasons for the difference in how the reserve was aged in French oak at the owners residence and the other in KY oak barrels. I really didn't believe there would be that much of a difference until I tasted them. We bought a bottle of each as well as the Pinot Grigio and Malbec. read more

I stopped by on a Saturday with my sister and mom. We were going to different wineries and came here because it was close to a few others. Little did I know that this was really the winery to be at. Not only were their red wines excellent, but the service was INCREDIBLE. They all clearly loved the winery and took a lot of pride in it. The owner was even there and took us on an impromptu tour! It was a great experience. We also got to pet the horses and dogs are welcome which is great. We were told about this new winery by the pourers over at Equus Run and decided it was worth our time if they liked it! The tasting room is very welcoming, as was our pourer that afternoon. They had fewer wines on their menu than some of the other places but this made it easier to pick what you wanted to taste. I found a dry KY wine that I liked and I was sad that it was the only dry red on their menu (only to find out later they had sold out of two other dry reds). As we were tasting and asking questions we found out one of the owners was standing by us at the bar, and when she (or the pourer) didn't know the answer to some of our questions the winemaker showed up form the back to answer them! The owners are very friendly and will gladly take you on a tour of this small winery. This would be a great place to bring a picnic (they have tables set up outside) and enjoy some delicious wine. read more
