What a lovely Glasgow gem. Having had the best salted caramel brownie at the Good Food Show from…read morehere I decided it was time to pay the sisters in Killearn a visit. A lovely 30 minute drive from my flat brought me here, through a lot of twisty-roads and beautiful country. On arrival, we got given the ugly duckling table of the place, ie not by the window. But after a group left managed to secure ourselves a few of the rolling hills and torrential rain. The menu is great, with a huge variety and GF/veggie options. I had the seafood platter which was huge, as in I struggled to finish it. (Obviously did). No half-portions here, 5 or 6 prawns, a huge helping of salmon, same with the mackerel pate and some incredible oatcakes with salad and dressing. The Dear Green coffee was bitter and black and just how I like it. My heart did want the Salted Caramel Cake with popcorn but it looked slightly too sickly. I opted for a classic brownie and was not disappointed. My friend's meringue with fruit compote and cream was mammoth! Well worth a drive, you can pre-book tables which I would definitely advise. Thanks to Imogen, our waitress who was just lovely despite how busy it was. Can't wait to try the Port Glasgow branch
Having been to their Quarriers Village location and thoroughly enjoyed it, I was quite happy to get…read morethe opportunity to sample the sisters' newest cafe on a cold, but sunny afternoon. This location is a little easier to get to as it's situated in Killearn town hall. Arriving at just before 2, the immediately obvious difference between the 2 locations was that this is much busier than Quarriers. The place was mainly occupied by the lunching ladies of sub-suburbia, save for the odd lunching worker/working luncher. Due to the lunchtime rush the staff seemed to be a wee bit stretched, (the poor folk next to me had to ask for a latte a couple of times before the server came back to say she'd forgotten what they'd asked for), but thankfully I had no problems with the service. I had the tasting platter at the Quarriers location, so of course I ordered it again (after all it was tasty!). When it came out it looked the same, but somehow it was lacking some of its previous magic. Of course I couldn't leave without trying one of their amazing looking cakes from the counter, I went with the flourless tangerine cake (yes it is GF), which was fragrant and not too dry, it had a texture not totally dissimilar to polenta cake. Now it maybe second season syndrome or it could just be a matter of over familiarity, but there does seem to be something missing from Quarriers in this location. I don't know whether it was down to the time of day (I visited Quarriers towards the quieter end of lunch), the fact that this is a somewhat new cafe or down to the glass & white wall environs, as I said it just wasn't the same.. Don't let that put you off trying the place out though, it's still a good cafe, serving good food & the view out across the hills is really beautiful (especially with all the snow). If I taste not time were the issue I'd choose Quarriers Village over Killearn, but otherwise you'll probably choose Killearn for its convenience & almost as good food.
A few things on offer today.

There isn't a large seating area (only a few tables) but I just popped in to get a few treats to take home. After I had taken plenty of photos (it just had to be done) I finally settled on a peanut butter & white chocolate brownie pretty sure it was a brownie) and a slice of Persian Tea loaf. My excitement levels went through the roof because anyone who knows me knows how much I love tea (I have over 200 different blends). My cakes were boxed up in a brown box and sealed with a Honeybee Bakery sticker. Service with a smile and tea loaf...I left in a rather good mood indeed! The tea loaf was £2.25 a slice and I found it to be really good value for money considering the portion I got. It was moist (even though I hate that word) and melt in the mouth stuff. Definitely going back for more sometime soon because it was that tasty. Highly recommended. My peanut butter and white chocolate cake was nice, but I'm not sure the combination was for me. Although I did finish it, it's not something I would purchase again but that's purely down to my personal taste. Staff were lovely and all of the cakes looked so fresh and inviting. They also sell some amazing looking meringues which I'm going to have to try soon! Highly recommended!

They were very busy and their display case was filled with lots of delicious looking premium pastries, cookies, little pies, breads and so much more. The staff was super friendly and made our visit even more enjoyable. We purchased a few bars, cookies, hand pies and some scones. The prices were very reasonable. Every item was super fresh and extremely tasty. The cream filling in the pies was super creamy and rich. The filled cookies were amazing and I wished that I had more. The bars were irresistible and loaded with fresh fruits.

This is essential preventive maintenance to avoid being sucked in by the goodies on display in the window. Today I forgot the protective ritual, and before I knew it I was standing in the queue behind a lady with a pram, salivating like a dog over all the yummy stuff on display (metaphorically speaking of course - what kind of a slob do you think I am?) Veggie sausage rolls, slices of pizza, flapjacks, tarts, gluten-free cakes, flower-pot bread... (wait, what was that last one again?) - for such a small place they produce a fabulous range of tasty treats to tickle your taste buds. There's no coffee and no seating, but they are, after all a BAKERY, people! Not a coffee house. If you want somewhere to sit, cross the road and sit in Mansfield Park, or on one of the outdoor exercise machines as I saw a lady doing as she scoffed her cake - perhaps the mere presence of the machine was counterbalancing the calorific consumption in her head? Great bakery, and a fantastic addition to the Hyndland Street bohemiana.

I come in here just about every time I am strolling through the neighborhood. The bakers are very friendly! Be aware of the limited hours if you are checking-out MHB for the first time. My favourite savory treats are the tomato basil slice and you can't go wrong with any of the rolls. I even like the vegetarian lentil roll, and I'm as carnivorous as people get! I'm sure many of the other items are good too; I just haven't tried them because I get hung up on the delicious things I have already eaten! Onto the important stuff: CAKES and PASTRIES! I love their chocolate volcanoes! I have a new found love for My Home Bakery's lemon-cranberry cake. You also can't go wrong with the almond-crusted strawberry bakewell. My favorite fruity item is the raspberry crumble dowsed in powdered sugar. And if you can't decide, you may need to order a 'party box' to figure it out (see photos). If I am there in the morning the cinnamon brioches are hard to pass up! I got my friend Jeevan hooked on them too! Long story short, there is a reason why the front door says, "diets end here!"

We grabbed a few for a lunch later in the day along with a pair of pastries, and some coffee. We ate the pastries in their tearoom and the sandwiches a few hours later on the road. Both were a-maz-ing. The sandwiches were made fresh, stayed great until we got to the later in the day, and were portioned well. I kind of want to go back to get another few sandwiches, but sadly I've left Scotland and am back in the states (and my routine work-life). If you are in the area or plan to be, plan to work in a stop. Enjoy!

It was about 9 am and already quite busy, it seemed like everybody who was on the way to Isle of Skye or Glencoe was stopping here. They are known for good sandwiches so we got 2 different ones to try. Both sandwiches came with a purple color coleslaw that was good but we found all the coleslaw in Scotland had too much mayo for our preference. Pastrami with Swiss sandwich: Proper pastrami that is a nice pink with black crust from the nitrates and smoking process. Plenty of cheese and meat but it was very large, had to save half for later or I wouldn't have been able to drive. Turkey sandwich: with pickles and white cheddar, they had some kind of mayo spread that was good. This was surprisingly tasty and we ended up eating more than the kids. If you go down the alley on the side you can eat at a little lake in the back. There's a hill with Worden steps you can climb and from the top you can see a small, old cemetery. They had a wide assortment of country loaves for sale as well!

The staff who work in Anderson's are actual bakers who make all the delights they have on offer in the bakery that morning rather than the mass produced, heated up rubbish they often sell in Aulds. I am not a big savory pastry fan but the sausage rolls are so yummy and when I lived in the area I loved popping in for one to munch on while I waited on the bus into university. You have to be really quick though because after around 1/1:30 in the afternoon most of the goodies will be gone! I have to give a special mention to Anderson's utterly divine chocolate cake with chocolate cream filling and chocolate icing. If I had to choose between a night in bed with Brad Pitt circa Meet Joe Black and one of these cakes it would be the cake every time. Sorry Brad! Even though I am now in my 20s my mum still orders me one of these cakes for my birthday every year. How good are mums?
